Can You Wear a Jacket to a GCE Exam? | SEAB Attire and Outerwear Rules

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

SEAB’s 2026 secondary GCE rules allow for candidates wearing outerwear such as a jacket, cardigan, windbreaker or sweater, provided it contains no unauthorised materials or devices. Examination staff may ask you to remove outerwear for checks before or during the exam.

School candidates should wear appropriate attire approved by their school. The booklet says full uniform is not required under that rule. Private candidates should wear attire appropriate for a school environment.

  • Check the attire instructions for your candidate type.
  • Empty outerwear pockets of unauthorised items.
  • Follow staff instructions if asked to remove a layer.
  • Check the rules for the examination year you are sitting.

Prepare the jacket before you leave

Check every pocket and any compartments. Remove notes, earbuds and other unauthorised items before entering the examination area. For example, a jacket worn on the commute can still contain a receipt or notes from earlier in the day. Check it while packing your exam materials.

For guidance on devices, see the GCE device rules guide.

Follow the school or centre’s instructions

If you are a school candidate, ask what attire your school approves for the sitting. If you are a private candidate, use the venue and examination instructions. If staff ask you to remove an outer layer for checking, follow their directions.
