How Formal and Informal Register Work in Secondary English

A smiling student in a blue pinafore holds a pencil over an open book at a classroom desk, with textbooks, a whiteboard and a sunlit window nearby.

Register is not a switch between “good English” and “casual English”. It is the set of language choices that fit a relationship, situation and purpose.

Three questions before choosing register

  • What is the relationship between writer and reader?
  • How official or consequential is the situation?
  • What action or response is the writer trying to obtain?

Formal does not mean inflated

Inflated: “I hereby wish to humbly request your esteemed consideration regarding the aforementioned matter.”

Clear formal: “I am writing to request permission to use the hall for our rehearsal on 14 September.”

The second is more professional because it is direct, courteous and specific.

Informal does not mean careless

A message to a friend can use contractions, personal references and a warmer tone while remaining grammatically clear. “Hey, can you send me the notes from today? I missed the last part of the lesson.” is informal but functional.

Register controls directness

Register can shift inside one text

A speech may open formally, become more conversational while sharing a personal experience, then return to a clear formal call to action. Consistency means controlled appropriateness, not mechanical sameness.

Common mismatch repairs

  • Remove slang from an official complaint unless quoting it is necessary.
  • Replace stiff ceremonial phrases in ordinary school correspondence with clear courteous language.
  • Keep greetings and closings consistent with the relationship.
  • Do not confuse politeness with vagueness; the requested action must remain clear.

Transfer drill

Rewrite “You guys messed up my booking, fix it ASAP” as a firm but professional message to an organisation.

Possible repair

“My booking confirmation shows a different date from the one I selected. Could you please correct the booking to 18 September and send an updated confirmation?” The complaint remains direct, but the register supports resolution.
