How to Perform in PSLE | Learner’s Guide Vol 0960 | English, Mathematics and Science: Preserve Exact Information Until the Final Required Form

PSLE Learner’s Guide · Volume 0960

Find your next learning step

Do not simplify away decisive information too early: preserve exact values, wording, units and observations through the reasoning, then convert only to the final required form.

Series routes: Use the complete PSLE Learner’s Guide volume directory, the original PSLE Learning Guide and the English learning hub, Mathematics learning hub, Science learning hub.

This guide uses original Primary 6 practice and does not predict a live question. Consult the SEAB PSLE formats examined in 2026 page for official information.

1. Separate source from presentation

Working information should remain faithful to the source. The final answer may require rounding, a concise sentence or a category label, but presentation comes after reasoning.

Build the explanation by naming the exact source number wording unit diagram label or observation and the transformations performed during working. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

Repair the nearest misconception by checking the final precision format paraphrase or classification requested and returning to premature rounding meaning drift unit loss copied error evidence strength and independent checking. State why the tempting alternative is too strong, incomplete or about a different stage.

  • Check the exact source number wording unit diagram label or observation.
  • Check the transformations performed during working.
  • Check the final precision format paraphrase or classification requested.

2. Delay numerical rounding

Rounding intermediate values can compound error. Keep fractions or sufficient calculator digits, then round once to the required place and state the unit.

3. Preserve textual meaning

A comprehension paraphrase may change wording but must retain who did what, when, why and with what certainty. Do not replace may with will or some with all.

4. Preserve scientific observations

Record what was actually seen or measured before interpreting it. Cloudy water, a lower reading and no visible change are observations with limits, not automatic causes.

5. Carry units and labels

A bare number can be exact yet answer the wrong quantity. Keep centimetres, square centimetres, seconds, axes and object labels throughout calculations.

6. Use exact forms as checks

Fractions, unsimplified relationships and quoted key words can make cancellation, comparison and evidence boundaries visible. Convert only when the required form is known.

7. Control calculator copying

Store or write intermediate results systematically. A long display is not useful if a digit is transposed, the wrong line is reused or the unit changes unnoticed.

CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · Back to contents

9. Worked examples

Worked case 1: A calculation gives 2÷3 before multiplication by 90. Should 0.67 be used?

Controlled answer. No. Using the exact fraction gives 60, while early rounding gives 60.3.

Mechanism. Identify the exact relationship, apply the relevant rule and preserve every stated condition. A surface clue may be compatible with several explanations, so the answer must show what makes this case decisive.

Misconception repair. Do not turn partial evidence into complete proof. Name the closest wrong answer, identify its missing condition and explain why the observed evidence supports the narrower conclusion.

Transfer. Round only if the final instruction requires it. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.

Reverse construction. Begin with the controlled answer “No” and invent a fresh prompt that would justify it for the same reason. Then change one decisive condition to create a near-nonexample. This reverse task checks whether the learner owns the boundary rather than merely recognising the original sentence.

Explanation standard. A complete explanation names the observation, connects it to the rule and limits the conclusion to what follows. It should remain valid if decorative details are removed. If the explanation depends on the story topic instead of the decisive relation, rebuild it.

Audit. Recheck the exact source number wording unit diagram label or observation, the transformations performed during working, the final precision format paraphrase or classification requested, premature rounding meaning drift unit loss copied error evidence strength and independent checking. Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.

Worked case 2: A length is 4.786 cm to the nearest tenth. What is the final answer?

Controlled answer. 4.8 cm. Round once at the final step and retain the unit.

Transfer. Keep 4.786 during earlier calculations. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.

Reverse construction. Begin with the controlled answer “4.8 cm” and invent a fresh prompt that would justify it for the same reason.

Worked case 3: A passage says some residents objected. Can a summary say residents objected?

Controlled answer. It may overgeneralise. Some is decisive information about quantity.

Transfer. Preserve the quantifier. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.

Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.

Worked case 4: A character may have forgotten. Can the answer say the character forgot?

Controlled answer. No. May marks uncertainty, while the rewrite claims certainty.

Transfer. Use evidence-strength language. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.

Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.

Worked case 6: Why keep square centimetres visible in area work?

Controlled answer. The unit identifies the measured quantity and exposes dimension errors. Centimetres alone would describe length.

Transfer. Audit a conversion. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.

Reverse construction. Begin with the controlled answer “The unit identifies the measured quantity and exposes dimension errors” and invent a fresh prompt that would justify it for the same reason. 10. Independent practice

Practice 1: How can a fraction help checking?

Explained answer. Exact numerator and denominator reveal cancellation and proportional structure. A decimal may hide the relationship.

Delayed transfer. Convert only at the end. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Independent proof. Restate the answer without copying its wording. Your version must identify the evidence, the governing relationship and the boundary of the claim. Then write one fact that would be relevant but still insufficient on its own. This separates explanation from repetition.

Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.

Practice 2: What is wrong with copying an approximate diagram angle as exact?

Explained answer. Diagrams may not be drawn to scale. Use stated relationships and labels.

Delayed transfer. Treat appearance as a check, not proof. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.

Practice 3: When should paraphrasing occur?

Explained answer. After the source meaning and evidence strength are identified. Early loose paraphrase can erase decisive details.

Delayed transfer. Map each key idea. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Delayed transfer. Audit the instruction verb. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 6: What if the question gives no rounding instruction?

Explained answer. Use an exact form when appropriate or a sensible justified precision. Do not invent excessive precision.

Delayed transfer. State assumptions cautiously. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 7: How does an independent check help?

Explained answer. It can catch copied digits, unit loss and meaning drift through a different route. The same working repeated may repeat the same error.

Delayed transfer. Use estimation or substitution. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 8: State the full method.

Explained answer. Capture exact source information, preserve it through transformations, carry units and claim strength, check independently, then convert once to the required final form. Do not confuse exact working with over-detailed presentation.

Delayed transfer. Apply after a delay in all three subjects.

11. Delayed transfer

On day one, solve clear examples. On day three, mix examples, near-nonexamples and incomplete evidence. On day seven, solve without headings or a word bank. Delay reveals whether the method can be reconstructed independently.

Keep an error log for the first failed stage: reading, representation, rule, execution or checking. The earliest failure identifies the repair.

Interleave this skill with neighbouring ideas that share vocabulary. Classify each item only after naming the distinguishing condition.

In timed work, mark the relationship, apply the rule, write the conclusion and audit one condition. If checking changes the answer, record the overlooked feature.

Create a teach-back card with a near-nonexample on the front and the repaired mechanism on the back. Explain why the tempting answer fails.

Finish with one basic example, one boundary case and one transfer case. Supply explanations that a classmate can verify.

For a second delayed test, reverse the direction: start from a conclusion and invent evidence that would justify it, then evidence that would be insufficient. This exposes the boundary between relevance and proof.

12. Family guidance and FAQs

Guidance for parents and tutors

Ask for the decisive condition before confirming the answer. Use prompts such as “What exactly happened?”, “Which stage or meaning is this?” and “What would prove it?”

Fade support from labelled examples to mixed questions and delayed open response. Independent retrieval after time and topic change is the target.

Praise precise claim control. Narrowing an answer when evidence is incomplete is scientific and academic strength.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorise the rule?

Memorise the compact rule, then practise examples and near-nonexamples so the conditions remain visible.

What if two answers seem possible?

Return to the exact relationship and choose the option satisfying every stated condition without adding facts.

Why delay practice?

Immediate repetition may depend on the recent explanation; delay tests reconstruction.

How should an error be corrected?

Name the first failed stage and practise it with a changed example.

When is the skill ready?

When the learner can explain, apply and transfer it after a delay.

What is the final audit?

Check relationship, mechanism, claim strength and whole-question fit.
