A student is more ready for Additional Mathematics when the algebra underneath it is already dependable. Readiness is less about liking Mathematics and more about whether symbolic manipulation, equations, fractions, indices, functions, and multi-step reasoning can be handled without every line requiring rescue.
Look for flexibility rather than memorised speed. Can the student rearrange unfamiliar expressions, explain what a symbol represents, connect one method to another, and recover after a first attempt fails? If ordinary algebra is still fragile, A-Math often magnifies that weakness. Repairing the base first can be more productive than rushing into harder content.
