My Child Knows Vocabulary but Does Not Use It — What Should We Fix?

If your child knows vocabulary meanings but does not use the words, the weakness is probably productive vocabulary rather than recognition. Knowing a word when it appears on a list or page is easier than retrieving it at the right moment, choosing the correct form, placing it naturally with other words, and using it accurately in a sentence.

Reduce the number of new words temporarily and increase use. Ask the child to retrieve the word without seeing it, explain it in their own language, compare it with nearby words, build several sentences, and use it again after a delay. Productive control grows when words are repeatedly generated, not merely recognised.

Start with the Vocabulary Learning Hub. For the wider language route, use the English Learning Hub.
