Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad Collection | What to See at the National Orchid Garden

Singapore Botanic Gardens sign at Bukit Timah Gate, beside the entrance plaza.

The Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad Collection is one of the display houses in the National Orchid Garden at Singapore Botanic Gardens. NParks highlights Ananas, Neoregelia and Guzmania. Use the National Orchid Garden map to find the collection within the Tropical Montane Orchidetum.

The collection is inside the ticketed orchid garden. Check its current admission and last entry before travelling, then allow time to walk from the orchid garden entrance to the display. The featured photo shows Bukit Timah Gate, an entrance to the wider Gardens.

  • Part of the Tropical Montane Orchidetum.
  • Inside the ticketed National Orchid Garden.
  • Look for Ananas, Neoregelia and Guzmania.
  • Use the official map for the approach.

How to find the bromeliad house

Navigate first to the National Orchid Garden entrance, then follow its map and signs for the Tropical Montane Orchidetum. Use the collection’s full name on the map because this area has several display houses.

If you begin at Botanic Gardens MRT, you enter the wider Gardens at Bukit Timah Gate. Plan the rest of the walk separately and leave enough time to get to the orchid garden entrance before last entry.

What to notice among the bromeliads

Start by looking at how the leaves are arranged. Some bromeliads form a rosette, with leaves spreading around a centre. Compare the width, colour and markings of two plants and then read their labels. Ananas is the genus that includes the pineapple, which gives children a familiar name to look for.

If a plant has bright colour near its centre, look carefully at which part is coloured. Leaves, modified leaves and flowers can all contribute to the display. Observe from the visitor path and use the label when you are unsure which structure you are seeing.

How this stop differs from the other display houses

NParks also lists the Tan Hoon Siang Mist House and the Sembcorp Cool House within the Orchidetum. Choose the bromeliad collection first if you want to compare foliage and plant shapes. Add another house if you have time before leaving.

For a short family visit, ask each person to find one plant whose leaf shape or colour stands out. Read the names together and see whether the group can describe each plant without using colour alone.
