What Temperature Should Your Fridge Be in Singapore? | Chiller and Freezer Settings

Set your refrigerator to keep food at 4°C or below and your freezer at −18°C or below, following the Singapore Food Agency’s household guidance. If the appliance uses a numbered dial or you are unsure about the display, use a fridge or freezer thermometer to check the actual temperature.

Keep cooked and ready-to-eat food above raw meat, poultry and seafood. Put raw food in a sealed or covered container that catches drips. Leave room for cold air to circulate and return cold items promptly after use.

  • Check the actual temperature rather than relying on a dial number.
  • Keep the refrigerator at 4°C or below and the freezer at −18°C or below.
  • Store raw meat below cooked and ready-to-eat food.
  • Follow the label or official guidance if a product needs a particular storage condition.

Check the fridge and freezer separately

SFA lists a household fridge or chiller temperature of 4°C or below and a freezer temperature of −18°C or below. It identifies 5°C to 60°C as the range in which bacteria grow most rapidly. A working fridge slows bacterial growth. Food still needs safe handling and suitable storage times. SFA’s home food safety guidance

Measure instead of guessing from the dial

A dial may show numbers that represent settings rather than degrees. Read the appliance manual to see how it works. Place a suitable thermometer according to its instructions and let the reading stabilise before deciding whether to adjust the setting. If you are concerned about one shelf, check the temperature in the area where the food is actually kept.

Opening the door repeatedly lets warm air in. A very full fridge can also block air circulation. Leave space around items and allow the temperature to settle after adjusting the controls. If the appliance stays too warm, arrange to have it checked and use another reliably cold appliance for perishables if available.

Arrange food by what can leak or be eaten directly

Keep ready-to-eat food and cooked dishes on shelves above raw meat, seafood or poultry. Use containers that stop raw juices from dripping. Put cut fruit into a clean covered container and refrigerate it promptly. Keep cooked leftovers where you can see them and follow storage guidance for the particular food.

Use a separate plan for cooked rice

Rice needs prompt cooling and safe cold storage even if the fridge is working properly. Divide the portions you intend to save and follow rice-specific guidance. A cold fridge cannot make up for rice that spent hours at room temperature. How to cool, store and reheat cooked rice

Section 4 of 5

Act if the fridge has been too warm

Check what you know about the length of time and the temperature. A reading after the fridge has recovered cannot tell you what happened earlier. Follow SFA or product-specific instructions for food whose cold storage may have been interrupted. If you cannot establish safe handling for a perishable food, discard it rather than tasting it to check.

For prevention, make it easy to see what is in the fridge and avoid packing food tightly against vents. Keep a thermometer where you can check it easily. A weekly check can also help you see which containers need to be used and which foods are nearing the end of their stated storage period.

Common fridge and freezer questions

Is a number on the dial the temperature?

Check the manual. On many appliances the number is a setting. A thermometer measures the temperature.

Can a freezer fix food that was left out?

Freezing slows or stops growth while food is frozen. It does not undo unsafe handling that occurred beforehand.

Can I thaw chicken in the fridge?

Yes. Keep it contained on a low shelf and follow safe thawing and cooking guidance.

Do date marks still matter in a cold fridge?

Yes. Follow the date and storage instructions together, including any shorter limit after opening.
