Why Is a Subject Missing From My O-Level Certificate? Check the Result Slip First

Three learners review open books together at a classroom table, with stacks of textbooks, stationery and a whiteboard in the bright room.

If a subject appears on your Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level result slip but is missing from the examination certificate, check its grade on the slip. SEAB says the result slip shows performance for all registered subjects. Subjects below the certificate’s minimum grade or marked Absent are omitted from the certificate.

For O-Level, SEAB lists grade 6 or better as the certificate threshold. A C6 can therefore appear on the certificate while a D7 can appear on the result slip and be omitted from the certificate. Use both documents when checking a missing subject.

  • Match the name, qualification and examination year on both documents.
  • Find the subject on the result slip and check the exact grade or status.
  • Check the certificate threshold for your own examination level.
  • Ask your school or SEAB if the documents still appear inconsistent.

Read the two documents side by side

The result slip shows how you were recorded for the registered subjects. The certificate records the subjects eligible for inclusion under the qualification rules. For a student with several results, the two documents may therefore show different lists even when the records are correct.

SEAB’s published thresholds differ by examination. The N(A)-Level threshold is grade 5 or better, and the N(T)-Level threshold is grade D or better. O-Level uses grade 6 or better. Use the specific rule for the qualification printed on your document.

Read the full symbol or grade

An O-Level D7 is a subject grade. Absent is a result status. Look at the wording shown on the slip and read the explanatory notes for your exam. If the slip shows an unexpected absence or a missing result that you expected to see, tell your school or SEAB promptly and have the subject and examination details ready.

Worked example | C6, D7 and Absent on one result slip

An illustrative candidate’s O-Level slip records English B4, Mathematics C6, Chemistry D7 and Art as Absent. Applying SEAB’s published certificate rule to those example entries, English and Mathematics meet the grade threshold. Chemistry is below it and Art is marked Absent, so those two entries would be omitted from the certificate.

If the same candidate looks only at the certificate, there is no line explaining the grade in Chemistry. The result slip provides that detail. If Mathematics C6 were unexpectedly missing as well, the student could contact the school or SEAB and point to the exact line on the slip.

Keep certificate rules separate from course requirements

A certificate inclusion threshold tells you which subjects appear on the document. A course may use its own minimum subject grades and aggregate rules. If you are applying for a place, check the entry requirements for the course and intake, and use the result documents the institution requests.

If a deadline is near and a discrepancy is still being checked, ask the receiving institution what to submit in the meantime. The school or SEAB can tell you which enquiry process applies to the examination record.

Frequently asked questions

Does an omitted subject mean I never registered for it?

Check the result slip for the registered subjects and their outcomes. A subject can be omitted from the certificate because its grade is below the threshold or because it is recorded as Absent.

What if I sat the paper but the slip says Absent?

Contact the school or SEAB promptly with the examination year, subject and paper details. Explain what you believe differs from the record and ask about the applicable procedure.

Does this rule apply to the 2027 SEC?

Use the SEC qualification and certificate rules for SEC results. This guide explains how the GCE O-Level result slip and certificate differ.

Where can I read the official explanation?

See SEAB’s FAQ on grades shown on GCE certificates, its FAQ on absent subjects and the O-Level explanatory notes.
