How to Perform in PSLE | Learner’s Guide Vol 1059 | Science: Moving a Switch Along the Same Simple Series Path Does Not Change What It Controls

PSLE Learner’s Guide · Volume 1059

Find your next learning step

In one simple unbranched series loop, an open switch breaks the only path wherever it is placed. Its drawn position matters only when moving it changes the circuit connections or branch controlled.

Series routes: Use the complete PSLE Learner’s Guide volume directory, the original PSLE Learning Guide and the Science learning hub.

This guide uses original Primary 6 practice and does not predict a live question. Consult the SEAB PSLE formats examined in 2026 page for official information.

1. Trace connectivity, not page position

A circuit diagram records connections. A switch drawn before or after a bulb is not automatically more powerful; what matters is whether opening it interrupts the conducting path that includes the bulb.

Build the explanation by naming the cell wires bulbs switch contacts junctions and every possible conducting path and the structural mechanism by which an open switch breaks a path and a closed switch reconnects it. A remembered keyword is not enough: connect the observation to the mechanism and identify what would have to change for the conclusion to change.

Repair the nearest misconception by checking whether the circuit remains one simple series loop or has branches altered contacts faulty components or changed connections and returning to switch open closed series circuit branch loop path current control position diagram connection junction component contact conductor fault prediction and fair comparison. State why the tempting alternative is too strong, incomplete or about a different stage.

2. Use the one-path condition

In a simple series circuit there is only one route from one cell terminal through every component and back to the other terminal. A break anywhere opens that only route.

3. Explain the open switch

An open switch separates its contacts. The path is incomplete, so current cannot continue around the full loop and every component in that lone series path stops operating.

4. Explain the closed switch

A closed switch connects its contacts. If the rest of the path is complete, components work and contacts conduct, the loop can carry current. Closing does not repair a separate fault elsewhere.

5. Move without rewiring

If a switch is relocated along the same unbranched wire while all component connections stay in series, its control effect is unchanged. The order on the drawing does not create a new path.

6. Protect the branch boundary

In a parallel circuit, a switch placed before a junction may interrupt all branches, while a switch inside one branch may interrupt only that branch. Moving it across a junction changes connectivity and therefore changes control.

7. Do not treat current as waiting behind the switch

The circuit responds as a complete system. An open path means no sustained current around that loop; current is not stored on one side waiting to be released like water in a tank.

8. Audit the complete setup

Mark every junction, trace each possible route and imagine the switch open and closed. Predict control from path interruption, then check cells, bulbs, wires and contacts before concluding.

9. Worked examples

Worked case 1: One cell, one bulb and one switch form a single loop. The switch is open. Does the bulb light?

Controlled answer. No. The only conducting path is broken.

Mechanism. Identify the exact relationship, apply the relevant rule and preserve every stated condition. A surface clue may be compatible with several explanations, so the answer must show what makes this case decisive.

Misconception repair. Do not turn partial evidence into complete proof. Name the closest wrong answer, identify its missing condition and explain why the observed evidence supports the narrower conclusion.

Transfer. Move the switch to the other side of the bulb without changing connections. Solve the altered case from the mechanism rather than copying the previous wording.

Explanation standard. A complete explanation names the observation, connects it to the rule and limits the conclusion to what follows. It should remain valid if decorative details are removed. If the explanation depends on the story topic instead of the decisive relation, rebuild it.

Audit. Recheck the cell wires bulbs switch contacts junctions and every possible conducting path, the structural mechanism by which an open switch breaks a path and a closed switch reconnects it, whether the circuit remains one simple series loop or has branches altered contacts faulty components or changed connections, switch open closed series circuit branch loop path current control position diagram connection junction component contact conductor fault prediction and fair comparison. Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.

Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.

Worked case 6: A switch is moved from before a parallel junction into one branch. Is this the same circuit control?

Controlled answer. No. The first position can interrupt all branches, while the branch position can interrupt only one route.

Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.

Worked case 8: Can an open switch in one parallel branch switch off an intact second branch?

Decide whether the evidence proves the conclusion or only supports a limited statement.

Worked case 9: Repair: Electricity reaches the first bulb before the switch, so that bulb remains on.

10. Independent practice

Practice 1: A closed switch has dirty non-conducting contacts. Is the path electrically complete?

Explained answer. No. Physical closure alone is insufficient if the contact does not conduct.

Delayed transfer. Distinguish drawn symbol from actual condition. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Independent proof. Restate the answer without copying its wording. Your version must identify the evidence, the governing relationship and the boundary of the claim. Then write one fact that would be relevant but still insufficient on its own. This separates explanation from repetition.

Delayed comparison. Save this item beside the near-nonexample you created. On the next attempt, compare them before answering and point to the single feature that controls the difference. If more than one feature changed, revise the pair so the comparison stays fair.

Practice 2: A wire bypasses an open switch. Can current still have a route?

Explained answer. Yes, if the bypass forms a complete conducting path. The bypass creates an alternate connection.

Delayed transfer. Redraw the circuit and mark the branch. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 3: Where should a master switch for two parallel branches be placed?

Explained answer. On the shared path before the split or after the branches rejoin. Opening it interrupts every complete route through the source.

Delayed transfer. Compare with a switch inside one branch. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 4: Why is the phrase same series path important?

Explained answer. Moving across a junction or changing connections can alter which paths are broken. The conclusion is conditional on preserved topology.

Delayed transfer. Name the changed connection in a near-nonexample. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 5: Does a switch consume current when open?

Explained answer. No sustained current flows around the broken loop. The switch creates an open circuit rather than using up current.

Delayed transfer. Keep the explanation structural. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 6: What is the fastest diagram check?

Explained answer. Trace every complete route from one cell terminal back to the other with the switch in each state. A route exists only when every connection on it conducts.

Delayed transfer. Mark junctions before predicting bulbs. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Explained answer. Keep the same cell components and connections except for the stated switch location. Otherwise a changed outcome may come from another circuit change.

Delayed transfer. List the controlled features. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

Practice 8: State the full method.

Explained answer. Identify cells components switches and junctions, trace every possible path, model the switch as connected when closed and separated when open, decide whether its position lies on a shared route or only one branch, and check other component faults before concluding what it controls. The method predicts operation from connectivity rather than drawing order.

Delayed transfer. Apply it after a delay to one series loop one parallel circuit and one bypass case. Cover the answer later and rebuild the chain.

Control question. Which exact condition does the nearest wrong answer miss? State it before checking.

Extension. Change one decisive feature while keeping the story similar. Explain why the conclusion now stays or changes.

11. Delayed transfer

On day one, solve clear examples. On day three, mix examples, near-nonexamples and incomplete evidence. On day seven, solve without headings or a word bank. Delay reveals whether the method can be reconstructed independently.

Keep an error log for the first failed stage: reading, representation, rule, execution or checking. The earliest failure identifies the repair.

Interleave this skill with neighbouring ideas that share vocabulary. Classify each item only after naming the distinguishing condition.

In timed work, mark the relationship, apply the rule, write the conclusion and audit one condition. If checking changes the answer, record the overlooked feature.

Create a teach-back card with a near-nonexample on the front and the repaired mechanism on the back. Explain why the tempting answer fails.

Finish with one basic example, one boundary case and one transfer case. Supply explanations that a classmate can verify.

For a second delayed test, reverse the direction: start from a conclusion and invent evidence that would justify it, then evidence that would be insufficient. This exposes the boundary between relevance and proof.

12. Family guidance and FAQs

Guidance for parents and tutors

Ask for the decisive condition before confirming the answer. Use prompts such as “What exactly happened?”, “Which stage or meaning is this?” and “What would prove it?”

Fade support from labelled examples to mixed questions and delayed open response. Independent retrieval after time and topic change is the target.

Praise precise claim control. Narrowing an answer when evidence is incomplete is scientific and academic strength.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorise the rule?

Memorise the compact rule, then practise examples and near-nonexamples so the conditions remain visible.

What if two answers seem possible?

Return to the exact relationship and choose the option satisfying every stated condition without adding facts.

Why delay practice?

Immediate repetition may depend on the recent explanation; delay tests reconstruction.

How should an error be corrected?

Name the first failed stage and practise it with a changed example.

When is the skill ready?

When the learner can explain, apply and transfer it after a delay.

What is the final audit?

Check relationship, mechanism, claim strength and whole-question fit.
