If you return for Secondary 5 in 2027 and plan to apply for a polytechnic diploma, check the Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise (Poly EAE) instructions for the 2028 intake. MOE has confirmed that Poly EAE continues alongside the new Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE). Eligible Secondary 5 students taking the national examination in 2027 sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC).
Poly EAE assesses your interest and aptitude for a particular diploma and can lead to a conditional offer. The official 2028 instructions govern your eligibility, application dates and the academic conditions you must meet. You can start now by identifying a diploma you would accept and gathering evidence of work you can explain.
- Search for the 2028 intake instructions, even though you plan to apply during 2027.
- Check the exact diploma and its subject requirements with your Secondary 5 subject list.
- Choose one or two examples that show how you approached relevant work.
- Read the offer, acceptance and withdrawal conditions before committing.
- Keep preparing for SEC and record a separate results-day plan.

Match your school year to the intake
Your examination year is 2027
If you are in the transition cohort that took N(A)-Levels in 2026 and returns for Secondary 5, your 2027 school year leads to SEC. Ask your teacher or Education and Career Guidance counsellor which subjects and levels your school expects you to take. Compare that list with the diploma’s published requirements as soon as the relevant intake materials are available.
Your proposed polytechnic intake is 2028
When reading an EAE page, find its intake label first. A timetable headed AY2027 can describe applications made in 2026 by O-Level students. Use it to understand the kinds of stages an earlier exercise had. For your dates, eligibility category and results conditions, use instructions for AY2028.
A useful calendar has one row for the early application and another for the results-based exercise. Write the official opening, closing and offer dates as they are announced. Add the published dates for school exams and SEC components so that you can see where the workload falls.

Worked example | Show your process in one project
Hafiz is in Secondary 5 and wants to explore an engineering diploma. He has a small project from school in which he tested different arrangements for a model bridge. His evidence consists of a diagram, a table of observations and a revised model. The first design performed poorly at a particular joint, and he can explain the change he made after seeing that result.
He reads the diploma’s first-year module descriptions and picks one that connects to his project. Then he prepares a short account with four parts. What was the problem? What did he try? What did the test show? What would he improve next? He saves his original work so that he can answer questions about his own contribution.
A second example can come from ordinary schoolwork
If a student is applying for a media course, a class video with a clear editing decision can be more informative than a long list of unrelated awards. A student interested in business might explain how they tracked costs for a school event and why they changed a purchasing decision. The evidence should match the course and accurately describe what the student did.
Make a little time to practise explaining it
Ask a friend to listen to the story and then ask one follow-up question. Practise explaining a difficulty, an imperfect result or an idea you abandoned. An interview can give you room to show how you think through a problem. Use the polytechnic’s specific instructions if it asks for a portfolio, test, audition or other selection step.

Read a conditional offer as a set of decisions
First, confirm the course name and institution. Then copy the academic requirements and dates into a calendar. Ask the polytechnic or your school what happens if you accept, if you withdraw within the permitted window, or if your final results do not meet the conditions. Check how those outcomes affect your participation in the 2028 PSE before choosing.
Keep a separate study sheet for your SEC papers. If the diploma needs a particular English or Mathematics result, ask your teacher what improvement would most help that subject. Early admission gives you another application route while the academic conditions continue to matter.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my 2026 N(A)-Level results alone to confirm an offer?
Follow the 2028 offer’s stated qualification and grade requirements. Ask how earlier results are handled if you have a mixed record. Your school can help you bring the exact subject details to the polytechnic.
Can I apply to a diploma just to keep it as a backup?
Read the commitment and withdrawal rules and consider whether you would actually accept the course. If your interests are still changing, speak to your school about the timing and consequences of accepting an early offer.
What if I have no formal portfolio?
Check what the particular course asks for. A small project, school assignment, relevant activity or personal experiment can show how you learn if you can explain the work and its connection to the course.
Where can I verify this?
Start with MOE’s announcement that Poly EAE continues, the official Poly EAE portal and CHIJ Katong Convent’s explanation of the Secondary 5 transition. For dates and conditions, look for the AY2028 release and your own diploma’s instructions.
