Is My Child Ready for Secondary 1?

Three secondary students review textbooks and notes together at a classroom table.

Secondary 1 readiness is not only a matter of PSLE results. The transition also asks for greater independence, faster switching between subjects, stronger reading stamina, more abstract thinking, better organisation, and enough foundational control that new material does not immediately expose old gaps.

Before Secondary 1, check whether the child can follow instructions without constant prompting, organise work across several subjects, recover after not understanding something immediately, and manage core English and Mathematics with reasonable independence. The aim is not perfection; it is enough stability that the child has room to adapt when the new environment becomes more demanding.
