If your child has approved Leave of Absence (LOA) from a Singapore school and your overseas plans change, contact the school holding the place. Give the original dates, the new dates and whether they are firm. For an early return, ask the school to confirm when and how your child can resume attendance. For a longer stay, ask what update or renewal is required and by when.
Keep three dates separate: when you arrive in Singapore, when your child can attend and when the current approval ends. MOE’s published application form treats leave as a calendar-year arrangement and provides for reapplication by November for the following year. Use the school’s current instructions for your situation, particularly if the new plan crosses into a new calendar year or your child is approaching the end of their school stage.
- Find the existing approval and the school contact who handles it.
- Tell the school what changed and what remains uncertain.
- Ask how the revised dates affect the leave, the place and attendance.
- Plan a school handover using the actual first day once the school confirms it.
- Update overseas contact details so renewal and return messages reach you.
Start with the approval you already have
Read the current leave approval and note the covered dates, the school and the contact you last used. If your family has sent several renewal applications, work from the latest approved period. You may have a travel itinerary that has changed twice while the school has a single set of dates. The useful opening sentence is “Our approved period is [dates], and we now expect [change].”
The LOA scheme can let a student remain registered with the school while abroad, with re-admission to that school on return when leave was granted under the scheme. The school is therefore the practical starting point for reconfirming the return arrangements. If your child never received approval or the leave already lapsed, say that plainly and ask the school which procedure applies to your situation.
Describe the school day you can actually make
A family may land on a Sunday, have access to their home on Monday and be ready for a school day later in the week. Give the school the dates as they actually stand. If your employer expects a relocation but has yet to confirm a flight, say the date is provisional and ask when the school needs a firm update.
You can send one initial message now and confirm the travel date later. This is particularly helpful if a term, assessment period or year-end renewal is approaching. A child returning close to an assessment needs clarity about the first day and whom to meet, and the school needs time to coordinate those details.

If your child is coming back earlier
Confirm rejoining before making first-day arrangements
Ask when your child can resume attendance, which level and class to prepare for, and whom to contact on arrival. If the return falls between terms or during a holiday, ask when you should expect the school to confirm its arrangements. Before buying materials, check the current booklist and what your child needs immediately.
If your child is entering a different stage of schooling by the time of return, flag it in the first message. For example, a family that left during primary school may now be asking about an age and schooling history that brings secondary placement into the conversation. Give the school the last Singapore level and the child’s overseas schooling dates. Ask whether it can handle the return itself or whether you should use a separate admission route.
Collect a short academic and support handover
Ask the overseas school what reports, work samples or attendance records it can provide. Keep a short note on the curriculum your child has been following, the languages used and any practical learning support that has helped. Use the Singapore school’s instructions on what it needs and how to send it.
A few examples can be more informative than a long list of textbook titles. A parent might mention that the child can solve familiar fractions confidently but has not used the Singapore school’s preferred model method. Or the child may know a concept in one language and need time to recognise its classroom vocabulary in another. Let the teacher decide what to check next.

If your family will stay abroad longer
Confirm whether you need an update, a renewal or both
Explain the expected extension and ask which period needs approval. The MOE form states that renewal for the following year is made by November and gives instructions on corresponding fees. Confirm the deadline, fee and evidence directly with your school. Keep the school’s acknowledgement and the later approval where the parent responsible for renewal can find them.
A change within the already approved year and a stay that extends into the following year can raise different questions. Ask about both when they apply. If the employer’s confirmation will arrive after a school deadline, say so early and ask what the school can accept in the meantime.
Update the details the school uses to reach you
The official form asks for overseas correspondence information and says changes should be communicated promptly. Confirm that the school has a current address and usable contact. If the family is changing cities or time zones, give a suitable calling window in Singapore time when useful.
Ask about Student Learning Space access if you plan to use it to stay familiar with parts of the Singapore curriculum. The LOA form includes a field to request access. Find out what the school can provide and how your child can sign in from abroad. Keep the overseas school’s own learning plan in view so any extra practice has a clear purpose.

Two worked examples
A return moves forward by one school term
A family had expected to return at year-end, but a parent’s overseas work ends earlier. They locate their approval and email the school with the revised arrival date and the first date their child is available. They ask the school to confirm attendance, reporting instructions and whether it wants recent overseas reports.
The child finishes a project at the overseas school and brings one example of recent work. The family plans the first journey and a quiet evening before the first day. They wait for the school’s actual instructions before assuming which books, timetable or class will apply.
The overseas posting continues into the next year
Another parent hears in October that the overseas posting is likely to continue. The employer has yet to issue a final letter. The parent contacts the school immediately, explains the expected dates and asks what the school needs by its renewal deadline. When the employer confirms the extension, the parent supplies the requested material through the agreed channel.
The family puts a reminder in the calendar for the school’s response and keeps an updated phone number on record. They also make a separate note of their child’s current school stage so they can raise any transition question before the eventual return.

A message you can adapt
“Hello, my child has approved Leave of Absence from [school] for [period]. Our overseas plans have changed and we now expect [revised dates]. The dates are [confirmed/provisional]. Could you tell us how to update the school, whether any renewal or documents are required, and how to confirm our child’s return to attendance if applicable?”
If a date is close, add the date in the opening sentence. Ask about documents and fees through the official school contact and share only the information it requests.

Frequently asked questions
Can my child report on the first day after arriving?
Ask the school for the confirmed reporting date and where the child should go. Give the first date the child is available. If you arrive during a holiday, ask when the school can confirm the return arrangements.
Does an extension of the employer’s posting extend the school’s approval?
Ask the school what update or renewal it requires and track its approval separately. An employer’s timetable helps explain the change, while the school communicates the education arrangements.
What if I missed the renewal date?
Contact the school holding the place promptly. Give the last approved dates, explain what happened and ask it to confirm the current status and next available step. Plan from its reply.
Can a sibling use the same approval?
Ask the relevant school about each child’s own enrolment and approval. Siblings can have different schools, stages and return arrangements even when their travel dates are identical.
