SEC 2027 G1 Elements of Business Skills K129 | How to Keep a Coursework Evidence Log

For SEC G1 Elements of Business Skills K129 Paper 2, keep a short record of each observation and the task it can help answer. The 2027 syllabus describes Paper 2 as a business investigation. SEAB’s specimen instructions place the work in supervised sessions and direct students to hand their gathered material and answers to their teacher for safekeeping at the end of each session.

Set up the record during the time and in the format your school allows. A useful entry shows what you found, where it came from and why it matters. This makes it easier to turn a pile of information into a recommendation supported by evidence.

  • Write the observation in plain language.
  • Record where you found it and when, if relevant.
  • Link it to a coursework task or question.
  • Follow the school’s instructions for storing and submitting work.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4 · Back to contents

Keep observation and interpretation apart

An observation describes what you found. An interpretation explains what it might mean for the business. For example, “the opening hours appear beside the entrance” is an observation. “Customers can check the hours before queuing” is an interpretation. The second sentence is easier to justify when the first is precise.

Keep an uncertainty beside the entry if you have one. A single visit may show a queue on that day, but it cannot establish how long customers usually wait. That matters if your recommendation depends on the queue being a regular problem.

Worked example | A fictional retail counter

A student investigating a fictional stationery shop notices that several customers ask whether a promotion applies to individual pens or only to multipacks. The student records the wording of the display in the exercise and links the observation to a customer-information task.

One possible recommendation is to state the eligible pack size directly on the sign. The student can explain how that change addresses the question customers were asking. If they only observed one short period, they can keep the claim specific to the evidence they have.

Use the log at the end of a session

Before handing work to your teacher, check which entry supports which part of your response. If a recommendation has no supporting entry, flag it for your next permitted work session. When you prepare the final PDF as directed, check that the task labels and supporting evidence are readable. Follow the school’s instructions on permitted materials, timing and submission.
