Fourth, record the formatting behavior for headings, bullets, dates, units and labels. Fifth, state the main recurring risk if you accelerate too early.
That last item is especially useful. “Main risk: English noun compounds invite inconsistent target ordering” is actionable. It tells the translator what to watch as speed increases.
Worked example: a policy document
Imagine a policy begins with a sentence about eligible employees requesting hybrid work arrangements subject to operational requirements and manager approval. The next paragraphs repeatedly use “eligible employee,” “operational requirements,” “manager approval,” “request,” and “arrangement.” If the translator starts at full speed, each recurring term may be solved independently. By page four, several variants may exist.
A calibration pass slows down the first occurrence. The translator determines the administrative register, checks whether “eligible” has a defined institutional equivalent, decides how “subject to” should behave in the target language, and records the recurring terms. After that, later sentences accelerate because the expensive decisions are already stable. The first page becomes slightly slower. The next nine become faster.
Use a release condition
Calibration becomes inefficient when it never ends. Create an explicit release condition. Accelerate when the register is stable, the highest-frequency terms are decided, the source structure is understood, the formatting pattern is clear, and no unresolved issue threatens a global rewrite. Then move.
A practical release checklist asks whether you can describe the reader and register in one sentence, whether recurring terms in the sample are stable, whether you know the dominant sentence pattern, whether headings and lists have a consistent treatment, and whether any unresolved decision could force a large repair later. If those conditions are controlled, the project is ready for normal drafting speed.
Recalibrate when the text changes regime
Long documents can change character. A report may move from executive summary to methodology to recommendations. A manual may move from description to warnings to troubleshooting. A website may shift from marketing copy to technical FAQ. At a genuine structural boundary, run a micro-calibration: does the reader job change, does the register change, does terminology density change, do new repeated patterns appear, and does the risk profile change?
This should take minutes, not another full setup. The principle is sample, diagnose recurring decisions, stabilize the rules, accelerate, and recalibrate only when the work itself changes. That is what turns calibration into a speed method rather than a preparation ritual.
