Islamic Religious Knowledge (Pengetahuan Agama Islam) is listed as G3 SEC subject K363 for 2027 on SEAB’s private-candidate syllabus list. It has two compulsory written papers, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 50%. Paper 1 covers Tauhid and Sirah; Paper 2 covers Akhlak and Fiqh. In each paper, candidates answer three questions—one from each of Sections A, B and C.
There is a significant post-secondary detail parents must notice: SEAB’s private-candidate listing specifically notes that Religious Knowledge cannot be used as one of the best-scoring subjects for aggregate score computation for JC and Millennia Institute admission. This does not mean the subject has no educational value or that it cannot appear on the candidate’s SEC record. It means families must distinguish subject certification from the rules governing a particular admissions aggregate.
SEC 2027 K363: examination structure
| Paper | Content | Time | Marks / weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Tauhid and Sirah | 1 hour 30 minutes | 50 marks, 50% |
| Paper 2 | Akhlak and Fiqh | 1 hour 30 minutes | 50 marks, 50% |
| Total | Four content strands across two papers | 3 hours total | 100 marks, 100% |
Each paper contains three sections. Section A is worth 20 marks, Section B 15 marks and Section C 15 marks. Each section presents two questions, of which candidates answer one. The candidate therefore answers three questions per paper and six across both papers.

1. What is Islamic Religious Knowledge assessing?
The syllabus identifies four broad learning outcomes: knowing foundational beliefs of Islam, understanding Islamic teachings and practices, demonstrating Islamic akhlak in daily life, and knowing Islamic history from before the advent of Islam through the Abbasid period. It assesses recall and presentation of key facts as well as understanding of why those matters are significant in Islamic teachings and Muslim life.
This means the subject is not solely a memorisation exercise. Candidates need to present accurate knowledge and show understanding of its significance. A response that lists terms without explaining the connection to the question may not demonstrate the required depth. At the same time, an answer should remain grounded in the prescribed syllabus and not drift into unrelated commentary.
2. The four syllabus strands
Tauhid
The Tauhid content includes the meaning of Tauhid and Iman; belief in Allah and the attributes that are wajib, mustahil and harus; belief in angels and their names and responsibilities; belief in Allah’s books; prophets and messengers; the Day of Resurrection; and Qadak and Qadar. The syllabus asks candidates to understand key concepts and relationships among them.
For effective study, students can organise each area with a clear definition, the required details, and an explanation of its importance in the syllabus context. The purpose is to make recall accurate and help the learner present a coherent answer rather than reproduce disconnected phrases.
Sirah
Sirah covers Islamic history from before the advent of Islam through the Abbasid period. Students should follow the syllabus topics, chronology and relevant people or events. A timeline can help organise events, but a timeline alone does not explain why an event is significant or how one development relates to another.
When writing an answer, distinguish sequence from cause. Saying that one event happened before another does not prove that the first caused the second. The student should use the syllabus knowledge to explain the relationship where the question asks for it.
Akhlak
Akhlak addresses Islamic moral conduct and its application in daily life. The assessment expects knowledge and understanding of the relevant teachings and their significance. Students can improve their answers by explaining the principle and then relating it accurately to the context given in the question, rather than offering a generic statement about being a good person.
Fiqh
Fiqh is the fourth strand in Paper 2. The syllabus content should be followed as written, with attention to the relevant teachings, practices and distinctions. A learner should organise their revision according to the official topic list and the question demands, keeping definitions, conditions and explanations accurate.
3. How to approach the six questions across two papers
Each paper is 90 minutes, and the candidate answers one question from each of three sections. This creates a clear selection decision: the learner should read both options in a section, identify which one they can answer accurately and then allocate time sensibly. Choosing a question solely because its wording looks familiar can be risky if the student does not know its required details.
A useful answer plan has three stages:
- Identify the demand: what exact concept, event, teaching or practice is the question asking about?
- Recall and organise: select the relevant syllabus knowledge and sequence it in a coherent order.
- Explain significance: where required, show why the information matters in the context of Islamic teachings and Muslim life.
Do not confuse a long answer with a complete answer. The response should match the command and mark allocation. A 20-mark answer needs enough accurate detail and explanation; a concise 15-mark response should still address the exact question rather than repeat a general introduction.
4. Important: K363 cannot be used in the JC/MI aggregate computation
SEAB’s 2027 G3 private-candidate subject page includes a note beside Islamic Religious Knowledge: Religious Knowledge cannot be used as one of the best-scoring subjects for aggregate score computation for JC and Millennia Institute admission. Parents who are planning a JC or MI route must not assume K363 can replace one of the subjects counted in that aggregate simply because it appears on the SEC subject list.
There are two separate questions:
- Can the candidate sit the subject and receive a result? That depends on the subject’s availability and the candidate’s eligibility under SEAB registration rules.
- Can the subject count towards a specific admissions aggregate? That depends on the admissions rules for the intended route and year. SEAB explicitly flags the K363 limitation for JC/MI aggregate computation.
This distinction avoids a costly planning error. If a student is targeting JC or MI, identify the actual aggregate subjects first, then treat Religious Knowledge as an additional subject rather than a replacement for a counted subject. For polytechnic, ITE or other routes, examine the receiving institution’s requirements independently; do not generalise the JC/MI limitation to every admissions pathway.
5. Is K363 a school-candidate or private-candidate subject?
SEAB lists Islamic Religious Knowledge K363 on its 2027 G3 private-candidate subject page, not as a standard Cambridge G3 school-candidate entry in the same way as subjects such as English or Biology. That means a parent should check the exact private-candidate route and eligibility before making plans. The existence of a syllabus PDF does not mean every secondary school offers the subject.
SEAB says private candidates register through the Candidates Portal if they meet the relevant eligibility criteria, such as age. The detailed 2027 registration procedure is published separately from the syllabus. Applicants should confirm current entry dates, eligibility, subject availability, fees, examination venue and any language or administrative requirements before paying a tuition provider or submitting an application.
The syllabus content is in Malay. Candidates and families should be comfortable using the official Malay document to understand topic scope and terminology. If the student needs help interpreting the syllabus, consult an appropriate teacher or language support, but keep the examination terminology accurate.
6. How to revise without reducing the subject to disconnected facts
For each topic, prepare a structured record with the concept or event, key facts, meaning, and significance. For Sirah, a timeline can help with sequence, followed by a short explanation of why each major development matters. For Tauhid, use a concept map to show the relationships among the required beliefs and terms. For Akhlak and Fiqh, link each syllabus concept to its actual teaching or practice, keeping the content accurate.
Use short recall sessions, then practise a question that asks for explanation. If the student can recite a definition but cannot show its relevance in a new prompt, the knowledge is not yet fully usable. Revisit the first missing link rather than merely copying the same paragraph again.
7. A two-week K363 study routine
| Phase | Focus | Evidence of learning |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | Confirm K363, candidate route and the two paper formats | Correct administrative and examination understanding |
| Days 3–4 | Organise Tauhid topics and key concepts | Can define and explain relationships accurately |
| Days 5–6 | Build a Sirah timeline from the official syllabus | Can explain significance, not just chronology |
| Days 7–8 | Review Akhlak and Fiqh content | Can connect teachings or practices to the question context |
| Days 9–10 | Attempt one question from each section under time constraints | Answers stay relevant and include required detail |
| Days 11–12 | Review errors and strengthen weak topics | Can correct errors without copying a model paragraph |
| Days 13–14 | Reattempt changed questions from both papers | Knowledge transfers to a new prompt |
