1. Separate total from composition
A total combines parts into one number or statement. Two situations can share the same total while containing different component values.
Build the explanation by naming the system boundary total component categories starting values and final values and the balancing increases decreases transfers replacements or transformations that can cancel in the total. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.
Repair the nearest misconception by checking whether an unchanged aggregate supports only total conservation or also claims about individual parts and returning to total part component net gross increase decrease transfer exchange composition proportion distribution before after boundary table equation evidence mechanism conservation and claim strength. State why the tempting alternative is too strong, incomplete or about a different stage.

2. Track changes with signs
An increase in one part can be balanced by an equal decrease in another. The net total is zero even though two real changes occurred.
Build the explanation by naming the system boundary total component categories starting values and final values and the balancing increases decreases transfers replacements or transformations that can cancel in the total. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

3. Define the system boundary
A stable amount inside one boundary may hide movement between internal categories. Changing the boundary can turn an internal transfer into an inflow or outflow.
Build the explanation by naming the system boundary total component categories starting values and final values and the balancing increases decreases transfers replacements or transformations that can cancel in the total. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

State why the tempting alternative is too strong, incomplete or about a different stage.
CHAPTER 4 OF 12 · Back to contents
4. Use before-and-after tables
List every relevant component in matching rows, calculate each change and then sum the changes. The table shows what the unchanged total conceals.

5. Distinguish replacement from no change
One item, word, organism or quantity may leave while another enters. The count can remain constant even though identity and composition change.

CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · Back to contents
6. Control language claims
The evidence supports ‘the total stayed the same’, not automatically ‘nothing changed’, ‘every part stayed the same’ or ‘the system was inactive’.
Build the explanation by naming the system boundary total component categories starting values and final values and the balancing increases decreases transfers replacements or transformations that can cancel in the total. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

7. Look for offsetting mechanisms
English revisions can swap words without changing length; Mathematics can redistribute quantities; Science systems can transfer matter internally while total measured amount is stable.

CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · Back to contents
8. Audit the conclusion
Name the total, enumerate parts, calculate or describe each change, check the boundary, explain any offsets and keep the final claim at the aggregate or component level actually supported.

9. Worked examples
Worked case 1: A box still contains 20 counters after 3 red counters are removed and 3 blue counters are added. Did every part stay unchanged?
Controlled answer. No. The total stayed 20, but the colour composition changed.
Mechanism. Identify the exact relationship, apply the relevant rule and preserve every stated condition. A surface clue may be compatible with several explanations, so the answer must show what makes this case decisive.
Misconception repair. Do not turn partial evidence into complete proof. Name the closest wrong answer, identify its missing condition and explain why the observed evidence supports the narrower conclusion.
Transfer. Track entries and exits by category. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.

10. Independent practice
Practice 1: Build a before-after table for parts 6 and 4 becoming 3 and 7.
Explained answer. The total is 10 before and after; the first part changes by minus 3 and the second by plus 3. The table exposes equal offsetting changes.
Delayed transfer. Use matching component labels. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.
Independent proof. Restate the answer without copying its wording. Your version must identify the evidence, the governing relationship and the boundary of the claim. Then write one fact that would be relevant but still insufficient on its own. This separates explanation from repetition.
Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.
Practice 2: Can a balanced chemical or physical system show internal change with stable total mass?
Explained answer. Yes, within an appropriately closed measured system. Matter can change form or location while total measured mass remains stable.
Delayed transfer. Do not infer no process occurred. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 6: What language safely reports the evidence?
Explained answer. The measured total was unchanged, while the available component data show specified increases and decreases. This distinguishes observation from inference.
Delayed transfer. Avoid saying nothing changed. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 7: Why do offsetting errors matter in checking?
Explained answer. Two mistakes can cancel numerically and produce the expected total. A correct total does not prove every step or component is correct.
Delayed transfer. Check parts independently. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 8: State the full method.
Explained answer. Define the system and aggregate, list all relevant parts with matching labels, record before and after values, calculate each signed change, sum the changes, identify transfers replacements or transformations that offset, test for missing components, and state separately what is known about the total and each part. The method prevents net stability from erasing internal change.
Delayed transfer. Apply it after a delayed mixed table passage or experiment. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.
Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.
Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

11. Delayed transfer
On day one, solve clear examples. On day three, mix examples, near-nonexamples and incomplete evidence. On day seven, solve without headings or a word bank. Delay reveals whether the method can be reconstructed independently.
Keep an error log for the first failed stage: reading, representation, rule, execution or checking. The earliest failure identifies the repair.
Interleave this skill with neighbouring ideas that share vocabulary. Classify each item only after naming the distinguishing condition.
In timed work, mark the relationship, apply the rule, write the conclusion and audit one condition. If checking changes the answer, record the overlooked feature.
Create a teach-back card with a near-nonexample on the front and the repaired mechanism on the back. Explain why the tempting answer fails.
Finish with one basic example, one boundary case and one transfer case. Supply explanations that a classmate can verify.
For a second delayed test, reverse the direction: start from a conclusion and invent evidence that would justify it, then evidence that would be insufficient. This exposes the boundary between relevance and proof.

12. Family guidance and FAQs
Guidance for parents and tutors
Ask for the decisive condition before confirming the answer. Use prompts such as “What exactly happened?”, “Which stage or meaning is this?” and “What would prove it?”
Fade support from labelled examples to mixed questions and delayed open response. Independent retrieval after time and topic change is the target.
Praise precise claim control. Narrowing an answer when evidence is incomplete is scientific and academic strength.
Frequently asked questions
Should I memorise the rule?
Memorise the compact rule, then practise examples and near-nonexamples so the conditions remain visible.
What if two answers seem possible?
Return to the exact relationship and choose the option satisfying every stated condition without adding facts.
Why delay practice?
Immediate repetition may depend on the recent explanation; delay tests reconstruction.
How should an error be corrected?
Name the first failed stage and practise it with a changed example.
When is the skill ready?
When the learner can explain, apply and transfer it after a delay.
What is the final audit?
Check relationship, mechanism, claim strength and whole-question fit.
