2027 SEC G3 Business or Principles of Accounts? A Private-Candidate Comparison

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

SEAB’s 2027 G3 SEC private-candidate directory lists Business as K344 and Principles of Accounts as K342. Business covers business functions and decision-making, while Principles of Accounts focuses on accounting concepts, records and financial statements. If you are choosing between the subjects, look at an actual syllabus task from each before deciding what you want to study.

Download the syllabus and linked specimen resources for both subjects. Compare the type of work expected and try a short task from each. Check any course-entry requirement separately if your choice is tied to a post-secondary application.

  • Match Business to K344 and Principles of Accounts to K342.
  • Check the syllabus and assessment scheme for each.
  • Try a short business case and an accounting task.
  • Note which skills you can practise regularly.
  • Verify your entry and any external requirement separately.

Compare what the work asks you to do

Business can ask you to apply ideas about functions such as marketing, operations or finance to a situation. In a practice case, identify what the business is trying to achieve, use the details provided and explain a decision or trade-off. Check the exact task against the current syllabus.

For Principles of Accounts, try tracing a simple transaction through the relevant records or interpreting a financial statement item. Ask what the figure represents and how it affects the record. When correcting a practice answer, locate the first step that created the difference. That makes it easier to decide whether to revisit a concept or practise the procedure.

Use the linked specimen resources

SEAB’s private directory links to Paper 1 and Paper 2 specimen materials and an insert for each of these subjects. Open the materials from the correct row. Check whether an insert belongs to the question you are attempting. Use the syllabus to understand the assessed format and any revision notes.

Try a short exercise without help and note how you spent your time. In Business you may need more practice selecting case evidence. In accounting you may need to build accuracy in recording transactions. Use that distinction to choose what to practise next, and consider which subject you can prepare for consistently.

Worked example

A candidate finds both subjects appealing. They attempt a Business question about a decision using the information in a case, then try an accounting exercise that requires checking a record. After reviewing both, they compare the full assessment schemes and the support they can access. They confirm the subject code and check the current registration instructions before finalising their plan.
