WHY ENGLISH?
Turn a list of requirements into a visible evidence chain from original need through design, verification, results and change
A requirements traceability matrix, or RTM, connects requirements with their sources, designs, implementations, verification methods, test evidence, results and changes. English matters because every link must preserve the meaning of the requirement instead of creating the appearance of coverage through matching numbers.
NASA’s Systems Engineering Handbook appendix on the Requirements Verification Matrix says each “shall” requirement should have a unique identifier and a definitive source, and that the matrix should define how requirements are verified. Its validation guidance separately connects needs, goals, rationale, architecture, plans and stakeholder evaluation.
This guide uses a fictional accessible booking service. It teaches a practical traceability method, not a universal NASA form or proof of system safety. English makes missing, changed and failed links visible; engineering judgement, verification quality and authorised acceptance remain essential.

ORIENTATION
What this guide covers
Current fact check
Checked on 8 November 2026, NASA’s Systems Engineering Handbook appendix said requirements verification matrices should identify each “shall” requirement by unique identifier, give the definitive source and define how all requirements are verified. The companion validation appendix distinguished validation activities that ensure customer or sponsor satisfaction from requirement verification.
What this guide does not cover
This article owns the requirements traceability matrix across need, requirement, design, verification and result. It does not own the product requirements document, user story, software test case, architecture decision record, test plan, defect log, configuration-management system or safety case.
Worked example
Every chapter returns to a fictional accessible equipment-booking service with requirements for eligibility, keyboard operation, booking confirmation, duplicate prevention, audit logging and recovery. It is fictional, low-stakes and educational; it does not report a real school, clinical decision or guaranteed outcome.
Did You Know? For a requirements traceability matrix, precise writing makes appraisal possible but does not perform the appraisal, remove bias or guarantee transfer.
Warm up with eduKate’s guides to explaining scientific evidence and asking better questions in class.
CHAPTER 1 OF 16
1. Define the Purpose and Boundary of the Matrix
Why this move matters
State which requirement sets, lifecycle stages, products and decisions the matrix supports.
Did You Know? Traceability has a purpose such as coverage, impact analysis or assurance.
Trace one requirement end to end
State which requirement sets, lifecycle stages, products and decisions the matrix supports. Give the requirement a stable identifier and connect its source, rationale, design, implementation, verification method, result and change history.
Use the worked matrix as a reasoning test
In the fictional system, The matrix covers approved service and accessibility requirements through acceptance testing. A reviewer should be able to move in both directions—from need to evidence and from a failed result back to the affected requirement.
Expose gaps without pretending the matrix is proof
Mark missing links, obsolete versions, deferred checks and ambiguous ownership. Coverage becomes discussable only when blanks remain visible.
Keep the matrix governed and usable
A matrix outside its stated boundary should not be treated as complete. Define ownership, update triggers, approved states and review cadence so traceability follows the project rather than becoming a one-off spreadsheet.
Practical reader check
- Point to the exact source or method sentence supporting the claim.
- Name the person, setting, date, input and decision rule that could change its meaning.
- Label the remaining uncertainty reported, inferred, contested or unknown.
Student, parent and career transfer
Make one evidence card for “Define the Purpose and Boundary of the Matrix”: source location, plain-language meaning, limit and next question. A parent or teacher can ask for one everyday explanation and one specialist explanation; both must preserve the same conditions. This habit supports systems engineering, software development, testing, business analysis, quality assurance, regulated projects, procurement, school computing and product delivery without promising a grade, admission, funding decision or job.
CHAPTER 2 OF 16
2. Give Every Controlled Requirement a Stable Unique ID
Why this move matters
Use identifiers that survive wording changes and are not reused after retirement.
Did You Know? Stable identity makes history and links possible.
Trace one requirement end to end
Use identifiers that survive wording changes and are not reused after retirement. Give the requirement a stable identifier and connect its source, rationale, design, implementation, verification method, result and change history.
Use the worked matrix as a reasoning test
In the fictional system, Booking eligibility is REQ-FUN-014 even after a clarification changes its wording.
An ID identifies a record; it does not explain the requirement. Define ownership, update triggers, approved states and review cadence so traceability follows the project rather than becoming a one-off spreadsheet.
Practical reader check
- Point to the exact source or method sentence supporting the claim.
- Name the person, setting, date, input and decision rule that could change its meaning.

PRACTICE LAB
Build a requirements traceability matrix decision trail
Student route
- Choose one original report inside this guide’s scope.
- Copy its objective and underline actor, action, context, evidence and intended decision.
- Draw the specific reasoning chain used in this article.
- Mark each step reported, inferred, contested or unknown.
- Rewrite the conclusion so it preserves the narrowest important limitation.
Parent or teacher route
Ask the learner to explain turn a list of requirements into a visible evidence chain from original need through design, verification, results and change twice: once to a classmate and once to a method specialist. Praise a precise correction and a well-stated unknown; both show disciplined attention to evidence.
Early-career route
Create a one-page requirements traceability matrix audit with source link, date checked, scope, method logic, decisive wording, contrary evidence, limit and next action. A colleague should be able to continue without guessing.
Decision rule
If a shorter explanation removes the condition that made the original claim true, it is not clearer yet. Restore the condition.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions students and parents often ask
Is an RTM only for software projects?
No. Traceability is useful wherever requirements connect to designs, products, verification and decisions.
Must every requirement use the word shall?
Follow the governing standard. NASA’s example matrix focuses on controlled “shall” requirements.
Does one hundred per cent coverage prove quality?
No. Links and tests can be weak, outdated or misaligned.
What is bidirectional traceability?
A reviewer can move from requirement to evidence and from evidence or change back to affected requirements.
Should validation be in the same matrix?
It may be linked or separated depending on the method, but do not confuse stakeholder validation with requirement verification.
Who owns the matrix?
Assign a controlled owner and update responsibilities across requirements, engineering, testing and configuration roles.

A cheerful final note
Precise English makes a requirements traceability matrix more useful and more honest, while leaving room for other languages and local knowledge. People can see how their evidence and values entered the work, where disagreement remains and what a responsible next step looks like.
