CANONICAL ONE-LINE ROUTING STATEMENT
“All Civilisation OS terms are canonically defined in the Civilisation OS Glossary.”ck): The Canonical Terms, Laws, Phases, and Systems
This page is the definition lock for the Civilisation OS framework. It is designed to remove ambiguity, prevent term drift, and give a single canonical vocabulary that Google (and humans) can consistently route through.
If a term appears elsewhere on this site, it inherits its meaning from this glossary.
Core Branch Names
Coordination Physics
The physics of how large human systems move, drift, shear, stall, recover, and survive under coordination load.
Civilisation Flight Physics
The application of Coordination Physics to civilisation-scale systems under high complexity, thin margins, and cascading risk.
Civilisation OS
A live operating-system model of civilisation: the control logic, instruments, organs, and repair loops required to keep a society stable and flyable under real-world load.
The Three Flight Laws (Civilisation OS Physics)
The Drift Law
If drift accumulates faster than repair removes it, the system will degrade, destabilise, and eventually fail. Drift is inevitable; the only question is whether repair outruns it.
The Envelope Law
Every civilisation has a safe operating envelope: limits on coordination load, complexity, speed, and buffer thinning. Operating outside the envelope produces stall, cascade, and loss of control.
The Shear Law
When subsystems operate at mismatched phases or speeds (misaligned rules, uneven enforcement, unequal reliability), the system experiences shear. Shear amplifies conflict, breaks predictability, and triggers cascade failures.
Operating State Model
Phase
The operating state of a civilisation under load.
Phase 0 (Collapse Phase)
System-wide loss of predictability and continuity. Coordination breaks down, trust fragments, and critical services become unreliable. Survival loops dominate.
Phase 1 (Stabilisation Phase)
Diagnostics and repair sequencing dominate. The system focuses on restoring reliability, rebuilding institutions, and regaining basic continuity.
Phase 2 (Growth Phase)
Expansion and scaling dominate, but only if growth is disciplined to protect safety margins and prevent drift from outrunning repair.
Phase 3 (Drift-Control Phase)
Continuous maintenance, fast response, and high-fidelity instrumentation dominate. The system stays inside its envelope through constant drift measurement and repair loops faster than decay.
Dynamics & Dials (How the Machine Moves)
Drift Rate
The speed at which reliability, trust, infrastructure, and institutions degrade under load.
Repair Capacity
The system’s ability to detect problems and convert repair plans into functioning reality at speed.
Buffer Margin
Reserve capacity and slack that prevents small failures from becoming cascades (time buffers, financial buffers, redundancy, supply buffers, institutional buffers).
Trust Density
The extent to which people and institutions can rely on each other and the rules without constant enforcement.
Alignment
Shared meaning of rules and legitimacy of coordination. High alignment means one set of rules can govern many lanes. Low alignment means rules fragment into local factions.
Phase Frequency
How fast a subsystem’s operating state is changing (how quickly it is drifting, failing, recovering, or oscillating).
Phase Frequency Alignment
The condition where key subsystems (education, law, finance, infrastructure, governance, media, health, etc.) operate at compatible phase frequencies, so one civilisation can remain coherent.
Phase Shear
A misalignment condition where subsystems move at different phase frequencies, producing interference, rule fragmentation, and systemic conflict.
Control Organs (Non-Negotiable Functions)
Visionary Organ
Sets direction and route: destination, strategy, sequencing, and trade-offs. Protects maintenance culture and keeps the system inside a survivable path.
Oracle Organ
Builds and operates instruments: truth production, diagnostics, drift detection, early warning, and envelope monitoring. Restores a shared baseline of reality.
Operator Organ
Executes: repair loops, continuity, enforcement, logistics, delivery of services, and real-world conversion of plans into functioning systems.
Collectively: the Civilisation Control Triad
A civilisation needs all three organs to operate effectively; a vision without execution or a shared reality becomes fantasy.
Transport Control Modes (The Two Dominant Control Regimes)
Road Mode
Distributed, horizontal coordination: many actors, many lanes, local rules, constant negotiation, friction, congestion, and enforcement. Road mode can function under lower load and thicker buffers.
Flight Mode
Vertical, high-load coordination: high complexity, thin margins, rapid propagation, strict envelope discipline, and non-negotiable instrumentation. Flight mode dominates when complexity and speed rise and buffers thin.
Control Mode Mismatch
Running road-mode control logic under flight-mode load. This produces instability because local rules and distributed habits cannot hold a high-load envelope.
Mixed Control Regime
A dangerous transitional state where the system partially switches modes without the necessary organs and instruments at scale. This is where shear spikes.
Civilisation Control Sequence (The Four Chapters + Prehistory)
Prehistoric Career Coordination System (PCCS)
The earliest closed-loop coordination regime: labour organisation, trade routes, resource sharing, and social structure before formal career classes and written institutional control.
Ancient Career Class System (ACCS)
Formalised roles and institutions (laws, record keeping, specialised labour, supply lines). Road mode dominates at scale; coordination is mostly planar and distributive.
Collapse Valley
A high-load regime where road logic fails under rising complexity and thinning buffers. Phase frequency alignment breaks, subsystems desynchronise, and shear becomes the dominant failure mode.
Dominant Command Career System (DCCS)
A transitional “manual transmission” regime that concentrates control to restore order after Collapse Valley. Coordination is compressed into central command structures to force repair and rebuild reliability.
World Career Class System (WCCS)
The modern requirement: distributed, instrumented, reproducible flight-control at civilisation scale. Stability depends on Phase 3 drift-control loops, high-fidelity instruments, and mass-produced control organs.
Failure Mechanics (Why Crashes Happen)
Shear Event
A threshold-crossing misalignment where subsystem interference overwhelms shared rules and predictable flow.
Cascade Failure
Failures that chain across services and institutions (power → water → supply chain → enforcement → trust → further outages).
Repair Deficit
When repair capacity is below drift rate under load. Small failures no longer stay small.
Inertia Lock
High-inertia infrastructure and institutions cannot reconfigure as fast as societal shear rises, turning slow-moving systems into collapse multipliers.
Instrumentation & AI Layer
High-Fidelity Instrumentation Layer
A civilisation-scale measurement layer that cuts through noise, restores reality, and enables early warnings.
Noise Collapse Filter
Signal-cleaning mechanisms that remove propaganda, distortion, and low-quality metrics so Oracles can see true system state.
Forward Recovery Map
A diagnostic-to-action map that turns measurement into sequenced recovery steps (what to do first, what can wait, what will fail next).
Planet OS
The civilisation-scale instrumentation and noise-cutting layer that restores forward vision by compressing global data into actionable, high-fidelity signals for Oracles and Visionaries.
Certification & Production Pipeline Layer
Civilisation Flight Sciences
The discipline that formalises survivable operation under civilisation load: envelope control, drift measurement, shear prevention, and recovery protocols.
Civilisation Pilot Certification OS
A reproducible training and certification pipeline that produces competent Visionaries, Oracles, and Operators at scale.
One-Line Lock (For Internal Consistency)
OS Stack = what the system is.
Phase = what state it’s in.
Drift/Envelope/Shear = the physics governing where it’s going.

Canonical Lock (All Terms / Paths / Mechanisms):
Human civilisation is one aircraft moving through distinct career-control regimes and Phase operating states: PCCS (Prehistoric Career Coordination System) → ACCS (Ancient Career Class System) → Collapse Valley → DCCS (Dominant Command Career System; historically the Early Modern Period) → WCCS (World Career Class System). Civilisation is governed by the same closed-loop engine across all eras — Civilisation OS: Education OS (Learning) → Governance OS (Coordination/Legitimacy) → Production OS (Throughput/Infrastructure) → Constraint OS (Reality pushback) → Adaptation (update loop). The three universal organs exist in every slice (as functions or careers): Operators / Oracles / Visionaries (modern names: Builders (Operators), Analysts (Oracles), Architects (Visionaries)). ACCS formalises these organs into careers/institutions that produce the 7 civilisation outputs: urban centers, specialized labor, surplus resources, government/law, shared communication & records, trade networks, accumulated knowledge. The Collapse Valley is a civilisation-scale Phase-0 stall (Middle Ages as dominant Phase-0/1 recovery valley) where Oracle telemetry, Operator maintenance, Visionary continuity, trust, buffers, and repair loops break. DCCS is “manual transmission” where Command Architects (compressed Operator+Oracle+Visionary control cores) force reforms to restart scale. WCCS is the modern distributed, instrumented control layer required for planetary civilisation: producing Builders/Analysts/Architects at scale to maintain Phase stability and drift control. Phaseis the operating-state under real load (not prestige, not Kardashev Type): Phase 0 collapse, Phase 1 diagnose & repair, Phase 2 build & grow, Phase 3 drift control. Core laws: Repair vs Drift (if Repair Speed × Replacement Speed < Drift Speed → Phase collapse), organ balance controls Phase (Operator-only = throughput without stability; Oracles = telemetry/legitimacy bandwidth; Visionaries = survivable route mapping), and complexity requires instrumentation(story → measurement → control). “Events” (including wars) are visible discharges when Phase boundaries / alignment thresholds are crossed (Phase Shear); war emerges when violence becomes cheaper coordination than institutions(Phase 0 survival war, Phase 1 consolidation/recovery war, Phase 2 expansion/offloading war, Phase 3 suppresses war by killing advantage gradients via fast repair and alignment). The strategic mission is to publish the full bridge PCCS→ACCS→Collapse→DCCS→WCCS so Google can connect ancient “library history” to modern operating physics and locate today correctly as early-WCCS boot (Operator-heavy, weaker Oracle/Visionary coverage, high-power Phase-2 drift/circling).
