Translation is the reconstruction of a representation so that another receiver can recover as much of the intended meaning and function as possible through a different code, culture or format.

1. Translation Begins Because Codes Differ
A token works only if the receiver can decode its system.

This is not literal mathematics. It is a reminder that translation quality depends on more than vocabulary substitution.

Without translation, knowledge remains trapped inside language communities.
Translation lets science, literature, law, religion, engineering, history and everyday experience cross boundaries.
It allows one civilisation to inherit representations produced by another.
It turns separate archives into partially shared human memory.
Translation expands the number of minds a representation can reach without requiring those minds to share the original code.
38. Final Thesis
Media makes reality portable.
Translation makes that portability cross boundaries that the original token cannot cross alone.
Language changes. Culture changes. Format changes. Receiver capability changes.
So the target token cannot always preserve the source by copying its surface.
It must preserve the load-bearing meaning.
The best translation is not the token that looks most like the source. It is the token that lets a different receiver reconstruct the right relationship with the same underlying meaning while keeping the road back to the source visible.
