1. Separate detail from accuracy
Decimal places describe how many digits appear after the decimal point. Accuracy concerns closeness to a true or accepted value, so the two ideas answer different questions.
Build the explanation by naming the reported value its source data and the required rounding instruction and the instrument resolution original measurement and valid reference used to judge accuracy. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.
Repair the nearest misconception by checking whether added digits contain evidence or merely create an unsupported appearance of precision and returning to decimal place significant figure rounding truncation calculator display exact measured estimated precision resolution uncertainty accuracy repeatability reference context and claim strength. State why the tempting alternative is too strong, incomplete or about a different stage.
- Check the reported value its source data and the required rounding instruction.
- Check the instrument resolution original measurement and valid reference used to judge accuracy.

2. Respect source resolution
A length measured only to the nearest centimetre does not become more informative when written as 12.000 cm. The added zeros were not observed.

3. Round from reliable information
Carry sufficient working digits during calculation, then round once to the requested form. Adding digits after rounding cannot restore information already lost.

4. Read calculator displays cautiously
A calculator can show many digits generated from entered values. Those digits may be mathematically consistent while exceeding the accuracy of measured inputs.
Build the explanation by naming the reported value its source data and the required rounding instruction and the instrument resolution original measurement and valid reference used to judge accuracy. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · Back to contents
5. Use a reference to judge accuracy
To claim one value is more accurate, compare both with a justified reference or true value. More digits alone provide no such comparison.
Build the explanation by naming the reported value its source data and the required rounding instruction and the instrument resolution original measurement and valid reference used to judge accuracy. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · Back to contents
6. Distinguish precision and repeatability
Closely grouped repeated readings can show consistency, yet all may share a bias. Decimal formatting cannot prove either consistency or accuracy by itself.
Build the explanation by naming the reported value its source data and the required rounding instruction and the instrument resolution original measurement and valid reference used to judge accuracy. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · Back to contents
7. Control language in explanations
Say reported to three decimal places, measured to the nearest unit or close to the reference. Avoid precise and accurate as empty praise.

8. Audit the result
Trace the data source, units and resolution; preserve exact values during work; follow the rounding instruction; compare with a reference when available; and remove unsupported digits.

9. Worked examples
Worked case 1: A ruler reads to the nearest centimetre and gives 12 cm. Is 12.000 cm more accurate?
Controlled answer. No. The extra zeros add display detail but no new measurement evidence.
Mechanism. Identify the exact relationship, apply the relevant rule and preserve every stated condition. A surface clue may be compatible with several explanations, so the answer must show what makes this case decisive.
Misconception repair. Do not turn partial evidence into complete proof. Name the closest wrong answer, identify its missing condition and explain why the observed evidence supports the narrower conclusion.
Transfer. State the justified resolution. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.
Explanation standard. A complete explanation names the observation, connects it to the rule and limits the conclusion to what follows. It should remain valid if decorative details are removed. If the explanation depends on the story topic instead of the decisive relation, rebuild it.
Audit. Recheck the reported value its source data and the required rounding instruction, the instrument resolution original measurement and valid reference used to judge accuracy, whether added digits contain evidence or merely create an unsupported appearance of precision, decimal place significant figure rounding truncation calculator display exact measured estimated precision resolution uncertainty accuracy repeatability reference context and claim strength. Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.
Worked case 2: True value is 5.00. Which is closer: 4.99 or 5.12345?
Controlled answer. 4.99. Closeness to the reference determines accuracy, not digit count.

10. Independent practice
Practice 1: Repair: every calculator digit should be copied.
Explained answer. Report only digits justified by exact inputs or measurement resolution and the question instruction. The display may exceed meaningful certainty.
Delayed transfer. State the rounding rule. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.
Independent proof. Restate the answer without copying its wording. Your version must identify the evidence, the governing relationship and the boundary of the claim. Then write one fact that would be relevant but still insufficient on its own. This separates explanation from repetition.
Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.
Practice 2: What does nearest 0.1 mean?
Explained answer. Rounded to one decimal place or the nearest tenth. Values within half a tenth can round to the same report, subject to the usual boundary convention.
Delayed transfer. Give a compatible interval.
Practice 3: What does truncation do?
Explained answer. It cuts off later digits without rounding. Truncation and rounding can produce different values.
Delayed transfer. Apply both to 4.789 at two decimals. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.
Practice 4: Can extra decimal places improve a calculation when the inputs are exact?
Explained answer. Keeping working digits can reduce rounding loss. That is different from claiming the final answer is more accurate than the model or data.
Delayed transfer. Round only at the required end. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 5: Why are units part of an accuracy statement?
Explained answer. Error and resolution have meaning only for the measured quantity and unit. A bare decimal does not identify scale.
Delayed transfer. Attach the correct unit. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 6: In English, why is highly accurate vague?
Explained answer. It omits the reference, method and error tolerance. A precise statement names how accuracy was assessed.
Delayed transfer. Rewrite with an accepted value and error. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 7: What is the fastest audit?
Explained answer. Ask where every displayed digit came from and what reference tests closeness. Unsupported digits should be removed or qualified.
Delayed transfer. Then follow the specified rounding instruction.

Practice 8: State the full method.
Explained answer. Identify whether values are exact measured or estimated, record the source resolution, preserve exact or guard digits during working, round once to the requested form, compare with a valid reference to judge accuracy, and report only digits the evidence supports. The method prevents false precision across calculations measurements and written claims.
Delayed transfer. Apply after a delayed data-reporting task.

CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · Back to contents
11. Delayed transfer
On day one, solve clear examples. On day three, mix examples, near-nonexamples and incomplete evidence. On day seven, solve without headings or a word bank. Delay reveals whether the method can be reconstructed independently.
Keep an error log for the first failed stage: reading, representation, rule, execution or checking. The earliest failure identifies the repair.
Interleave this skill with neighbouring ideas that share vocabulary. Classify each item only after naming the distinguishing condition.
In timed work, mark the relationship, apply the rule, write the conclusion and audit one condition. If checking changes the answer, record the overlooked feature.
Create a teach-back card with a near-nonexample on the front and the repaired mechanism on the back. Explain why the tempting answer fails.
Finish with one basic example, one boundary case and one transfer case. Supply explanations that a classmate can verify.
For a second delayed test, reverse the direction: start from a conclusion and invent evidence that would justify it, then evidence that would be insufficient. This exposes the boundary between relevance and proof.

12. Family guidance and FAQs
Guidance for parents and tutors
Ask for the decisive condition before confirming the answer. Use prompts such as “What exactly happened?”, “Which stage or meaning is this?” and “What would prove it?”
Fade support from labelled examples to mixed questions and delayed open response. Independent retrieval after time and topic change is the target.
Praise precise claim control. Narrowing an answer when evidence is incomplete is scientific and academic strength.
Frequently asked questions
Should I memorise the rule?
Memorise the compact rule, then practise examples and near-nonexamples so the conditions remain visible.
What if two answers seem possible?
Return to the exact relationship and choose the option satisfying every stated condition without adding facts.
Why delay practice?
Immediate repetition may depend on the recent explanation; delay tests reconstruction.
How should an error be corrected?
Name the first failed stage and practise it with a changed example.
When is the skill ready?
When the learner can explain, apply and transfer it after a delay.
What is the final audit?
Check relationship, mechanism, claim strength and whole-question fit.
