Bahasa Indonesia, Burmese and Thai are three distinct G3 language subjects in the 2027 Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), and their examination formats are very different. Bahasa Indonesia as a Third Language K367 has four papers—Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing—each worth 25%. Burmese K369 and Thai K374 each have one three-hour written paper worth 100%, combining Composition, Translation and Reading Comprehension.
For parents and private learners, this is a critical distinction. A student may speak Thai confidently but still need extensive written translation and comprehension practice because the K374 qualification does not contain a separately scored national oral paper. A student studying K367 Bahasa Indonesia needs all four communication skills, including live role play. Do not buy a generic ASEAN-language workbook or assume the same subject format applies across Southeast Asian languages.

Primary sources: the official 2027 SEAB syllabuses for K367 Bahasa Indonesia, . These are national examination formats, not rules for ordinary home or language-centre lessons.
1. Why three Southeast Asian languages have different exams
Learning any additional language can build awareness of culture and communication, but the precise national assessment is determined by its syllabus. K367 Bahasa Indonesia is explicitly a Third Language course and is designed around the ability to communicate across listening, speaking, reading and writing in familiar situations. Its syllabus describes an A2-level goal under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, with elements of B1.
K369 Burmese and K374 Thai have a different assessment design: a single extended written examination. The paper measures written composition, translation between the language and English, and reading comprehension. That is not a judgment that speaking either language has no value. It is a description of the evidence that this particular qualification collects.
The takeaway is that the same G3 label does not mean identical performance tasks. A parent researching an examination should confirm the subject name, code, candidate category and exact paper components before planning lessons.
2. K367 Bahasa Indonesia: Listening 25%, Reading 25%, Speaking 25%, Writing 25%
The K367 specification, whose first SEC examination year is 2027, divides the final grade equally across four papers. Unlike some older language formats where Written Papers appear first in the timetable, its published numbering is Paper 1 Listening, Paper 2 Reading, Paper 3 Speaking and Paper 4 Writing.
Listening lasts approximately 50 minutes and carries 40 raw marks. Candidates answer multiple-choice and matching questions from various recorded dialogues, announcements and exchanges. The syllabus states that each recording is heard twice, with thirty-seven listening questions in the specification. This can be practised using unfamiliar, age-appropriate recorded material, but repeated replay after marking should not be confused with success under the exam’s initial conditions.
Reading lasts one hour, 40 raw marks. It includes signs, messages, public notices, emails or similar familiar written materials and longer passages that require selecting or explaining relevant information. Students must read for meaning and notice exceptions rather than only matching words that look familiar.
Speaking: role play and two topic conversations
The K367 Speaking paper lasts approximately ten minutes, worth 40 raw marks. It includes a role play involving an everyday transactional situation and two topic conversations. The candidate should respond to the examiner’s actual prompts, express personal views or information when appropriate and maintain communication even when the next question differs from the one expected.
For example, an original practice scenario might involve a visitor asking for information about a public facility. A useful response identifies the request and gives a relevant answer. A student who has memorised a speech about travel but cannot respond to an enquiry about directions still needs functional conversation practice.
Writing: short form, directed response and extended response
K367 Paper 4 lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and is worth 45 raw marks. The tasks include form filling, directed writing of around 80–90 words and an extended writing choice of approximately 130–140 words. A learner might have to select what information belongs in a form, communicate facts to a recipient and develop a longer coherent message.
The longer choice may involve an email or letter, or an article or blog format. What matters is whether the candidate can respond to the prompt’s purpose, audience and content requirements. Writing more than requested does not automatically improve the result.
3. K369 Burmese and K374 Thai: one three-hour written paper
Both Burmese K369 and Thai K374 have one compulsory Paper 1 of three hours, 100 marks and 100% weighting. Its three sections are Composition 50 marks, Translation 30 marks and Reading Comprehension 20 marks. This structure is especially important for families whose learner is conversationally fluent but has had limited practice writing a formal extended response or translating precisely.
Composition requires two answers chosen from the available topics. Each should be approximately 150 words in the examined language. The prompts may allow the learner to express an opinion, communicate by letter, tell a story, describe an event or report dialogue. Two coherent answers are needed, not one long essay accompanied by an empty section.
Translation includes a passage from the examined language into English (10 marks), and another from English into the examined language (20 marks). This two-direction design tests different abilities. Understanding a Burmese or Thai sentence and paraphrasing it in English is not automatically the same as choosing accurate Burmese or Thai wording for a sentence originally written in English.
Reading Comprehension presents a passage in Burmese or Thai and asks questions that test the overall message and specific details. Candidates write answers in the examined language. A student who knows vocabulary but misses the speaker’s qualifications or the writer’s central point may select the wrong information.
4. Translation: why accurate relationships matter more than word substitution
Imagine an original English sentence: “The visitors may enter after ten, except when the building is being cleaned.” A superficial translation might capture visitors, enter and ten but omit the except condition. That changes the rule and therefore the meaning. Correct translation requires identifying how the clause operates before selecting the words that express it.
The same problem appears when translating from Burmese or Thai into English. A learner can produce an elegant English sentence that reads well but does not preserve the original speaker’s intended limitation, degree of certainty or sequence of events. The task is to communicate faithful meaning, not to manufacture a more impressive sentence.
To practise, start with one sentence containing a clear contrast, condition or cause. Ask the student to explain the meaning in their own words, translate it, then check whether the relationship survives. Change the original condition and see whether the translation changes accordingly. This is more transferable than memorising a model version of one favourite text.
5. Learning script and language structure without making the exam purely mechanical
Burmese and Thai use writing systems that may be unfamiliar to many English-dominant learners. A student who speaks the language at home may still need time to develop fluent reading and writing. The exam requires accurate written communication, so it is not enough to recognise a spoken answer. Conversely, a learner who can copy written symbols beautifully may not understand the passage’s meaning.
The useful learning connection is sound, written form, grammatical relationship and meaning. Practise common phrases in context, then ask what changes when the audience, time or condition changes. A reliable student can adapt a sentence rather than reproduce it only in a familiar exercise.
Likewise, Bahasa Indonesia has structures and vocabulary that may overlap with other regional languages, but partial familiarity is not proof that a student can complete the K367 listening, role-play and writing tasks. Avoid treating linguistic resemblance as guaranteed examination readiness.
6. Are dictionaries permitted?
All three official 2027 syllabuses explicitly prohibit dictionaries during assessment. A student may use dictionaries and legitimate learning resources during ordinary study, but those tools do not become permitted national examination materials simply because a teacher recommends them at home.
The distinction is useful in revision. For an unfamiliar word, the teacher can explain the meaning during learning mode and then revisit the word after a gap. For examination simulation, students should practise using context and existing vocabulary to interpret the text without dictionary access. If the learner cannot proceed without looking up nearly every word, the first priority is to build foundational vocabulary and sentence understanding.
7. Are these languages open to private candidates?
SEAB’s 2027 G3 private-candidate list includes Burmese K369 and Thai K374. The G3 school-candidate list includes all three—Bahasa Indonesia as a Third Language K367, Burmese K369 and Thai K374. However, the private-candidate list does not show K367.
Therefore, the presence of K367 on the school-candidate list must not be used to promise an independent private registration. A family should also not assume that the private availability of Burmese or Thai automatically settles age, number-of-subjects, exam-fee, venue or other eligibility questions. These belong to SEAB’s actual 2027 private-candidate registration rules, which are separate from the syllabus.
Before paying for a language course, ask whether it leads to an actual SEC entry, which candidate category it serves and how the subject code and examination conditions match the learner’s circumstances. If the language is being considered as an in-lieu Mother Tongue arrangement, seek the relevant MOE or school decision rather than inferring recognition from a national subject list.
8. Examination timing: November versus the general September language calendar
The K367, K369 and K374 syllabuses explicitly say that the examinations are available in November only. The SEC’s general schedule moves English and ordinary Mother Tongue written papers to September, but not every language qualification is governed by the same subject-specific timing. Exact paper dates must still be taken from the final 2027 SEAB timetable.
A student’s independent study plan should therefore have separate columns for the language course, national entry proof, oral/listening components where applicable and the formal examination date. One broad statement such as “language exams are in September” is not adequate for these subjects.
9. A two-week preparation routine matched to the actual paper
| Days | K367 Bahasa Indonesia | K369 Burmese / K374 Thai |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Confirm syllabus and four-paper weights | Confirm one-paper 50/30/20 structure |
| 3–4 | Practise understanding a short announcement | Write a short, coherent composition on a familiar topic |
| 5–6 | Read an unfamiliar notice or message | Translate a short passage, preserving conditions and tone |
| 7–8 | Respond to an everyday role-play prompt | Answer comprehension questions from a new passage |
| 9–10 | Write a directed 80–90-word response | Compare two short composition plans for different prompts |
| 11–12 | Attempt timed reading/listening sections | Attempt a timed combination of translation and comprehension |
| 13–14 | Recheck the weakest skill with changed material | Recheck the first error with a new text |
These are suggested learning exercises, not an official timetable or permission to share protected exam audio. The goal is to locate the learner’s first repeated mistake and repair it with accurate feedback.
