WHY ENGLISH?
Make a telehealth intervention visible from both sides of the connection
Telehealth is a delivery route, not a complete intervention description. A video visit, telephone session or remote digital programme still has materials, procedures, providers, timing, tailoring and fidelity. It also introduces two locations, connectivity needs and choices between live and asynchronous contact.
TIDieR-Telehealth was published in BMC Medical Research Methodology in 2022. It keeps the 12-item TIDieR structure and adds telehealth-specific considerations to every item, including remote access, equipment, preparation, provider credentials, delivery mode, participant and provider locations, dose and adherence.
English matters because phrases such as virtual care and remote session can hide whether contact was video or voice, live or delayed, individual or group, home-based or clinic-to-clinic. Clear reporting helps students follow the intervention without promising that remote delivery is private, equitable or equivalent to in-person care.

ORIENTATION
What this guide owns
Current fact check
TIDieR-Telehealth is a 2022 extension for reporting telehealth interventions. It applies telehealth-specific considerations across the original 12 TIDieR items rather than replacing TIDieR with a separate study-design checklist.
Canonical boundary
This article owns description of telehealth interventions with TIDieR-Telehealth. It does not own digital-health trial reporting generally, telehealth regulation, clinical suitability, cybersecurity assurance or proof that remote and in-person delivery are equivalent.
Worked example
Every chapter returns to a fictional trial adapting a structured student-support conversation from in-person meetings to scheduled remote sessions. It is fictional, low-stakes and educational; it does not report a real school, clinical decision or guaranteed outcome.
Did You Know? For TIDieR-Telehealth, complete reporting makes appraisal possible but does not perform the appraisal, remove bias or guarantee transfer.
Warm up with eduKate’s guides to explaining scientific evidence and asking better questions in class.
CHAPTER 1 OF 13
1. Name the Intervention as Telehealth
Why this move matters
Include telehealth or a clearly remote term in the brief name and distinguish it from a similarly named in-person service.
Did You Know? TIDieR-Telehealth asks the brief name to signal remote delivery.
Separate remote delivery from the underlying intervention
Include telehealth or a clearly remote term in the brief name and distinguish it from a similarly named in-person service. Name what is clinically or educationally active and what changed because delivery became remote. This prevents the word telehealth from replacing the intervention description.
Reconstruct one remote encounter
Use The report names Remote Structured Student-Support Sessions rather than support programme alone. Follow preparation, connection, identity, consent, communication, materials, contingency plans and follow-up from both participant and provider locations.
Describe synchronous and asynchronous work
State which tasks happen live, which occur between visits, what technology records and how the pieces connect. The same total duration can contain very different human contact and independent practice.
Keep access and safety bounded
A remote label still does not reveal the technology or interaction. Detailed telehealth reporting supports appraisal and replication; it does not prove privacy, equity, clinical appropriateness or equivalence to in-person delivery.
Practical reader check
- Point to the exact source or method sentence supporting the claim.
- Name the person, setting, date, input and decision rule that could change its meaning.
- Label the remaining uncertainty reported, inferred, contested or unknown.
Student, parent and career transfer
Make one evidence card for “Name the Intervention as Telehealth”: source location, plain-language meaning, limit and next question. A parent or teacher can ask for one everyday explanation and one specialist explanation; both must preserve the same conditions. This habit supports telehealth, education support, clinical research, service design, programme implementation and evidence communication without promising a grade, admission, funding decision or job.
CHAPTER 2 OF 13
2. Explain Why Remote Delivery Was Chosen
Why this move matters
State the telehealth-specific rationale such as reach, convenience, continuity, adherence or testing an established intervention remotely.
Did You Know? The Why item should justify the remote format, not only the intervention goal.
Separate remote delivery from the underlying intervention
State the telehealth-specific rationale such as reach, convenience, continuity, adherence or testing an established intervention remotely. Name what is clinically or educationally active and what changed because delivery became remote. This prevents the word telehealth from replacing the intervention description.
Reconstruct one remote encounter
Use Remote delivery is intended to preserve scheduled support when travel is difficult.

PRACTICE LAB
Build a telehealth decision trail
Student route
- Choose one original report inside this guide’s scope.
- Copy its objective and underline actor, action, context, evidence and intended decision.
- Draw the specific reasoning chain used in this article.
- Mark each step reported, inferred, contested or unknown.
- Rewrite the conclusion so it preserves the narrowest important limitation.
Parent or teacher route
Ask the learner to explain TIDieR-Telehealth’s central reporting method twice: once to a classmate and once to a method specialist. Praise a precise correction and a well-stated unknown; both show disciplined attention to evidence.
Early-career route
Create a one-page TIDieR-Telehealth audit with source link, date checked, scope, method logic, decisive wording, contrary evidence, limit and next action. A colleague should be able to continue without guessing.
Decision rule
If a shorter explanation removes the condition that made the original claim true, it is not clearer yet. Restore the condition.

Read the TIDieR-PHP population-health and policy intervention guide for a related but different reader job. Return here when the question is specifically how to make a telehealth intervention visible from both sides of the connection. This boundary keeps one canonical owner per intent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions students and parents often ask
What is TIDieR-Telehealth?
A telehealth-specific extension to the 12-item TIDieR intervention checklist.
Does telehealth mean video?
Not necessarily. It can include voice, text, asynchronous and hybrid delivery.
Why report both locations?
Provider and participant settings can each affect privacy, infrastructure and delivery.
Are platform logs proof of adherence?
No. They may record connection or clicks without attention or correct participation.
Does it replace CONSORT?
No. It describes the intervention and should be used with the appropriate study-reporting guideline.
Does complete reporting prove equivalence to in-person care?
No. Equivalence requires suitable comparative evidence.

A cheerful final note
Precise English makes reporting with TIDieR-Telehealth more useful and more generous, not less. People can see how their evidence and values entered the work, where disagreement remains and what a responsible next step looks like.
