Full chapter index · Science Learning Hub

A stability programme can contain many combinations: several strengths, package sizes, batches, orientations, test attributes and time points. Testing every sample at every time can require thousands of measurements.

FDA’s final January 2003 ICH Q1D guidance describes bracketing and matrixing designs that can reduce testing in suitable stability programmes conducted under the principles of Q1A(R2). The reduction depends on scientific assumptions that must be stated and supported.

Did you know? Bracketing reduces which product configurations are tested, while matrixing reduces which samples are tested at particular time points. They are related efficiency tools, but they answer different design problems.

For students, Q1D is a lesson in experimental design. Smart sampling can save material and laboratory capacity, yet the design remains trustworthy only when every untested combination is represented by defensible evidence.
