Use the Top 100 SEC G1 Vocabulary List: Essential in small cycles. The best system is simple enough to repeat: diagnose → understand → retrieve → compare → use → check → revisit.
The G1 Vocabulary Learning Loop
Diagnose: test before studying. Understand: learn the relevant meaning and grammar. Retrieve: close the list and recall. Compare: distinguish nearby words. Use: write or say something new. Check: diagnose the error. Revisit: return after time has passed.
1. Start with Ten Words
One hundred words should not feel like one task. Work with ten. Mark each secure, uncertain or unfamiliar. Spend time where the gap is visible.
2. Learn Meaning with Grammar
Record the word class, one natural phrase or preposition, and one plain-English explanation. For example, learn reliable source, reluctant to, contribute to and concern about.
3. Retrieve Before Rereading
Cover the notes. Use a meaning cue or a sentence with a blank. Attempt the answer first, then check. The effort to reconstruct the word is part of learning.
4. Use Cloze Practice Carefully
Because K100 Language Use includes vocabulary in cloze format, practise choosing words from context. But do not let every exercise become multiple choice. After the cloze, explain why the correct answer fits and write one fresh sentence.
5. Compare Nearby Words
Ask what changes between adequate and suitable, concern and complaint, practical and beneficial, hesitate and reluctant. Vocabulary becomes useful when boundaries become clearer.
6. Learn Collocations
Words travel with other words. Learn urgent request, practical solution, reliable evidence, temporary measure, vulnerable group, take a precaution and show initiative.
7. Move into Writing
Write one situational sentence, one narrative sentence and one explanatory sentence. Do not force the same word into all three. The task is to decide whether the meaning survives the change of context.
8. Move into Speaking
Give a thirty-second response using one or two target words naturally. Then paraphrase the same idea in simpler language. This trains fluency without making vocabulary a performance.
9. Keep an Error Ledger
| Error type | Question | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Did I choose the wrong idea? | Return to a plain-English definition and contrast. |
| Grammar | Is the form or sentence pattern wrong? | Practise one correct transformation. |
| Collocation | Does the combination sound unnatural? | Record a natural partnership. |
| Register | Is the word too casual or formal? | Write a version for another audience. |
| Overclaiming | Is the word stronger than the evidence? | Use a weaker, more accurate expression. |
10. Space the Revisiting
A simple pattern is later the same day, two days later, one week later and two weeks later. Failed words return sooner. Secure words can wait longer.

A 25-Minute Session
Minutes 0–5: retrieve ten old words. 5–10: repair failed meanings or patterns. 10–15: learn five new words. 15–20: mix old and new words in cloze or contrast tasks. 20–25: write or speak on a fresh topic with the list closed.
Four-Week Example Cycle
Week 1: Sets 1–3. Week 2: Sets 4–6 plus review from Week 1. Week 3: Sets 7–10 plus interleaved retrieval. Week 4: no new words: use cloze, comprehension, writing and oral transfer to find what still fails.
Mastery Rule
A word moves into maintenance when the learner can explain it, recognise it in context, retrieve it after a delay, use it with correct grammar and collocation, and reject it when another word fits better.
Ownership Rule
