A learner can be present in school and still have too little safety, belonging, energy or agency to participate well.
Student wellbeing is sometimes treated as an extra programme beside the “real” work of education. That division is too simple. Learning takes place through attention, memory, effort, relationships, feedback, risk-taking and repeated participation. Conditions that make those processes difficult can also make education difficult to use.
This guide treats wellbeing as a multidimensional educational condition. It asks what schools can observe and design: safe participation, respectful relationships, a workable load, understandable expectations, belonging, appropriate agency, routes to help, and coordination with families and qualified services when the need goes beyond teaching.
Important boundary: this article is about educational design and school support, not diagnosis, therapy or emergency care. Teachers should not infer a mental-health condition from ordinary classroom observations. When there is a safety concern, severe distress or a need outside the teacher’s competence, use the school’s safeguarding and professional-support procedures. The cases below are invented and do not describe real students.

1. Wellbeing is broader than mood
The OECD describes wellbeing as multidimensional, including objective and material components as well as subjective and psychological facets. Its student-wellbeing work considers school life alongside relationships, health and other aspects of students’ lives. Source: OECD, Students’ well-being.
For education, this means a school should not reduce wellbeing to asking whether learners feel happy. A student may feel frustrated during demanding learning while still being safe, supported and engaged. Another may report feeling fine while quietly disengaging from every task. Wellbeing needs several observations, none of which should be mistaken for a full clinical picture.
A practical school lens can ask about six conditions: safety, belonging, relationships, agency, load and recovery, and access to help. These categories are an original organising framework for this guide, not an OECD diagnostic instrument.
Each condition should remain connected to concrete experience. “Belonging” can be explored through whether a learner can participate without ridicule, knows who to approach, and has a credible place in the class. “Agency” can be explored through whether the learner understands choices, can ask questions and can see a path to improve work.
2. Wellbeing and learning interact in both directions
Difficult learning conditions can undermine wellbeing. Constant uncertainty about expectations, public humiliation after mistakes, unmanageable workload or repeated failure without useful feedback can make school harder to enter psychologically and practically.
The reverse can also occur. Conflict, poor sleep, fear, exclusion or difficulties outside school may affect attention and participation. A teacher can observe the educational effect without claiming to know the full cause.
The correct response is therefore not “wellbeing first, learning later” or “learning first, wellbeing later.” Schools often need to protect both at once: make the next task usable, maintain reasonable expectations, and ensure the learner has access to appropriate support.
A student who has missed several lessons may need both a humane re-entry and a clear academic recovery plan. Removing all work indefinitely may leave the learning gap larger; demanding immediate full catch-up may make re-entry impossible. The design problem is to restore participation progressively.
3. Safety is the minimum condition, not the whole model
Physical and psychological safety are foundational. Learners need protection from intimidation, harassment and preventable harm. They also need to be able to make ordinary academic mistakes without being humiliated.
But a safe classroom can still be educationally weak. Learners may be protected yet bored, excluded from meaningful decisions or given work too easy to build capability. Wellbeing should not become an argument for removing every challenge.
The stronger goal is safe challenge: difficult enough to require thought, supported enough to permit entry, and socially safe enough that error can be used as information. This connects directly to Classroom Management and Instructional Design.
4. Belonging is participation with a credible place in the group
Belonging is not the same as popularity. A learner may have few close friends and still experience a strong educational belonging: the teacher knows them, peers take their ideas seriously, the rules are predictable, and there is a route back after mistakes.
Look for structural signals. Are some students repeatedly left without a group? Does one confident learner speak for everyone? Are examples and classroom roles distributed in ways that make certain students feel permanently peripheral? Does correction permit re-entry?
Do not solve belonging by forcing public disclosure. A student should not have to explain private circumstances to the whole class before receiving ordinary support. A school can design inclusive participation while protecting privacy.
5. Relationships are part of the educational infrastructure
A useful teacher–student relationship makes honest educational communication possible. The learner can ask for clarification, receive correction, disagree appropriately and trust that a mistake will not become a permanent identity.
This does not require teachers to become friends or therapists. Professional warmth, predictability and respect are compatible with firm boundaries. A teacher can say “This work is not yet at the required standard” while making the route to improvement clear.
Notice ordinary positive interactions. If adult attention arrives mainly when something goes wrong, the relationship can become organised around correction. Brief recognition of preparation, persistence, useful questions and recovery helps make successful participation visible.
6. Agency means having useful control, not unlimited choice
Students do not control every educational requirement. They may need to learn content they did not choose, meet deadlines and accept correction. Agency operates inside these constraints when learners can understand the purpose, make meaningful decisions, monitor progress and influence how they act next.
A small example: allow a student to choose which of two suitable problems to attempt first, while keeping the same learning goal. A larger example: let students compare two project formats and explain which better demonstrates the required capability.
Choice should not conceal abandonment. “Do whatever you want” can leave inexperienced learners without enough structure. Agency grows when support helps the learner make increasingly consequential decisions well.
7. Predictability reduces unnecessary uncertainty
Learners can cope with demanding work more effectively when ordinary processes are understandable. They know when an assignment is due, what quality looks like, how to ask for help, what happens after an absence and how feedback will be used.
Predictability is not rigidity. A school can make exceptions when circumstances justify them. The important point is that the learner should not need to guess which hidden rule applies or whether asking for help will produce an unpredictable response.
Audit one ordinary process from the student’s perspective. Can a learner who misses a lesson find what happened and the first recovery step? Can a learner identify which tasks are essential and which are extension? Can a student correct an administrative mistake without escalating through multiple adults?
8. Worked case: the student who returns after a difficult week
Invented case: a secondary student returns after several days away. Four subjects immediately provide complete lists of missed work. The student cannot tell which tasks are essential and spends the first day copying notes without understanding what is needed next.
The wellbeing problem is partly an information-design problem. The student faces uncertainty, overload and the fear of being permanently behind. The learning problem is real too: important knowledge was missed.
A proposed recovery process begins with triage. Each subject identifies the minimum knowledge needed to re-enter the current lesson, one essential catch-up task and any work that can wait. A named adult helps the student see the sequence across subjects rather than receiving four independent urgent lists.
The student completes a small first task in school and receives confirmation about the next step. This creates evidence that re-entry is possible. The teacher does not promise that all missed learning can be recovered instantly, but the route becomes finite and visible.
Review after several lessons. Is the student participating in current work? Which prerequisite gaps remain? Has the catch-up plan become manageable or is it still expanding faster than it can be completed? Adjust according to evidence.
This case is not a mental-health intervention. It demonstrates how a school can reduce avoidable educational uncertainty while maintaining the responsibility to rebuild missed learning.
9. Worked case: the high-performing student who stops asking for help
Invented case: a student continues to achieve strong marks but starts spending excessive time perfecting routine homework and avoids submitting work that feels incomplete. Teachers initially see only high performance.
The educational signal is not a diagnosis. It is a pattern worth clarifying: workload appears to be expanding without equivalent educational benefit, and help-seeking is decreasing.
A teacher can begin with the task. Which parts require careful completion and which are practice? Is every correction equally important? Can the learner identify a stopping rule, such as completing the required set, checking specified errors and then moving on?
Talk privately and describe the observation rather than assigning a motive: “I notice this homework is taking much longer than intended, and you are restarting work after small errors. Let’s look at what the task actually requires.” If the student describes distress or a need beyond ordinary teaching support, use the school’s appropriate referral route.
The school should also inspect its own message. If every teacher calls every task “important,” students cannot prioritise. If only flawless work receives praise, the institution may unintentionally reward excessive perfection over efficient learning.
10. Worked case: the student who is present but socially peripheral
Invented case: a student attends regularly, completes individual work and rarely causes concern, but in group tasks other learners assign them clerical roles. Their ideas seldom enter the final answer.
A wellbeing survey might miss this if the student does not describe the situation negatively. Classroom observation reveals a participation problem: the learner has a seat but little intellectual influence in collaborative work.
Change the group task before changing the student. Require each learner to prepare an initial idea individually. Use rotating roles that carry intellectual responsibility. Ask the group to compare alternatives before selecting a conclusion. Follow with a brief individual explanation.
Then observe whether the student’s reasoning becomes more visible. If not, investigate further. The aim is not forced sociability. It is ensuring that collaboration does not systematically hide one learner’s participation.
11. Academic challenge should include recovery
Challenge becomes more sustainable when failure has a route to learning. A difficult test can be educationally useful if students later understand errors, receive appropriate instruction and attempt related work again. Without recovery, the assessment may become only a judgement event.
Build recovery into ordinary routines: error analysis, targeted reteaching, revised responses, later retrieval and changed-context practice. The learner should see that “not yet” has an operational meaning rather than being a comforting phrase.

12. Workload is a system property as well as a student habit
A learner may have six individually reasonable assignments that become unreasonable when combined. Each teacher sees one task; the student experiences the total system. This is a coordination problem schools can inspect.
For a sample week, map major deadlines, expected homework time and high-stakes assessments across subjects. The goal is not to guarantee perfectly even workload. It is to identify avoidable clustering and hidden assumptions about how much time every other subject is using.
Distinguish productive difficulty from redundant volume. Ten carefully selected practice items may reveal more than thirty near-identical items. A long assignment can be justified when the capability requires sustained work; it should not be long merely because quantity looks rigorous.
Give learners stopping rules. Define required work, extension work and what to do when a task takes far longer than expected. Without this, conscientious students may interpret every unfinished possibility as an obligation.
13. Rest and recovery are part of a sustainable learning system
Schools control only part of a learner’s day, but they can avoid designing as though students have unlimited time and attention. A timetable that repeatedly compresses assessment preparation into late-night work may undermine the very learning the assignments were meant to support.
Use spacing where appropriate, announce major requirements early enough for planning and avoid avoidable deadline collisions. Teach students to distinguish retrieval practice from endlessly rereading notes. Efficient study is a wellbeing issue when it reduces unnecessary time without reducing learning.
For learners managing unusually difficult circumstances, schools may need specific temporary adjustments. These should be coordinated and reviewed rather than negotiated independently with every teacher when a central process exists.
14. Digital life crosses the school boundary
Digital platforms extend learning beyond the classroom, but they can also extend notifications, deadlines, comparison and social interaction into times previously separated from school. A school should therefore examine not only whether a platform functions but how its communication expectations operate across the day.

At school level, set communication expectations that are understandable. Does a message sent at night require action before the next morning? Are several platforms used for different subjects? Can a student know which notification is urgent and which can wait?
Digital wellbeing is not solved by one screen-time number. Consider the purpose, content, timing and social context of use. A student reading an assigned text, creating a model and receiving hostile messages are all “on a screen” but experiencing very different educational conditions.
15. Teach help-seeking as a capability
Learners need to know when, where and how to ask for help. “Ask if you need anything” may be too vague. A student should know which teacher handles subject questions, which adult handles a wider concern, what an ordinary help request looks like, and what happens after it is made.
In academic work, teach specific help-seeking: show the step you can do, identify the point of uncertainty and bring the relevant attempt. This avoids the false choice between total independence and immediate rescue.
For wider concerns, privacy matters. A learner should not need to explain something sensitive in a public queue. Schools need a route that is accessible without promising secrecy where safeguarding responsibilities require action.
16. Teachers need role boundaries and escalation routes
A teacher can notice changes in participation, listen, adjust an educational task, document relevant observations and connect a student with the appropriate school process. The teacher should not diagnose conditions outside their competence or promise support the institution cannot provide.
Write down the support map: ordinary classroom concern, pastoral or guidance concern, learning-support concern, safeguarding concern and urgent safety concern. Staff need to know where each goes and who owns the next action.

17. Families can add context without being asked to solve school alone
A family may know that a learner is sleeping poorly, caring for someone, struggling with transport, spending excessive time on one assignment or misunderstanding a school process. That information can change the educational response.
Communicate observations, not labels. “We have noticed that she has not started the independent task in three lessons and says the instructions are difficult to follow” is more useful than “She has lost motivation.” Ask what the family sees and explain what the school will do next.
Do not make home support a hidden prerequisite for ordinary access. A learning plan that requires a parent to reteach specialist content nightly may be shifting the instructional burden rather than solving it.

18. Student voice should be specific enough to change a decision
Broad surveys can indicate patterns, but improvement requires more detail. Ask what part of the day is difficult, which process is unclear, where help is accessible and what makes participation easier. Provide both private and public routes where appropriate.
Do not ask students to report sensitive experiences unless the school has a safe process for receiving and acting on that information. Data collection creates responsibility. A survey should not gather more than the institution can protect and use responsibly.
Close the loop. If students raise an issue, explain what the school learned, what it can change, what it cannot change and what will be reviewed later. Consultation without visible follow-through can teach learners that participation has no effect.
19. Wellbeing data need careful interpretation
A wellbeing score can be useful for identifying a pattern, but it should not become a diagnosis or a complete representation of a student. Survey responses depend on wording, timing, willingness to disclose and the population responding.
Keep non-response visible. If only some students complete a survey, the average describes respondents, not automatically everyone. If a measure changes, do not pretend the results are directly comparable without checking the design.
Combine aggregate information with practical observations: attendance patterns, participation, workload, access to support, reported safety concerns and student work where relevant. Collect only information with a legitimate educational purpose and protect privacy.

20. Avoid turning wellbeing into another performance target
If a school is judged by one wellbeing indicator, staff may feel pressure to maximise the reported number. Students may learn which answers are preferred. Difficult but important issues may become inconvenient. The measure can begin distorting the purpose.
Use indicators as prompts for inquiry. A lower sense-of-belonging score should trigger questions about where, for whom and under what conditions. A higher score should not end the investigation if other evidence shows exclusion or unsafe participation.
Do not promise that every learner will feel positive every day. Education includes challenge, disagreement and disappointment. The school’s responsibility is to make those experiences safe, understandable, proportionate and connected to growth.
21. Wellbeing and educational equity intersect
The same school process may be easy for one learner and difficult for another because of language, disability, transport, family obligations, prior knowledge or other conditions. A wellbeing review should therefore ask who can use the support route and who disappears before reaching it.
A universal wellbeing programme can be helpful but may not address a specific barrier. Combine a clear common offer with targeted support where evidence indicates a need. Do not make participation in a universal activity the test of whether a learner deserves more specific help.

22. Transitions are wellbeing events as well as academic events
Moving class, school, course or educational stage changes routines, relationships, expectations and support routes. A learner may understand the academic content but not know how the new system works.
Transition support should make the hidden system visible: where to go, how work is organised, how to request help, what happens after absence, who owns different questions and which expectations differ from the previous stage.
Pass forward useful support information without freezing a reputation. Describe current successful strategies, learner capability and remaining needs. Allow the receiving teacher to form new observations.
23. Staff wellbeing affects the system students experience
Student support depends partly on adults having enough time, clarity and coordination to respond consistently. A school that adds a new wellbeing initiative while increasing administrative overload may undermine the capacity needed to deliver it.
Protect role clarity. Teachers should know what they are expected to notice, what they can handle, what should be referred and what documentation is necessary. Remove duplicate reporting where possible.
When planning a student-support change, include the adult workflow. Who receives the concern? Who follows up? What happens if that person is absent? How is the classroom teacher informed of the educational adjustment they need to make without receiving unnecessary private information?
24. A practical school wellbeing review
Select one ordinary part of the student journey: starting the day, independent work, homework, assessment week, returning after absence, group work, digital communication or transition. Define what safe and usable participation should look like.
Map the process from the learner’s perspective. What information is given? Which choices exist? Where might uncertainty accumulate? How is help requested? What happens after an error? Which parts require family support? Which parts require specialist support?
Gather modest evidence: a sample of student accounts, teacher observations, relevant workload or participation information, and examples of the actual instructions or tasks. Avoid collecting sensitive personal data simply because it might be interesting.
Identify one avoidable barrier and one protective condition to strengthen. For example, simplify the return-from-absence process and preserve a trusted adult check-in. Or coordinate assignment deadlines and keep challenging independent work.
Define the review question. Did more learners re-enter the task? Did confusion decrease? Did learning quality remain strong? Did help-seeking become more specific? Did the change create additional burden? Look for unintended effects as well as the intended outcome.
If the problem requires clinical, safeguarding or specialist expertise, the school review should improve the route to that expertise rather than invent an educational substitute.
25. A student-facing wellbeing compass
A learner can use four questions without needing to diagnose themselves: What is making participation difficult right now? Which part can I act on myself? Which part needs help from another person? Who is the correct person for that help?
For an academic difficulty, the next action may be to identify the exact step that is unclear. For a workload issue, it may be to clarify priorities. For a conflict, it may be to use the school’s appropriate support route. For a serious safety concern, the learner should seek immediate help from an appropriate trusted adult or emergency service according to the situation.
The compass is not a clinical tool. Its purpose is to prevent a large, vague sense of “school is impossible” from obscuring the next usable route where one exists.
26. What a healthy educational system should make easier
It should be easier to understand what is expected, begin worthwhile work, make a mistake without humiliation, ask a specific question, receive correction, recover after absence, participate without being socially erased, and reach appropriate support when ordinary teaching is not enough.
These conditions do not guarantee wellbeing or academic success. Students live complex lives, and schools control only part of the system. But education should avoid adding unnecessary confusion, exclusion or overload to difficulties it cannot fully control.
The best wellbeing work is therefore not always a special event. Much of it is embedded in the ordinary architecture of school: the task, the relationship, the timetable, the correction, the route to help and the possibility of returning tomorrow with a credible next step.
