If you want to enter a GCE Science subject with a laboratory-based component as a private candidate, check whether you have previously sat the same Science subject. SEAB says candidates who have not done so need to complete a course of instruction in Science practical at an institute or school before the practical examination date.
Start with the exact examination level, subject and code. Check the current registration information and syllabus for your intended sitting. A previous Science subject with a similar name may need clarification before you rely on it for entry.
- Find the exact Science subject and check whether it has a laboratory-based component.
- Check whether your previous sitting was for the same subject.
- If a practical course is required, check that you can complete it in time.
- Confirm any evidence and entry conditions with the official candidate route.
Find the prerequisite before you register
Use the private-candidate list and registration information for the examination year. Open the syllabus and identify the practical component. If you have previously sat the subject, locate the result or examination details you can use to identify it accurately.
If your previous subject title or code differs from the intended entry, ask SEAB whether it counts as the same subject for this purpose. Provide the two codes and examination years. Check early enough to arrange a course if the previous sitting does not satisfy the condition.
Self-study is an option for preparing for GCE examinations as a private candidate. The laboratory-based subject condition is separate. Plan for the practical requirement alongside your written preparation.

Plan the course if you need one
Ask the institute or school whether it provides instruction for the practical component of the exact Science subject. Check the dates and whether you can finish before the practical examination. Ask what evidence of completion the provider gives and confirm SEAB’s requirements for your examination year.
For example, a candidate who has studied theory independently but has never sat the intended Science subject should confirm the course requirement before choosing an entry. They should check when the final session takes place and leave room to resolve a schedule change.
Keep any completion record and the examination details together. If a provider advertises preparation for several subjects, verify that its course covers the one you intend to enter.

Keep eligibility separate from reporting
After entry, check the actual practical schedule and centre. The schedule is a different document from the information you used to establish your eligibility. Use the Science Practical reporting guide for the email, assigned venue and reporting-time checks.
If your intended exam is SEC, check the syllabus and candidate instructions for that year before assuming the published GCE prerequisite is carried over.
