Did you know? The subject record at the end of secondary school describes what a student actually sat for. That is a different job from the Posting Group used when the student entered secondary school. Keeping those two moments separate makes the pathway easier to understand.

Checked 25 October 2026. Examples are illustrative; use official information for the applicable cohort and current school instructions for individual arrangements.

SECTION 1 OF 5

Read admission, learning and certification as separate stages

PG2 means Posting Group 2, used for secondary-school posting. G1, G2 and G3 describe subject levels. The Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate, or SEC, is the examination qualification introduced from the 2027 graduating cohort.

SEAB explains that students sit subjects at their respective levels and receive an SEC reflecting the subjects and levels they sat for. A student’s original Posting Group is therefore not a substitute for reading the actual subject record.

This guide explains the distinction. It does not determine an individual student’s examination entry or post-secondary eligibility. Those questions require the current school and official admission information.

SECTION 2 OF 5

Keep a current subject record

Make a simple list of confirmed subjects and levels using the latest school information. If a subject arrangement changes, record the effective date and keep the confirmation. The list helps the student identify the right resources and questions.

For examination matters, use the school’s actual checking and registration procedures. SEAB states that school candidates register through their schools. Follow the school’s instructions for checking details and reporting a possible discrepancy.

A family study planner is useful preparation, but it is not an official examination registration record. Keep those purposes clearly labelled.

SECTION 3 OF 5

A worked example of reading the difference

Imagine a student entered through PG2 and later has a confirmed mixture of G2 and G3 subjects. When planning revision, the family checks each subject and level separately. They do not select every paper from a folder labelled G2 simply because of the entry Posting Group.

When checking examination information supplied by the school, they compare each entry with the confirmed arrangements and raise any mismatch through the school’s stated channel.

This example does not predict a particular subject combination. It shows why the current record matters: admission information and examination entries answer different questions at different points in the journey.

SECTION 4 OF 5

Connect the record to the question you need answered

For revision, ask which syllabus, components and materials match the subject entry. For a future course, ask which qualification, subject levels and grades the relevant admission route requires.

A course’s requirements need to be read for the applicable intake and exercise. The presence of a subject on a record does not by itself establish that every requirement for a course is met.

If the family wants help understanding the connection, bring the subject list and the exact official course requirements to the teacher or Education and Career Guidance counsellor. That makes the discussion specific.

SECTION 5 OF 5

Quick answers about the SEC

Does PG2 mean the student receives a separate PG2 certificate? SEAB describes the SEC in terms of subjects and the levels sat for. Read the qualification through that framework.

Should families use another student’s examination list? Use the child’s own confirmed arrangements and school instructions. An example is not an individual entry record.

What can we do today? Label the three stages on one page: Posting Group at entry, current subjects and levels, and examination information for the relevant cohort. Clarify the stage whenever a new document arrives.
