How to Perform in PSLE | Learner’s Guide Vol 1014 | Mathematics: The Square of a Whole Number Ending in 5 Always Ends in 25

PSLE Learner’s Guide · Volume 1014

Find your next learning step

If a whole number ends in 5, its square always ends in 25; writing the number as 10k + 5 reveals why the final two digits are fixed.

Series routes: Use the complete PSLE Learner’s Guide volume directory, the original PSLE Learning Guide and the Mathematics learning hub.

This guide uses original Primary 6 practice and does not predict a live question. Consult the SEAB PSLE formats examined in 2026 page for official information.

1. Observe the stable ending

The squares 5², 15², 25² and 35² are 25, 225, 625 and 1225. Their sizes differ, but their final two digits are always 25.

Build the explanation by naming the whole number’s final digit and the leading part before that digit and the representation 10k plus 5 and the expansion of its square. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

Repair the nearest misconception by checking the multiple of 100 plus 25 that fixes the final two digits and returning to place value square exponent identity pattern shortcut leading part next integer last two digits proof converse verification and problem scope. State why the tempting alternative is too strong, incomplete or about a different stage.

3. Expand to prove the rule

(10k + 5)² = 100k² + 100k + 25 = 100k(k + 1) + 25. The first term is a multiple of 100, so only 25 remains in the last two places.

9. Worked examples

Worked case 1: Find 15² using the shortcut.

Controlled answer. 225. The leading part is 1, and 1 × 2 = 2; append 25.

Mechanism. Identify the exact relationship, apply the relevant rule and preserve every stated condition. A surface clue may be compatible with several explanations, so the answer must show what makes this case decisive.

Misconception repair. Do not turn partial evidence into complete proof. Name the closest wrong answer, identify its missing condition and explain why the observed evidence supports the narrower conclusion.

CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · Back to contents

10. Independent practice

Practice 1: Does 52² have to end in 25?

Explained answer. No. The number contains a 5 but ends in 2, so the condition fails.

Delayed transfer. Find its actual last digit. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Independent proof. Restate the answer without copying its wording. Your version must identify the evidence, the governing relationship and the boundary of the claim. Then write one fact that would be relevant but still insufficient on its own. This separates explanation from repetition.

Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.

Practice 2: Does 150² end in 25?

Explained answer. No. The number ends in 0 rather than 5.

Delayed transfer. Predict its ending before calculating. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 3: Can the shortcut be used for 7.5² under this whole-number rule?

Explained answer. No. The stated proof assumes a whole number of the form 10k + 5 with whole-number k.

Delayed transfer. Use an appropriate decimal method instead. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 4: What is 5² under the shortcut?

Explained answer. 25. The leading part zero gives 0 × 1, then 25.

Delayed transfer. Explain why no leading zero is written. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 5: A learner writes 35² = 3 × 4 × 25. Repair it.

Explained answer. Compute 3 × 4 = 12, then append 25 to get 1225. Appending digits is not the same as multiplying by 25.

Delayed transfer. Compare 12×25 with 1225. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.

Practice 6: Why are examples alone insufficient as proof?

Explained answer. They test only selected numbers. The algebraic form 10k + 5 represents every whole number ending in 5.

Delayed transfer. State the universal step. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 8: State the full method.

Explained answer. Verify that the whole number ends in 5, write it conceptually as 10k plus 5, use the identity giving 100k(k plus 1) plus 25, multiply k by k plus 1, append 25, and check the magnitude or multiply conventionally. The method proves the invariant ending and controls shortcut errors.

Delayed transfer. Apply after a delayed square-pattern problem. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

11. Delayed transfer

On day one, solve clear examples. On day three, mix examples, near-nonexamples and incomplete evidence. On day seven, solve without headings or a word bank. Delay reveals whether the method can be reconstructed independently.

Keep an error log for the first failed stage: reading, representation, rule, execution or checking. The earliest failure identifies the repair.

Interleave this skill with neighbouring ideas that share vocabulary. Classify each item only after naming the distinguishing condition.

In timed work, mark the relationship, apply the rule, write the conclusion and audit one condition. If checking changes the answer, record the overlooked feature.

Create a teach-back card with a near-nonexample on the front and the repaired mechanism on the back. Explain why the tempting answer fails.

Finish with one basic example, one boundary case and one transfer case. Supply explanations that a classmate can verify.

For a second delayed test, reverse the direction: start from a conclusion and invent evidence that would justify it, then evidence that would be insufficient. This exposes the boundary between relevance and proof.

12. Family guidance and FAQs

Guidance for parents and tutors

Ask for the decisive condition before confirming the answer. Use prompts such as “What exactly happened?”, “Which stage or meaning is this?” and “What would prove it?”

Fade support from labelled examples to mixed questions and delayed open response. Independent retrieval after time and topic change is the target.

Praise precise claim control. Narrowing an answer when evidence is incomplete is scientific and academic strength.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorise the rule?

Memorise the compact rule, then practise examples and near-nonexamples so the conditions remain visible.

What if two answers seem possible?

Return to the exact relationship and choose the option satisfying every stated condition without adding facts.

Why delay practice?

Immediate repetition may depend on the recent explanation; delay tests reconstruction.

How should an error be corrected?

Name the first failed stage and practise it with a changed example.

When is the skill ready?

When the learner can explain, apply and transfer it after a delay.

What is the final audit?

Check relationship, mechanism, claim strength and whole-question fit.
