If you need to pause your polytechnic diploma, ask the institution about formal course deferment and what applies while the request is being considered. Confirm when an approved pause would start, how you would return and which current classes or assessments still require action. If you hold a Student’s Pass, check the effect of the proposed break with the institution and ICA before planning travel or a stay in Singapore.
Singapore Polytechnic’s student handbook distinguishes leave from individual classes or assessments from the application process for course deferment or withdrawal. Use your own institution’s current instructions to choose the procedure. A short absence, a pause in studies and ending enrolment have different practical consequences.
- Explain the length of break you expect to need.
- Ask which form and supporting evidence the institution requires.
- Check the current attendance and assessment instructions.
- Confirm return conditions, fees and any immigration steps.
- Save the approved dates and the contact for returning.
Choose the procedure for the break you need
Write down when the difficulty began, the earliest date you can resume and which classes or assessments are affected. Ask the student services office whether the situation calls for short-term leave, course deferment or another procedure. If the timing is uncertain, explain what you know and when you can provide an update.
Ask how and when to submit documents. Share sensitive information only through the specified channel. If an assessment is approaching, mention its date and ask separately what to do about it. The decision on the semester and the instructions for a particular assessment may arrive at different times.

Check what applies while the request is pending
Continue to follow the institution’s instructions for attendance, assessments and payments until it confirms a change. Ask what you should do if you cannot attend in the meantime. Check whether a separate absence request or notification is needed. Save replies and keep a short calendar so you can see which deadlines are still active.
If a bill comes due, ask the finance office how it will handle the period in question and whether the decision affects any amount already paid. If you receive Tuition Grant support, ask how the break and return could affect the course and subsidy record. Request the information for your actual intake and study plan.

Put the return plan and Student’s Pass on separate lines
Ask when you would return, whether any re-enrolment step is required and whether course sequencing affects which modules you can take first. Record the expected term and a date to reconfirm it. Ask whether there is anything you should keep or complete before the break, such as retaining access to relevant study records.
If you hold a Student’s Pass, give the school and ICA the proposed deferment dates, your pass validity and any travel plans. Ask what status applies during the pause and what steps will be needed before resuming. Obtain instructions for your case before relying on the date printed on an existing pass or on a provisional return date.

Worked example
A student has an upcoming assessment and may need to pause for a term. They contact student services with the assessment date and the likely length of absence. The institution tells them which immediate attendance steps apply and how to request formal deferment. The student keeps the two instructions together and follows both.
The family asks for the likely return term and checks whether the break affects the Student’s Pass. Once the institution confirms the dates, they record whom to contact before returning and when to check the module plan. That gives the student a clear route back without requiring a decision about every future module immediately.

Frequently asked questions
Is reporting an absence the same as deferring a course?
Ask which procedure applies. Singapore Polytechnic’s handbook lists separate processes for leave from classes or assessments and course deferment or withdrawal.
Can I assume my Student’s Pass remains usable for the full break?
Confirm your individual situation with the institution and ICA. Give the proposed dates and the current pass details.
What if the date I can return changes?
Contact the institution early. Explain the new date and ask what effect it may have on the approved arrangement, fees and return process.
