JC2 VOCABULARY · SOURCE → EVIDENCE JOB → INTERPRETATION → LIMIT → CITATION
Build the source-use map before the essay turns links into evidence
The core aim of JC2 vocabulary in a source-use map is to separate what a source is, what evidence job it can perform, how the writer interprets it, what limits that use and how the reader can retrieve it. The map prevents a polished paragraph from hiding weak provenance, duplicated evidence or a conclusion stronger than the method supports.
Choose a route: use the SOURCE map · diagnose source-use failures · work forty source types · compare argument terms · practise synthesis · check independent transfer
You may be here because a research folder contains twenty tabs but no answer to “What does this source let me claim?” The useful answer is a source-use map: identity and version, specific evidence, intended paragraph job, interpretation, limitation, relation to other sources and a retrievable citation route.
JC2 vocabulary becomes intellectually useful through terms such as provenance, operational definition, sampling frame, corroborates, qualifies, counterevidence, scope, version, synthesis, inference and citation trail. The aim is not a longer bibliography. It is a reasoning system that keeps evidence, interpretation and limitation connected while the argument changes.
For Singapore A-Level General Paper candidates, the 2026 SEAB General Paper 8881 syllabus includes critical reading, evaluation and synthesis of arguments and evidence, independent research, and clear, accurate, effective language. The source-use map in this article is original guidance, not an SEAB-prescribed format or examination prediction. Candidates in later years must check their own examination-year syllabus. Source reviewed 27 October 2026.
JC2 is a Singapore learning stage and is not automatically equivalent to an international grade, age or qualification. Schools may teach other syllabuses. Citation conventions also differ by subject and institution; always use the required style, assessment instructions and academic-integrity rules.
1. SOURCE: seven fields that turn a saved link into an accountable use
S — Source identity
Record author or institution, title, publication, date, version and stable identifier. A URL is a location, not a complete identity.
Field 1 should be completed in words that fit the actual source, not by ticking a generic quality label. A government page, experiment, literary text and opinion column require different questions because they perform different evidence jobs.
O — Origin and method
Ask how the claim was produced: experiment, survey, archive, legal reasoning, reporting, synthesis or opinion. Method controls what the source can support.
Field 2 should be completed in words that fit the actual source, not by ticking a generic quality label. A government page, experiment, literary text and opinion column require different questions because they perform different evidence jobs.
U — Use in this argument
Name the exact job: define, quantify, illustrate, complicate, provide a counterexample, establish chronology or show a stakeholder position.
Field 3 should be completed in words that fit the actual source, not by ticking a generic quality label. A government page, experiment, literary text and opinion column require different questions because they perform different evidence jobs.
R — Reading and interpretation
Separate the source’s stated claim from your inference about significance. Quote or paraphrase accurately and explain the reasoning link.
Field 4 should be completed in words that fit the actual source, not by ticking a generic quality label. A government page, experiment, literary text and opinion column require different questions because they perform different evidence jobs.
C — Constraints
Record scope, sample, date, jurisdiction, genre, missing data, conflicts of interest and uncertainty that materially affect use.
Field 5 should be completed in words that fit the actual source, not by ticking a generic quality label. A government page, experiment, literary text and opinion column require different questions because they perform different evidence jobs.
E — Evidence relations
State whether another source corroborates, qualifies, contradicts, extends or merely repeats it. Trace common origins to avoid false independence.
Field 6 should be completed in words that fit the actual source, not by ticking a generic quality label. A government page, experiment, literary text and opinion column require different questions because they perform different evidence jobs.
+ Citation route
Keep page, table, section, DOI, archive ID or stable URL so another reader can verify the use and you can revise without hunting.
Field 7 should be completed in words that fit the actual source, not by ticking a generic quality label. A government page, experiment, literary text and opinion column require different questions because they perform different evidence jobs.
| Field | Map question | Short entry |
| Identity | What exactly is this version? | Agency, table, release date |
| Method | How was the claim produced? | survey, sample and weighting |
| Use | What sentence job can it do? | quantifies the stated national trend |
| Interpretation | What do I infer? | suggests change during the period |
| Limit | Where does the inference stop? | self-report; definitions revised |
| Relation | How does it meet other evidence? | qualified by subgroup study |
| Route | How can it be checked? | table number and stable URL |

5. Thirty synthesis laboratories with explained answers
Synthesis laboratory 1: public trust in institutions
For laboratory 1 on public trust in institutions, map national statistics table as the anchor, court judgment as a method or scope check and podcast interview as a contrasting genre. Record identity, origin, exact evidence job, interpretation, material limitation and citation route before drafting.
In laboratory 1, write a public trust in institutions relation using evidence and test whether example changes the claim. Explain whether agreement among national statistics table, court judgment and podcast interview is independent or traces to shared origins.
Now narrow the laboratory 1 thesis to the mapped evidence. Preserve the date, jurisdiction, population and genre boundaries represented by national statistics table. Add counterevidence or a qualification that genuinely changes the reasoning.
Finally, remove court judgment from laboratory 1. If the argument is unchanged, it may have been ornamental. If removing it collapses the inference, check that its method and citation route deserve that load. Record what evidence would improve this public trust in institutions map.
Explained answer 1

7. Progress, transfer and boundaries for JC2 researchers
Progress appears when a student can map an unfamiliar source without a teacher supplying the evaluation. Check delayed transfer: after a week, can the student reconstruct why a source was saved, find the exact passage, state the evidence job, preserve the limitation and revise the citation when the claim changes?
| Dimension | Emerging | Developing | Independent transfer |
| Identity | Stores a link | Adds author and title | Tracks version, date and stable identifier |
| Use | Calls source “useful” | Names a topic connection | Names an exact paragraph/evidence job |
| Interpretation | Copies summary | Adds an inference | Explains the reasoning link and alternatives |
| Limitation | Lists “bias” | Names one boundary | Shows how the boundary changes the claim |
| Synthesis | Lists sources | Uses agreement/disagreement | Traces relation and common origins |
| Citation | Bibliography only | Adds in-text citation | Keeps page/table/section route through revision |
Actions for students, parents and teachers
- Start the map before drafting, but revise it whenever the claim changes.
- Save stable bibliographic details and lawful identifiers, not only browser tabs.
- Require an evidence-job verb for every source.
- Trace whether apparent corroboration shares one origin.
- Preserve the source’s modal force and scope.
- Teach limitation as a boundary on use, not ritual fault-finding.
- Follow the school’s citation and AI-use policies exactly.
- Practise with mixed genres so authority is judged by purpose and method.
Limits and examination boundaries
This article is not an examination forecast, a replacement for subject teaching or a universal citation style. The 2026 GP syllabus is cited as a current official example of evaluation and synthesis expectations; later candidates must use their examination-year documents. Source evaluation varies by discipline: a poem, dataset, judgment and experiment do not earn credibility in the same way.
Useful next routes
- Use the eduKate Vocabulary Learning Hub for wider vocabulary systems.
- For the existing JC2 workflow owner, read writing a consultation agenda that makes fifteen minutes useful.
- Check the current SEAB 2026 A-Level syllabus listing and, for later cohorts, the relevant examination-year listing.

8. Frequently asked questions
Is a primary source always better?
No. “Primary” describes relation to the event or data; usefulness depends on the question, access, method and context.
How many sources should a paragraph use?
Enough to perform the needed evidence jobs; there is no responsible universal count.
Can a recent source be weaker than an older one?
Yes. Currency does not replace relevance, method or authority.
Is bias enough to reject a source?
No. Identify the specific perspective or systematic distortion and show how it affects the intended use.
Can a quotation be evidence?
Yes when accurate, contextualised and connected through reasoning; quotation alone is not proof.
What if two articles cite the same study?
Treat them as related reporting, not automatically independent corroboration.
Should every limitation appear in the essay?
Include those that materially change the claim; keep the fuller map for planning.
Can I cite an AI answer?
Follow school rules. For factual and academic claims, retrieve and inspect accountable underlying sources.
Does SOURCE replace a bibliography manager?
No. It records reasoning jobs; a manager stores and formats citations. They complement each other.
Is this only for General Paper?
No. The map transfers to history, literature, sciences and university preparation, but each discipline needs its own method questions.
Final practical answer: identify the source and version, describe how it produced knowledge, assign one exact evidence job, separate source claim from your inference, record material limits, map relations to other sources and keep a retrievable citation route.
