Inventors can describe the same technical idea with different words and languages. The International Patent Classification gives patent offices and searchers a shared subject hierarchy, making technical discovery less dependent on one phrase.

The hierarchy moves from section to class, subclass, main group and subgroup. A complete symbol is meaningful only with its place in that structure, because subgroup titles can inherit words and limits from their parents.

Did you know? The official IPC publication includes more than scheme titles. Searchers can consult definitions, notes, references, catchwords, revision concordance information and previous versions to understand how a technical place should be read.

This guide uses classification as a search language. An IPC symbol describes subject matter; it does not certify novelty, grant, quality, safety or current patent rights.

CHAPTER 1 OF 17 · Read the hierarchy

1. The IPC organises technical subject matter

Back to contents

Patent classification groups technologies by subject rather than by the words an inventor happened to choose. The International Patent Classification provides a common hierarchy for classifying patent documents according to technology. It supports retrieval across varying terminology. This lets students search across synonyms and languages.

Try this

Evidence question: Which technical concept does the symbol represent? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Open the symbol in the official IPC publication. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Keep the identifier, retrieval date and source page in the note so the route can be repeated.

2. Sections are the broadest level

Back to contents

The International Patent Classification is a hierarchy whose symbols point to sections, classes, subclasses and groups. IPC symbols begin within broad sections identified by letters, before narrowing through classes, subclasses and groups. It also keeps a classification symbol from being treated as a verdict on novelty.

Try this

Evidence question: Which section frames this technology? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Trace the full path instead of quoting only the letter. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. If a field is missing, write “not shown” and follow the official documentation rather than inventing a value.

3. Classes and subclasses narrow the field

Back to contents

Versions matter because the scheme is revised as technology and search practice change. A class combines a section letter and digits, while a subclass adds a letter and a defined subject scope. A reproducible search records the symbol, version and depth used.

Try this

Evidence question: Which scope note controls the subclass? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Read the subclass title and notes. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Before comparing two records, check that their object types, methods, versions and units really align.

4. Main groups establish central categories

Back to contents

Definitions, references and catchwords guide discovery without replacing the scheme itself. Within a subclass, main groups use a number followed by /00 and provide broad group headings. The best result combines classification with text and document reading.

Try this

Evidence question: Which main group contains the relevant subgroup? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Record the hierarchy above the chosen leaf. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Finish by naming one supported statement and one stronger statement that still needs another evidence layer.

5. Subgroups add technical detail

Back to contents

Patent classification groups technologies by subject rather than by the words an inventor happened to choose. Subgroups extend a main group below the slash and are displayed with indentation that reflects hierarchical relationships. This lets students search across synonyms and languages.

Try this

Evidence question: At what depth does the useful concept appear? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Preserve the complete symbol and indentation path. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Keep the identifier, retrieval date and source page in the note so the route can be repeated.

6. Titles need their hierarchical context

Back to contents

The International Patent Classification is a hierarchy whose symbols point to sections, classes, subclasses and groups. A subgroup title can depend on the wording of its parent groups. Reading it alone may change or obscure the intended scope. It also keeps a classification symbol from being treated as a verdict on novelty.

Try this

Evidence question: Which parent words complete the meaning? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Combine parent and child titles in the note. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. If a field is missing, write “not shown” and follow the official documentation rather than inventing a value.

7. Notes can modify classification scope

Back to contents

Versions matter because the scheme is revised as technology and search practice change. Notes may define terms, priorities or special rules for a section, class, subclass or group. A reproducible search records the symbol, version and depth used.

Try this

Evidence question: Which note applies to this place? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Copy the note reference before using the symbol. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Before comparing two records, check that their object types, methods, versions and units really align.

8. References direct and limit search

Back to contents

Definitions, references and catchwords guide discovery without replacing the scheme itself. Limiting references, informative references and other cross-references guide where related subject matter is classified or searched. The best result combines classification with text and document reading.

Try this

Evidence question: Does the reference exclude, redirect or merely inform? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Follow the referenced symbol and label the relationship. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Finish by naming one supported statement and one stronger statement that still needs another evidence layer.

9. Definitions add explanation

Back to contents

Patent classification groups technologies by subject rather than by the words an inventor happened to choose. IPC definitions can explain terminology, boundaries, special rules and relationships among places. Not every symbol has the same amount of supplementary material. This lets students search across synonyms and languages.

Try this

Evidence question: Which definition resolves the ambiguity? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Cite the definition page with the symbol. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Keep the identifier, retrieval date and source page in the note so the route can be repeated.

10. Catchwords are discovery aids

Back to contents

The International Patent Classification is a hierarchy whose symbols point to sections, classes, subclasses and groups. The Catchword Index maps familiar words and phrases toward possible IPC places. A catchword is an entry route, not the official classification decision. It also keeps a classification symbol from being treated as a verdict on novelty.

Try this

Evidence question: Which scheme place does the catchword suggest? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Verify the suggestion in the scheme and definitions. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. If a field is missing, write “not shown” and follow the official documentation rather than inventing a value.

11. Term search spans selected content

Back to contents

Versions matter because the scheme is revised as technology and search practice change. IPCPUB can search terms in scheme titles, references, catchwords and definitions, with controls for path and stemming. A reproducible search records the symbol, version and depth used.

Try this

Evidence question: Which sources and options were searched? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Save the term, scope and selected version. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Before comparing two records, check that their object types, methods, versions and units really align.

12. Symbols do not prove novelty

Back to contents

Definitions, references and catchwords guide discovery without replacing the scheme itself. An IPC symbol describes technical subject matter. It does not state that claims are new, inventive, granted or in force. The best result combines classification with text and document reading.

Try this

Evidence question: Which legal conclusion would overreach? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Replace it with a precise classification statement. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Finish by naming one supported statement and one stronger statement that still needs another evidence layer.

13. Versions preserve historical meaning

Back to contents

Patent classification groups technologies by subject rather than by the words an inventor happened to choose. The IPC is revised and the official publication provides current and previous versions. A symbol or wording can move, split or change over time. This lets students search across synonyms and languages.

Try this

Evidence question: Which version applied to the document or search? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Record the version date with the symbol. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Keep the identifier, retrieval date and source page in the note so the route can be repeated.

14. Revision concordance tracks movement

Back to contents

The International Patent Classification is a hierarchy whose symbols point to sections, classes, subclasses and groups. Revision tools help users see how subject matter moved between old and new places. Search strategies may need both historical and current symbols. It also keeps a classification symbol from being treated as a verdict on novelty.

Try this

Evidence question: What changed between the versions? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Use the concordance before comparing long time periods. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. If a field is missing, write “not shown” and follow the official documentation rather than inventing a value.

15. Core and advanced levels have history

Back to contents

Versions matter because the scheme is revised as technology and search practice change. IPC publication history includes changes in how classification levels and revision cycles were managed. Older documents need the scheme context of their time. A reproducible search records the symbol, version and depth used.

Try this

Evidence question: Is this an historical or current classification? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Avoid projecting a current label backwards without checking. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Before comparing two records, check that their object types, methods, versions and units really align.

16. Classification and keywords complement each other

Back to contents

Definitions, references and catchwords guide discovery without replacing the scheme itself. Classification can find documents with different words, while text can catch emerging phrasing or fine distinctions not captured by one symbol. The best result combines classification with text and document reading.

Try this

Evidence question: What did each search route retrieve? Answer in three parts: identify the visible field or file, explain how it bears on the question, and state the boundary of that evidence. Preserve the database’s own object names and accession rather than flattening everything into the word ‘data’.

Try this: Combine a symbol with synonyms and compare overlap. Turn the result into a compact claim-evidence-reasoning note, then ask a partner to retrace it. Finish by naming one supported statement and one stronger statement that still needs another evidence layer.

A classification symbol is a route through technical meaning, not a shortcut around reading

The IPC helps learners search across terminology by connecting inventions to a maintained technical hierarchy. Its notes, definitions and versions keep the symbols interpretable.

Save the full symbol, hierarchy path, scheme version, notes, references, catchword route, query terms and access date. Then inspect the retrieved patent documents and their exact technical disclosures.

Sources and next reading

Substantive resource claims in this article were checked against the primary pages below. A structured record is a route into evidence; it does not by itself prove a scientific conclusion. Recheck the live record, evidence labels and release context before using it in assessed work or research.

For a classroom enquiry, save a short research receipt containing the question, search terms, selected object, exact identifier, version, access date and the evidence boundary you observed. Add the file or page that supports each statement. This small routine turns browsing into accountable science learning and gives a teacher, classmate or future analyst a route they can independently follow.

Before sharing the conclusion, ask another reader to retrace the route without verbal hints. If they reach a different version, file or interpretation, improve the receipt and narrow the claim. Reproducibility begins with this practical check. It teaches careful reading, supports fair collaboration and keeps uncertainty visible while evidence moves from an online service into notes, analysis and a final explanation.

A useful final review separates five questions. What object was found? Which organisation or repository maintains it? What exact evidence was inspected? Which statement does that evidence support? What remains uncertain? Answer each question in one sentence, then connect every answer to a visible field, file or source page. This review catches common mistakes: citing a collection when a file supplied the value, treating the newest release as the analysed release, confusing permission with scientific suitability, or turning a discovery count into a conclusion. It also gives students a calm way to improve work. A missing detail becomes a next research step instead of an invitation to guess. When the route is complete, the final explanation can stay simple because the identifiers, dates, versions, limitations and supporting evidence are already organised underneath it.
