A-Level 2027 H2 Maths | Can You Reuse an Older Graphing Calculator?

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

You may be able to reuse an older graphing calculator for A-Level H2 Mathematics in 2027. Check the exact model and any listed operating-system conditions in SEAB’s approved-calculator document, including its previously approved section. The 2027 H2 Mathematics 9758 syllabus expects candidates to have access to an approved graphing calculator without a computer algebra system.

If you are borrowing a calculator from an older sibling or considering a used model, check the device before relying on it. The operating system, reset procedure, power supply and keys all deserve a look. Use the instructions issued for your 2027 examination to settle anything that is unclear.

  • Read the exact model name on the device.
  • Check the operating system against SEAB’s entry where versions are specified.
  • Confirm the device can be prepared using the required reset procedure.
  • Practise with it before choosing it as your examination calculator.

Read both parts of the approved list

Start with the graphing-calculator section. SEAB lists currently approved models with operating-system versions where applicable and includes a section for previously approved models. Its notes explain how previously approved models can remain usable unless approval is withdrawn after a change in policy, syllabus or examination format.

Model names that share a prefix can still be different. Compare the full model identifier and the installed operating system where relevant. If the device has been updated since it was last used for an examination, check the installed version again. Ask your school or SEAB if you cannot match the device and its conditions to the current list.

Treat the reset as part of preparation

SEAB’s published calculator document calls for graphing calculators to be reset before an examination. Check how your school or examination centre wants you to do this. Practise finding the settings you need after a reset, using the device as it will be prepared for the paper. Keep stored formulas, notes and programs out of the examination device in line with the rules.

Worked example | The listing says only “TI-84”

Mira is offered a used calculator described only as “TI-84”. She asks for the full model name and the operating-system version before deciding. She opens SEAB’s current list and checks the exact entry, including the previously approved section if needed. That gives her a more reliable basis than the seller’s description.

Once the school confirms what applies, Mira tests the keys and power. She practises drawing a graph, finding an intersection and changing the window. She also checks how to return to the settings she needs after the required reset.

CHAPTER 3 OF 4 · Back to contents

Practise what you will put on paper

Imagine a revision question asks you to use a graph to solve an equation on a given interval. First write the functions you are comparing. Check that the graphing window covers the interval and that you have found all relevant intersections. Sketch the graphs when you use them to find the solution, as the syllabus directs, and state the answers at the accuracy the question requires.

For a question that requires mathematical working, give the steps in mathematical notation. The syllabus allows unsupported calculator answers as a general rule where the question permits them. Read the wording of each task before deciding how much working to show.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy a new calculator for 2027?

First check the exact device you have against SEAB’s list and the current paper instructions. An older device in good working order may still meet the requirements.

Does a model on the list settle the operating-system question?

Read the full entry, including any specified versions or other conditions. If your version is unclear, ask before relying on the device.

Where can I check?

Use the SEAB approved-calculator page and the 2027 H2 Mathematics 9758 syllabus. The 2027 school-candidate syllabus index links to the official subject materials.
