Use definitions, proof, models and computation to reveal structure—connecting pure mathematics with uncertainty, networks, optimisation, dynamics and other sciences
A fact-checked guide to the NUS Institute for Mathematical Sciences, fundamental and multidisciplinary research, proofs, models, programmes, workshops and careers.
NUS says the Institute for Mathematical Sciences was founded in 2000 as a university-level research institute for fundamental and multidisciplinary mathematical research.
Its mission includes linking mathematics with other disciplines, developing mathematical expertise, training research talent and connecting Singapore’s scientific community with international researchers.
IMS organises thematic programmes lasting one to six months, with workshops and tutorials, and conducts summer schools for graduate students and young scientists.
Did you know? A proof can be hundreds of pages long or one elegant paragraph. Length is not the test: every step must follow from stated definitions, assumptions and earlier results.
IMS and NUS control current programmes, participation and released materials; universities and responsible owners control admissions, qualifications and research decisions. This guide separates current published facts from practical learning advice. Programme details were checked on 28 October 2026; families and students should recheck the linked official pages before applying, paying or attending.

CHAPTER 1 OF 17 · Build mathematical language
1. Definitions create the objects of study
Mathematics begins by specifying objects, relations and operations precisely. Good definitions capture a useful structure without hiding assumptions.
Mathematical research makes assumptions and definitions explicit before reasoning from them. This discipline lets a result travel across applications without losing its conditions. The practical capability is mathematical-definition literacy. Keep the question, sample or model, method, raw evidence, processing, uncertainty, review and next decision in one dated receipt. IMS and NUS control current programmes, participation and released materials; universities and responsible owners control admissions, qualifications and research decisions.
Put this into practice by turning the idea into a small, reviewable action: Create a one-page evidence card for “Definitions create the objects of study” with the question, source or sample, method, observation, limitation and next check. Then ask what the resulting note or artefact actually demonstrates. A useful record names context, source or instruction, action, observation, interpretation and uncertainty. It also preserves this limit: Changing a definition can change the theorem.
Try this now
Create a one-page evidence card for “Definitions create the objects of study” with the question, source or sample, method, observation, limitation and next check. Label the result with the date and the capability “mathematical-definition literacy”.
An evidence check keeps confidence proportional to what the work can show. Separate the original observation or official statement from the learner’s explanation. Record feedback and any revision. If information is missing, write “not shown” or “not yet known” rather than guessing. That honest gap can become the next question.
Evidence checkpoint
Can another person trace the claim to a current source, observation or documented decision? Keep this boundary visible: Changing a definition can change the theorem.
CHAPTER 2 OF 17 · Build mathematical language
2. Abstraction preserves structure across contexts
A common pattern can appear in numbers, shapes, algorithms or physical systems. Abstraction removes irrelevant detail while keeping relationships needed for reasoning.
A proof explains why a statement follows in every permitted case; computation can reveal patterns and test examples but does not automatically replace the argument. The practical capability is structural-abstraction reasoning. Keep the question, sample or model, method, raw evidence, processing, uncertainty, review and next decision in one dated receipt. IMS and NUS control current programmes, participation and released materials; universities and responsible owners control admissions, qualifications and research decisions.
Put this into practice by turning the idea into a small, reviewable action: Create a one-page evidence card for “Abstraction preserves structure across contexts” with the question, source or sample, method, observation, limitation and next check. Then ask what the resulting note or artefact actually demonstrates. A useful record names context, source or instruction, action, observation, interpretation and uncertainty. It also preserves this limit: Abstract similarity does not make applications identical.

CHAPTER 3 OF 17 · Build mathematical language
3. A conjecture is an invitation to test
Patterns in examples can suggest a general statement. Researchers search for proofs, boundary cases and counterexamples before accepting it.
Models simplify reality deliberately. Their value comes from transparent choices, sensitivity checks and comparisons with data, not from complexity alone. The practical capability is conjecture-testing literacy. Keep the question, sample or model, method, raw evidence, processing, uncertainty, review and next decision in one dated receipt. IMS and NUS control current programmes, participation and released materials; universities and responsible owners control admissions, qualifications and research decisions.

Then ask what the resulting note or artefact actually demonstrates. A useful record names context, source or instruction, action, observation, interpretation and uncertainty. It also preserves this limit: Many confirming examples do not prove a universal claim.

CHAPTER 4 OF 17 · Build mathematical language
4. Proof explains why a result must hold
A proof links assumptions to a conclusion through valid logical steps. It should be inspectable by other mathematicians and explicit about established results used.
Mathematical collaboration often begins when different fields discover the same structure in networks, uncertainty, optimisation, geometry or change over time. The practical capability is proof reasoning.

It also preserves this limit: A persuasive diagram is not always a complete proof.

One permitted case that violates a universal claim disproves it. Counterexamples reveal which hypothesis or boundary needs revision.
Mathematical research makes assumptions and definitions explicit before reasoning from them. This discipline lets a result travel across applications without losing its conditions. The practical capability is counterexample design. Keep the question, sample or model, method, raw evidence, processing, uncertainty, review and next decision in one dated receipt. Then ask what the resulting note or artefact actually demonstrates. A useful record names context, source or instruction, action, observation, interpretation and uncertainty. It also preserves this limit: A counterexample must satisfy the original assumptions.

Science learning becomes useful when a student can show where a claim came from, why it applies and where it stops. Continue with the eduKate Science Learning Hub, compare choices in the Education Hub, and connect developing capabilities to education and career pathways. Families looking for science tuition or a science tutor can use the same evidence questions: what will the learner practise, what feedback will they receive, and how will progress be shown?
Use definitions, proof, models and computation to reveal structure—connecting pure mathematics with uncertainty, networks, optimisation, dynamics and other sciences The happiest outcome is not a perfect label. It is a learner who can ask a sharper question, work safely, notice honestly, revise with feedback and stay curious about what comes next.
