A useful recommendation tells the reader what to choose, why it fits their priorities and what disadvantage they should plan for. Use details from the prompt to make the trade-off concrete. If one option costs more but meets an essential access requirement, explain both facts and show how they affect the decision.
SEC 2027 G2 English Language (K200) Paper 1 Section B is a 30-mark Situational Writing task. The syllabus specifies 180–250 words and asks candidates to write for the given purpose, audience and context. The original practice below uses a short comparison panel.
- State your recommendation early.
- Tie each reason to a requirement and a source detail.
- Acknowledge a drawback and give the reader a next step.
Original task | Recommend a workshop venue
Your class needs a room for a 24-pupil workshop. Everyone must be able to reach the room without using stairs. The budget is $100. The Arts Room costs $60, seats 26 and can be reached only by stairs. The Activity Room costs $90, seats 24 and has a step-free entrance. Its booking closes on Wednesday.
Write an email to your form teacher. Recommend one venue, explain how it meets the access and budget requirements, acknowledge a drawback, and suggest what to do next. Use the panel details and write 180–250 words.
A model email
Dear Ms Tan,
I recommend booking the Activity Room for our class workshop. It has a step-free entrance, so all 24 pupils can reach it without using stairs. The Arts Room has two extra seats, but its stairs would prevent it from meeting the access requirement for this workshop.
The Activity Room costs $90, which is $30 more than the Arts Room. It still fits our $100 budget and leaves $10 unspent. I think the additional cost is justified because the room lets the whole class attend together. Choosing the cheaper room would save money but would leave us without an accessible venue.
One drawback is that the Activity Room has exactly 24 seats. We can seat every pupil, but there would be no spare pupil seats if the group grows. If anyone else needs a seat, we should check the room arrangements with the booking office first.
The booking closes on Wednesday. Could you let me know whether I should send the booking request before then? I can confirm the pupil count with the class and include it in the request so the office has the correct number.
Thank you, Jia Min
Why the reasons work
The first paragraph treats step-free access as a requirement. The second puts the cost in context using both the price difference and the available budget. The third acknowledges what could happen if the group grows, without claiming that an extra chair has already been approved.
For a new attempt, change the Activity Room price to $110. Explain that neither listed option meets both requirements as given. A suitable next step might be to ask the teacher whether a budget increase or another accessible room is possible.
Frequently asked questions
Should I mention the other choice?
Use it if the comparison helps explain your recommendation or the task specifically asks you to discuss both options.
Can I invent a discount?
Use the stated price unless the task provides a discount. You can propose asking about one without claiming it exists.
