SEAB says it cannot reschedule GCE examination papers for individual candidates. For certain GCE language oral papers held over several days, candidates may request a change within that subject’s oral examination window for the year.
Start by identifying the exact component. A request for another oral slot, an unexpected absence and a formal change to your subject entry follow separate procedures. If you already have an assigned appointment, follow it unless the responsible examination authority confirms a change.
- Match the exam year, subject and component to your instructions.
- For eligible oral papers, check the oral window and use SEAB’s request route.
- Keep the original appointment until a change is confirmed.
- Report illness or unexpected absence through the appropriate candidate route.
Why written papers follow the published timetable
GCE timetables are planned around teaching, assessment and results processing. SEAB says that, apart from the GCE Mother Tongue written examinations it identifies in its FAQ, papers are generally conducted once in the fixed examination period. That timetable structure does not create an individual right to move a sitting.
If a private candidate spots a clash before registering, check the published dates and the exact subject entry. If the candidate has already registered, ask SEAB whether a subject amendment or withdrawal applies and check the deadline. See the GCE private-candidate withdrawal guide for the distinction between those actions.
If the apparent conflict involves two registered examinations, check both codes and your personalised instructions. Contact the school or SEAB promptly if the conflict remains. The official contact can tell you which instructions apply.

When a language oral slot can be requested
SEAB’s GCE FAQ describes certain language oral examinations that are held across multiple days. Candidates can apply for rescheduling within that subject’s oral examination window for the year using SEAB’s online form. Verify the applicable subject, dates and procedure before relying on this option.
Prepare the subject and paper code, the original appointment and the reason for requesting a change. Check any evidence requested by the official form. Save the acknowledgement and look for a confirmed decision.
Suppose a student has a conflict with an assigned oral appointment. The family first checks that the paper is one of the eligible oral components. They use the official request route and keep the original reporting details in the calendar until they have a confirmed alternative.

If the problem arises suddenly
If illness or another unexpected circumstance affects a GCE paper, contact the school, centre or SEAB promptly and explain what happened. Ask which procedure applies and what evidence is required. For cases involving a missed or affected paper, see the GCE special consideration guide.
SEAB’s FAQ says missing one or more papers without valid reasons approved by SEAB can result in an Absent grade for the subject. Keep records of the instructions you receive and check arrangements for any remaining papers.
