Why Standards Are Important

DEFINITION LOCK
Standards are civilisation’s compatibility and safety organ.
They make parts, processes, and people interoperable, reducing error and lowering coordination loss.
Without standards, civilisation becomes a patchwork of incompatible systems that fail under load.

WHAT standards are

Agreed specifications: measurements, protocols, procedures, interfaces, quality tolerances, safety rules.

WHY they matter

Complex civilisation is built from many teams and suppliers. Standards let strangers build together safely without re-negotiating everything every time.

HOW standards work

Input: expert bodies + testing + documentation + enforcement + audits
Output: predictable interoperability, safer products, fewer catastrophic errors

PHASE reliability

Phase 0: no standards; chaos; unsafe outcomes
Phase 1: partial standards; uneven enforcement
Phase 2: stable standards with reasonable compliance
Phase 3: drift-controlled standards: rapid updates, feedback loops, incident-driven learning

FAILURE physics
