One of the fastest ways to make a Junior College argument sound more confident than it is, is to use a causal verb too early.
“Social media causes anxiety.” “Wealth creates happiness.” “Examinations produce resilience.” Each sentence may contain part of a defensible idea, but each also makes a very strong claim about what produces what.

Association is not explanation
If two things occur together, we may describe an association. That is useful information. But an association does not by itself tell us whether A causes B, B causes A, both are influenced by C, or the pattern is partly accidental.
This is why vocabulary matters. Associated with, correlated with, linked to, contributes to, enables, triggers and causes are not stylistic alternatives. They describe different levels of causal commitment.
Build a causal-strength ladder
- Co-occurrence: coincides with
- Association: is associated with, correlates with
- Possible contribution: may contribute to, can amplify
- Mechanism: enables, constrains, mediates, increases the likelihood of
- Strong causation: produces, leads to, causes
The higher the writer climbs, the more evidence and mechanism are required.
Four questions before writing “causes”
- Does the supposed cause occur before the effect?
- Is there a plausible mechanism connecting them?
- Could another factor explain both?
- Does the relationship remain when relevant differences are considered?
A JC essay does not need to perform a scientific study, but it should understand what a causal claim is asking the reader to believe.
The confounder problem
Suppose students who read more also achieve better examination results. It is tempting to write that reading causes higher achievement. Reading may indeed help. But other factors could influence both: prior ability, family environment, motivation, school resources or time spent studying.
These are potential confounding variables: factors associated with both the proposed cause and outcome that can distort the apparent relationship.
Reverse causation
Sometimes the direction may run the other way. Does loneliness lead people to use social media more, or does social media increase loneliness? Both processes could operate simultaneously.
Useful vocabulary includes reverse causation, bidirectional relationship, feedback loop and reciprocal effect.
Mechanism makes causal language stronger
A causal argument becomes more credible when it explains how the effect might occur.
Compare “High housing costs reduce fertility” with “Persistently high housing costs can delay household formation by increasing the financial threshold for independent living and parenthood.”
The second sentence does not merely claim an effect. It proposes a mechanism.
Necessary and sufficient causes are different
A factor can be necessary without being sufficient, or sufficient in some settings without being necessary everywhere. Oxygen is necessary for ordinary combustion but does not by itself guarantee a fire. In social questions, causal structures are usually even more complex.
That is why phrases such as one contributing factor, a necessary condition, not sufficient on its own and part of a wider causal system are so useful.
Worked example: education and class size
Weak: “Small classes cause better results.”
Stronger: “Smaller classes can improve the conditions for individual feedback, but their effect on attainment depends on teaching quality, student needs and how the additional teacher attention is used.”
The second version preserves the plausible mechanism without pretending that class size operates independently of everything else.
Worked example: wealth and happiness
Income and reported life satisfaction may be related, especially where additional income reduces material insecurity. But the relationship may weaken at higher levels and interact with health, social relationships, expectations and inequality.
A careful writer therefore distinguishes association, marginal effect, mediating factor and diminishing returns.
Causal language for essays
- Cautious: is associated with, may reflect, is consistent with
- Contributory: contributes to, amplifies, exacerbates, mitigates
- Mechanistic: operates through, is mediated by, creates an incentive for
- Conditional: is more likely when, depends on, under conditions of
- Strong: causes, produces, directly leads to
Do not become so cautious that nothing can be said
Precision is not timidity. If strong evidence and a credible mechanism support causation, use causal language. The lesson is not “never say causes”. It is “know what you are claiming when you say it”.
Over-hedging can make writing equally weak. “Perhaps possibly maybe” is not nuance. Calibration is the goal.
A one-paragraph causal audit
- Underline every causal verb.
- Ask whether the evidence shows association or causation.
- Name at least one alternative explanation.
- Explain one plausible mechanism.
- Decide whether the causal wording should be strengthened, weakened or retained.
This five-step audit can transform a sweeping paragraph into a much more defensible one.
Why this matters beyond General Paper
Adults encounter causal claims constantly: in news reports, public policy, business analysis, health discussions and political argument. Decisions become poor when association is mistaken for mechanism or when one cause is treated as the only cause.
Careful causal vocabulary is therefore part of intellectual self-defence.
What mastery looks like
A strong JC writer can distinguish correlation from causation, propose mechanisms, notice confounders, consider reverse causation and calibrate the verb to the evidence.
The result is not weaker argument. It is argument whose strength can be trusted.
Causal Reasoning Lab: What Else Could Produce the Same Pattern?
Good causal reasoning is not satisfied by a plausible story. Many different stories can fit the same pattern. The stronger question is whether the proposed mechanism survives comparison with alternative explanations.
Five Rival Explanations to Test
- Confounding: a third factor influences both variables.
- Reverse causation: the supposed effect may partly cause the supposed cause.
- Selection: people entering the observed group differ before exposure occurs.
- Measurement: the apparent relationship may reflect how variables were defined or recorded.
- Coincidence/noise: a short or small dataset may produce a pattern that does not persist.
Worked Example: Screen Time and Academic Performance
If heavier screen use is associated with lower grades, several explanations remain possible. Screen use may displace study; students already struggling may turn to entertainment more often; household routines may influence both study habits and device use; or the category “screen time” may combine productive and recreational activities. A mature essay therefore avoids treating one correlation as a complete causal diagnosis.
Mechanism Chain
Strengthen causal writing by stating the intermediate steps. Instead of “Housing costs reduce fertility”, write a chain: higher housing costs → delayed independent household formation → later family formation → fewer years available for planned childbearing. Each arrow can then be questioned and supported.
Feedback Loops
Social systems often contain reciprocal causation. Distrust may reduce institutional cooperation; poor cooperation may then worsen outcomes, producing more distrust. Vocabulary such as feedback loop, self-reinforcing cycle, bidirectional effect and path dependence helps students describe these systems without forcing a one-way cause.
Natural Experiments and Comparisons
When two similar settings experience different changes, comparison can strengthen causal reasoning. A JC essay need not use technical research methods, but it can ask the same intelligent question: what happened where the proposed cause changed, and what happened where it did not?

- Observed: coincides with, is associated with.
- Plausible: may contribute to, may partly explain.
- Mechanistic: operates through, increases the likelihood by, enables.
- Strong: produces, directly causes, is a necessary condition for.
Causal Audit for Any GP Topic
- State the proposed cause and effect.
- Write the mechanism chain.
- Name two alternative explanations.
- Check for reverse causation.
- Identify evidence that would discriminate between explanations.
- Choose the weakest causal verb that still states the case accurately.
Careful causal reasoning does not make an essay timid. It makes the conclusion harder to knock down because the writer has already tested the obvious alternative stories.
