Media literacy begins with a simple separation: the post is not the event.
A short video shows a crowded corridor and claims that an entire event was chaotic. A graph shows a dramatic rise but begins its axis near the previous value. A headline says “experts agree” without naming the experts. An AI-generated image looks photographic enough to trigger outrage before anyone checks whether the pictured event happened.
Media literacy education teaches learners how representations are produced, selected, framed, distributed and interpreted. It asks who created the material, what claim it makes, what evidence supports it, which context is missing, how the format shapes perception and what responsibility the learner carries before sharing or acting.
Scope: this article is educational and non-partisan. All media cases, screenshots, statistics and AI-style outputs described below are invented examples. No real person is being accused of misinformation. Learners should use teacher-approved materials and should not harass sources, impersonate others or spread false content as part of a lesson.

1. Media literacy is not simply knowing that fake news exists
A learner can know that misinformation exists and still share a misleading post because it confirms a prior belief, looks urgent or appears to come from a familiar account.
Media literacy therefore needs behaviours: pause, identify the claim, inspect the source, seek context, compare evidence, distinguish fact from interpretation and decide whether sharing is justified.

2. Source means origin, ownership and responsibility
Ask who created the material, who published it and who is responsible for correcting it. A screenshot can detach information from its original source and remove date, author or context.
A source can be authoritative about one thing and weak for another. A school is authoritative about its own timetable; it is not automatically the strongest source for a medical claim.

3. A source contains claims; the claims still need evidence
“Attendance increased after the programme” is a claim. A table of attendance records may be evidence for the increase. “The programme caused the increase” is a larger causal claim requiring more evidence.
Teach learners to separate the location of information from the support for the statement. A citation should be opened and checked rather than treated as a decorative guarantee.

4. Understand means reading beyond the headline
A headline compresses. It may omit conditions, uncertainty or the difference between an estimate and an observation.
Ask learners to read the underlying material and rewrite the claim in their own words without strengthening it. If a report says “may improve,” the summary should not become “proves.”
NLB’s S.U.R.E. guidance explicitly encourages readers not to stop at headlines and to distinguish factual information from opinion.
5. Research means seeking independent context
Several websites repeating the same story may all depend on one original claim. Repetition is not the same as independent corroboration.
Teach learners to trace where each source obtained its information. Does it report its own evidence, quote the same person or simply copy another article?
Independent context can reveal whether a claim is current, disputed, corrected or misunderstood.
6. Evaluate means deciding what the evidence justifies
Evaluation is not a mood of suspicion. It is a reasoned judgement about what can be concluded.
A responsible conclusion may be “well supported,” “partly supported,” “not enough information,” or “contradicted by stronger evidence.”
The learner should also consider whether the source fairly represents alternative relevant information or hides a major limitation.
7. Framing changes attention without necessarily changing facts
Two headlines can describe the same numerical result differently. “Most students support the proposal” and “One in three students does not support the proposal” may both be compatible with the same fictional survey.
The facts have not necessarily changed; the frame directs attention towards different parts.
Teach learners to reconstruct the underlying data before reacting to the frame.
8. Selection is one of media’s most powerful operations
A camera shows what is inside the frame and hides what is outside. An article chooses which quotes to include. A short clip selects seconds from a longer sequence.
Selection is unavoidable; no representation contains everything. The literacy question is whether the selection creates a misleading impression relative to the claim.
Ask what additional context could change interpretation.
9. Persuasion works through argument, emotion, identity and repetition
Media can persuade through evidence and logic, but also through fear, humour, belonging, status and repeated exposure.
Emotion does not automatically invalidate a message. A moving story can illustrate a real issue. The learner should ask whether the emotional force is supported by representative evidence or being used to replace it.

10. Repetition creates familiarity, not proof
A claim repeated across feeds can begin to feel true because it becomes familiar. The learner should trace whether new evidence has appeared or only additional repetitions.
A classroom activity can show the same invented claim several times in different visual styles, then reveal that all versions came from one unsupported source.
Familiarity is a psychological state, not an evidence standard.
11. Numbers can be accurate and still mislead through presentation
A graph can truncate its axis, change the denominator or compare periods of different lengths. A percentage can hide the underlying count.
Teach learners to read axes, units, base populations and time periods before interpreting the visual impression.

12. Images need provenance and context
A genuine photograph can be used misleadingly when the date, location or caption is wrong. Media literacy should therefore distinguish image authenticity from contextual accuracy.
Ask where the image first appeared, what is known about the date and location, and whether the caption matches the evidence.
A reverse-image or archive search can be useful where appropriate, but the educational aim is provenance reasoning, not mastery of one search feature.
13. Video creates temporal framing
A short clip can begin after an important event or end before a response. Editing changes the sequence available to the viewer.
Give learners two teacher-created edits of the same harmless fictional scene. Ask what each suggests and which omitted moment changes the interpretation.
This teaches that video is evidence, but not automatically complete evidence.
14. Worked case: the “chaotic corridor” video
Invented case: a twelve-second clip shows many students in a corridor. The caption says, “The entire school event was chaotic.” The clip contains no date, event name or wider view.
Learners identify the claim’s scope: “entire event” and “chaotic.” The video directly supports only that the recorded corridor was crowded during the captured seconds.
The class lists evidence needed for the larger claim: event duration, other locations, schedule, safety incidents, participant accounts or official information.
15. Add context and watch the interpretation change
The teacher then reveals fictional context: the clip was recorded during a five-minute transition between activities; the event lasted four hours; no safety incident is recorded in the exercise.
The clip remains genuine within the fictional case, but the original caption now appears overbroad.
Students revise the caption to something proportional: “A corridor became crowded during one transition at the event.”
16. Compare a fair correction with an overcorrection
“The event was perfectly organised” is also unsupported. Correcting exaggeration does not justify inventing the opposite conclusion.
The class should learn to move towards the evidence, not towards whichever side they prefer.
This distinction is central to intellectually honest media literacy.
17. Algorithms shape exposure, not truth
Recommendation systems can influence which posts a learner sees repeatedly. High engagement can make content more visible even when visibility does not correspond to accuracy.
Teach learners to distinguish “this is everywhere in my feed” from “this is common in the world.” The feed is a personalised selection environment.

18. Agenda setting concerns what receives attention
Media can influence which issues feel important by repeatedly selecting them for coverage, even without telling audiences exactly what opinion to hold.
A classroom comparison can examine two fictional front pages covering different subsets of the same day’s events. Ask what each suggests deserves attention.

19. Synthetic media changes the cost of creating convincing representations
Images, audio, video and text can now be generated or altered rapidly. The educational response cannot rely on one visual clue that supposedly reveals every fake.
Teach provenance, corroboration and consequence. Who claims this recording is authentic? Is there an original source? Do independent authoritative sources confirm the event? What action would follow if we believe it?

20. Deepfake education should avoid training students to trust unreliable visual tells
Generation methods improve. A cue that worked on older synthetic media may fail later.
Visual inspection can raise a question, but it should not be the only verification method. Check source chain, context, authoritative confirmation and whether the content existed before the claimed event.
Students should not create deceptive impersonations of real people as part of a lesson.
21. AI summaries can preserve facts while distorting scope
An AI summary may omit qualifiers, populations, dates or uncertainty. Learners should compare generated text with the source rather than ask the same tool whether its summary is accurate.
A useful verification table has four columns: source claim, generated claim, difference, consequence.
The learner should be able to identify when a summary changes “some,” “may,” “in this study” or “as of this date.”
22. The more consequential the claim, the stronger the verification
A harmless entertainment rumour and an allegation about a person should not be treated as equivalent sharing decisions.
Teach proportionality: reputational, health, financial, legal or safety consequences require stronger evidence and sometimes qualified authorities.
“I am not sure” is an acceptable stopping point when the evidence does not justify amplification.
23. Media literacy includes creation because creators make framing decisions
A learner who makes a poster, video or article chooses title, image, sequence, quotation and scale. Creation reveals how easily representation can shift attention.
Require a source note and a framing note: what did you choose to foreground, what did you omit, and why is the resulting representation still fair to the evidence?
This turns media production into reflective literacy rather than only technical presentation.
24. Corrections are part of responsible media practice
A learner may discover that a statistic was copied incorrectly or a source was misunderstood. The correct response is to fix the artifact and make the correction visible where appropriate.
Teach version history: what changed, why, and whether the original conclusion still stands.

25. Attribution protects the evidence trail
Citations let another person locate the source and inspect whether it supports the claim. Attribution also distinguishes the learner’s own analysis from borrowed material.
Teach students to preserve enough information for checking: author or institution, title, date where relevant and working link or reference.
A citation is not merely a penalty-avoidance ritual. It is infrastructure for verification.
26. Copyright and permission are media-literacy issues
Being able to access an image does not automatically grant unrestricted reuse. Learners should understand that copyright, licences, public domain and permitted educational use are different categories.
School tasks should use materials and permissions appropriate to the intended sharing context.

27. Media literacy should be distributed across subjects with clear ownership
English can examine argument and rhetoric. History can examine provenance and context. Science can examine evidence and uncertainty. Mathematics can examine graphs and denominators. CCE can address cyber wellness and responsible participation.
“Everyone teaches media literacy” is useful only if the school knows which decisions each subject will teach.
The goal is reinforcement across authentic disciplinary contexts, not the same generic fake-news worksheet repeated everywhere.
28. Assessment should test transfer to unfamiliar material
If students memorise that one classroom website is unreliable, they have learned an answer, not necessarily a method.
Provide a new source, claim or visual and ask learners to identify what they would check, what they can conclude now and what remains uncertain.
The evidence should reveal source judgement, not only vocabulary such as “bias” or “fake.”
29. Media literacy should not become universal cynicism
If every source is taught as equally suspicious, learners may conclude that nothing can be known. That is not literacy.
Teach calibrated trust: some sources have stronger expertise, accountability and evidence for particular questions. Credibility is earned and domain-specific.
The purpose of verification is to know better, not to retreat from knowledge.
30. A practical media literacy audit
- What claim is the learner evaluating?
- Who created and published it?
- What evidence supports the claim?
- What date and context define its applicability?
- Is repetition independent corroboration or copying?
- How does framing direct attention?
- Do numbers preserve the correct denominator and scale?
- Could synthetic or altered media be involved?
- What consequence would follow from sharing or acting?
- What conclusion is justified now, including uncertainty?
31. The final goal is not suspicion; it is responsible interpretation
Media literacy education leaves learners better able to slow down between representation and reaction. They can trace a source, examine evidence, recognise framing, verify consequential claims, use AI without surrendering judgement and correct errors when reality returns better information.
That is increasingly central to education because much of the world now reaches learners through mediated form before it reaches them directly.
