Why English? | Reading an IRAS GIRO Instalment Plan Before the First Deduction

Three students discuss open schoolbooks and handwritten notes during a group study session.

An IRAS GIRO instalment plan is more than permission for money to leave a bank account. English matters because apply, approve, activate, provisional, revise, deduct, fail, retry, cancel and pay in full describe different stages of the tax-payment process.

People searching IRAS GIRO plan, income tax instalment payment, GIRO deduction date or failed IRAS GIRO should begin with myTax Portal and the current IRAS payment page for their tax type. Old screenshots can show different banks, dates, years or arrangements.

IRAS’s current individual income-tax guidance, checked on 26 October 2026, says deductions are generally made on the 6th of each month, or the next working day, with a second deduction on the 20th after a failure. It also explains that a Provisional Instalment Plan may run from May and later be revised when the actual assessment is finalised.

Clear English helps a taxpayer confirm that the right tax account and bank are connected, budget for the actual schedule, recognise a legitimate revision, respond quickly to a failed deduction and reconcile the bank debit with the remaining tax balance.

Official sources and the date boundary

The factual floor comes from IRAS’s current GIRO, late-payment, payment-plan and Tax Season guidance. The taxpayer’s live myTax Portal plan and Notice of Assessment control the individual amounts, dates and status.

These official pages were checked on 26 October 2026. Live interfaces, lists, contact details and procedures can change. Reopen the official source before acting, and keep the publication or update date visible.

Did You Know? A monthly IRAS amount can change after the current tax assessment is finalised. The Provisional Instalment Plan is based on earlier or estimated tax, so a later revision can redistribute the remaining payable amount across the remaining instalments.

1. Enter through myTax Portal

Use IRAS’s known official site and secure login flow to view the current plan, not a link inside an unexpected message.

An eGIRO application, an approved bank arrangement, a visible instalment plan and a successful monthly deduction are four different states. Each needs its own evidence.

IRAS-GIRO scene: A text message says a GIRO deduction failed and asks for bank login details.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: open iras.gov.sg independently; use myTax Portal; protect Singpass and bank credentials; locate View GIRO Plan. Keep the controlling letter, portal record, statement, contract, bill or acknowledgement beside the plain-English note. A confident summary can still detach a date from its condition, merge two parties, or turn a pending state into a completed one.

Read from the positions of the taxpayer, the bank account holder and IRAS. All three must refer to the same tax account and authorised arrangement, while only IRAS’s current portal shows the tax-plan state.

Boundary: IRAS and banks do not need a caller to know your password or one-time code. Authentication supports safe digital life. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • open iras.gov.sg independently
  • use myTax Portal
  • protect Singpass and bank credentials
  • locate View GIRO Plan

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

2. Match the taxpayer and tax account

Confirm whether the plan belongs to individual income tax, property tax or another account and match the taxpayer reference.

IRAS explains that an individual income-tax monthly GIRO plan normally deducts on the 6th, with a retry on the 20th after a failure, subject to working-day adjustments. The live plan still controls the taxpayer’s exact dates and amounts.

IRAS-GIRO scene: A bank account holder pays tax for a family member but later reads the refund rule as if the tax account were their own.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: name taxpayer; name tax type; record reference; label account holder. Keep the controlling letter, portal record, statement, contract, bill or acknowledgement beside the plain-English note. A confident summary can still detach a date from its condition, merge two parties, or turn a pending state into a completed one.

Use two ledgers: the IRAS plan showing what should be collected and the bank statement showing what was actually debited. Reconciliation happens only when the corresponding tax balance also updates.

Boundary: A payment source and a taxpayer are not automatically the same person. Role matching supports applications. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • name taxpayer
  • name tax type
  • record reference
  • label account holder

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

3. Distinguish applied, approved and active

Find the explicit application status, bank approval and visible plan before assuming GIRO will collect the amount due.

A Provisional Instalment Plan can begin from May using prior-year or estimated tax, then be revised after the current assessment is finalised. A changed monthly amount can therefore be part of the plan rather than an unexplained duplicate charge.

IRAS-GIRO scene: The taxpayer submits eGIRO one day before the tax due date and assumes late-payment protection is automatic.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: save application acknowledgement; check approval; view the plan; compare tax due date. Keep the controlling letter, portal record, statement, contract, bill or acknowledgement beside the plain-English note. A confident summary can still detach a date from its condition, merge two parties, or turn a pending state into a completed one.

Treat application, approval, activation, scheduled, attempted, failed, retried, deducted and posted as a sequence. Skipping a state can turn a payment assumption into a penalty risk.

Boundary: IRAS says the arrangement must be approved before the payment due date to avoid late-payment penalties. Workflow states support admissions and licences. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • save application acknowledgement
  • check approval
  • view the plan
  • compare tax due date

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

4. Identify the plan type

Read whether the arrangement is monthly, one-time yearly, provisional, revised or an extended plan.

An eGIRO application, an approved bank arrangement, a visible instalment plan and a successful monthly deduction are four different states. Each needs its own evidence.

IRAS-GIRO scene: A one-time yearly deduction is budgeted as twelve small debits.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: copy plan label; count instalments; mark start and end; name any special approval.

Boundary: Different tax types and plans can use different schedules. Classification supports mathematics. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • copy plan label
  • count instalments
  • mark start and end
  • name any special approval

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

5. Build the deduction calendar

Copy each scheduled month, amount and deduction date, including the working-day rule.

IRAS explains that an individual income-tax monthly GIRO plan normally deducts on the 6th, with a retry on the 20th after a failure, subject to working-day adjustments. The live plan still controls the taxpayer’s exact dates and amounts.

IRAS-GIRO scene: The 6th falls on a Sunday and the taxpayer treats Monday’s debit as unauthorised.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: mark scheduled date; check weekend or holiday; reserve funds early; set a reminder.

Boundary: A personal reminder does not change the authorised deduction date. Calendar literacy supports examinations and work. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • mark scheduled date
  • check weekend or holiday
  • reserve funds early
  • set a reminder

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

6. Understand the provisional basis

Read whether the instalment amount is based on the previous year’s tax or current estimated tax before final assessment.

A Provisional Instalment Plan can begin from May using prior-year or estimated tax, then be revised after the current assessment is finalised. A changed monthly amount can therefore be part of the plan rather than an unexplained duplicate charge.

IRAS-GIRO scene: A provisional amount is described as the final tax liability.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: name the basis; mark May start; separate estimate from assessment; expect later reconciliation.

Boundary: A provisional plan is payment scheduling evidence, not the final assessment itself. Evidence labels support science. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • name the basis
  • mark May start
  • separate estimate from assessment
  • expect later reconciliation

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

7. Read a revised plan as a replacement

When assessment is finalised, compare tax paid, remaining tax, remaining months and the new instalment amount.

An eGIRO application, an approved bank arrangement, a visible instalment plan and a successful monthly deduction are four different states. Each needs its own evidence.

IRAS-GIRO scene: Both the old and revised monthly amounts are added to the household budget as though two plans run together.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: record tax paid; record remaining tax; identify new start month; retire old schedule.

Boundary: IRAS says an edited or revised arrangement replaces the existing plan. Version control supports project management. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • record tax paid
  • record remaining tax
  • identify new start month
  • retire old schedule

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

8. Keep sufficient funds and a suitable limit

Check the bank balance and any GIRO payment limit before the scheduled date.

IRAS explains that an individual income-tax monthly GIRO plan normally deducts on the 6th, with a retry on the 20th after a failure, subject to working-day adjustments. The live plan still controls the taxpayer’s exact dates and amounts.

IRAS-GIRO scene: The account has money, but a low bank limit still causes the deduction to fail.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: check amount; check available balance; check payment limit; avoid last-minute transfers.

Boundary: A visible balance does not guarantee that all funds are available or the limit is adequate. Operational reading supports banking. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • check amount
  • check available balance
  • check payment limit
  • avoid last-minute transfers

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

9. Recognise the first failed deduction

Look for bank and IRAS evidence before deciding that a missing or reversed debit has succeeded.

A Provisional Instalment Plan can begin from May using prior-year or estimated tax, then be revised after the current assessment is finalised. A changed monthly amount can therefore be part of the plan rather than an unexplained duplicate charge.

IRAS-GIRO scene: A pending bank entry disappears and is remembered as a completed tax payment.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: check posted debit; check portal status; record failure reason if known; prepare for retry.

Boundary: Pending, reversed, rejected and posted are different transaction states. Transaction states support computing. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • check posted debit
  • check portal status
  • record failure reason if known
  • prepare for retry

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

10. Prepare for the retry date

For individual income tax, use IRAS’s current retry rule and maintain funds through the applicable working day.

An eGIRO application, an approved bank arrangement, a visible instalment plan and a successful monthly deduction are four different states. Each needs its own evidence.

IRAS-GIRO scene: After a failed 6th deduction, the taxpayer removes funds before the 20th because no new application was submitted.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: confirm current retry rule; mark 20th; check working day; leave sufficient funds.

Boundary: Other tax types may use different dates; the live IRAS page controls. Conditional reasoning supports policy reading. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • confirm current retry rule
  • mark 20th
  • check working day
  • leave sufficient funds

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

11. Understand cancellation after repeated failures

Read the current rule for cancellation and identify when the outstanding balance becomes due.

IRAS explains that an individual income-tax monthly GIRO plan normally deducts on the 6th, with a retry on the 20th after a failure, subject to working-day adjustments. The live plan still controls the taxpayer’s exact dates and amounts.

IRAS-GIRO scene: Four failed attempts are treated as four future chances rather than two months of failure.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: count attempts; group by month; check cancellation state; read outstanding amount.

Boundary: Do not wait for another debit after the portal shows the arrangement cancelled. Counting with states supports mathematics. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • count attempts
  • group by month
  • check cancellation state
  • read outstanding amount

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

12. Know the full-payment and reactivation routes

If the arrangement is cancelled, read whether to pay outstanding tax or reactivate through the authorised service before the stated due date.

A Provisional Instalment Plan can begin from May using prior-year or estimated tax, then be revised after the current assessment is finalised. A changed monthly amount can therefore be part of the plan rather than an unexplained duplicate charge.

IRAS-GIRO scene: A taxpayer creates a new bank transfer to details found in an old email.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: open Pay Taxes if required; open Apply/Manage GIRO Plan; check deadline; save acknowledgement.

Boundary: This article cannot extend the due date or approve a payment plan. Authorised routes support cybersecurity. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • open Pay Taxes if required
  • open Apply/Manage GIRO Plan
  • check deadline
  • save acknowledgement

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

13. Ask for help before the due date

If payment is genuinely difficult, use IRAS’s current payment-plan service and provide requested evidence honestly.

An eGIRO application, an approved bank arrangement, a visible instalment plan and a successful monthly deduction are four different states. Each needs its own evidence.

IRAS-GIRO scene: The taxpayer ignores reminders until recovery action begins, then asks for the ordinary monthly schedule.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: read eligibility guidance; apply through portal; prepare evidence; record the outcome.

Boundary: An application for a longer plan is not approval. Early help-seeking supports education and work. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • read eligibility guidance
  • apply through portal
  • prepare evidence
  • record the outcome

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

14. Reconcile every deduction

Match bank debit, IRAS posting, plan instalment and remaining balance instead of relying on one notification.

IRAS explains that an individual income-tax monthly GIRO plan normally deducts on the 6th, with a retry on the 20th after a failure, subject to working-day adjustments. The live plan still controls the taxpayer’s exact dates and amounts.

IRAS-GIRO scene: The bank shows a debit, but the taxpayer never checks whether it posted to the intended tax account.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: match amount; match date; match tax reference; check updated balance.

Boundary: A bank debit alone may not explain allocation or remaining liability. Reconciliation supports accounting. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • match amount
  • match date
  • match tax reference
  • check updated balance

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

15. Keep the plan, assessment and proof together

Archive the Notice of Assessment, plan, revisions, bank debits, portal acknowledgements and any IRAS correspondence.

A Provisional Instalment Plan can begin from May using prior-year or estimated tax, then be revised after the current assessment is finalised. A changed monthly amount can therefore be part of the plan rather than an unexplained duplicate charge.

IRAS-GIRO scene: A later query cannot be reconstructed because only a calendar reminder remains.

The practical method is to build a GIRO control sheet with fields for taxpayer, tax reference, tax type, Year of Assessment or property, bank account suffix, application status, approval date, plan type, start month, end month, deduction date, monthly amount, provisional basis, revised amount, failed deduction, retry date, outstanding tax and portal verification. Work in sequence: save each version; label effective months; retain receipts; protect tax data.

Boundary: Do not use an obsolete plan after a later plan replaces it. Audit trails support adult life. This guide is for careful reading and payment tracking. It does not calculate a taxpayer’s liability, guarantee an instalment request, waive penalties or replace current instructions in myTax Portal or from IRAS.

A four-line working note

  • save each version
  • label effective months
  • retain receipts
  • protect tax data

Write one sentence that preserves the source, object, finding and next action. Then ask what the document does not establish. That second sentence is often where mature comprehension appears.

Advice for students, parents and mentors

For taxpayers

View the live plan before the first deduction.

Keep funds and limits ready before, not on, the scheduled day.

For family helpers

Help with calendars and reconciliation without asking for passwords.

Keep the taxpayer and bank-account-holder roles separate.

For students

Notice how tax administration combines English, arithmetic and state tracking.

Practise reading provisional values without calling them final.

The goal is not to make a young person afraid of every official page. It is to make careful checking feel normal, achievable and quietly empowering. English becomes useful when it helps someone pause, verify, ask a precise question and choose a proportionate next step.

Frequently asked questions

When is individual income-tax GIRO normally deducted?

IRAS currently states the 6th of each month, or the next working day if needed.

What happens after a failed deduction?

IRAS currently states a second deduction on the 20th for individual income tax, subject to the working-day rule.

Can the plan be cancelled after failures?

IRAS states cancellation follows two consecutive months of failed deductions, described as four failed attempts in a row.

What is a Provisional Instalment Plan?

IRAS describes it as a plan beginning from May based on prior-year or estimated tax before final assessment.

Why did my monthly amount change?

The current assessment can revise the remaining tax and instalments. Compare the updated plan with tax paid.

Does applying for GIRO mean it is active?

No. Check bank approval and the visible plan in myTax Portal.

Can I change the bank or duration?

IRAS provides Apply/Manage and View GIRO Plan services; follow the current instructions for your plan and tax type.

What if I cannot afford the schedule?

Approach IRAS before the due date and apply through the authorised payment-plan service if appropriate.

What should I keep?

The assessment, plan, revisions, bank evidence and portal acknowledgements.

Why English?

Because provisional, revised, deducted, failed, retried and cancelled create different payment states.
