Phase Diagnostics & Early-Warning: How to Tell Where You Are Before Collapse

Once Phase is understood as survivability physics, the most important question becomes:

Where is the system right now inside the Phase Survivability Band (PSB)? And which drift is silently pulling it toward a cliff?

This article defines the instrument panel for individuals (Z0), institutions (Z1), and civilisations (Z2).

1. The two silent killers you must always measure

There are only two ways systems die quietly:

DriftWhat it doesWhat it looks like
Abundance Hollowing Drift (AHD)Thins regeneration from belowLow fertility, skill decay, pipeline shrinkage
Lattice Brittleness Drift (LBD)Removes slack and diversity from aboveOver-centralisation, narrow ladders, monoculture careers

Most collapses begin years before any crisis through these two drifts.

2. Universal Phase instrument panel

These six indicators exist at all zoom levels:

GaugeWhat to ask
Load / HR-BW ratioIs demand rising faster than regeneration?
Replacement latencyHow long before a new operator becomes reliable?
Pipeline diversityHow many independent lanes exist per core function?
Slack marginHow much unused capacity exists?
Attrition vs replenishmentAre losses being replaced faster than memory half-life?
COEE riskAre any pipelines failing to reproduce themselves?

When any two of these trend negative together, the system has entered Phase-1 drift.

3. Z0 – Individual warning signs

DriftEarly indicators
AHDLoss of sharpness, avoidance of challenge, skill decay
LBDOver-rigid routines, no slack time, identity monoculture
PFP riskSlow recovery, increasing micro-failures, burnout

4. Z1 – Organisation / City / Nation warning signs

DriftEarly indicators
AHDHiring freezes, shrinking training ladders, skill gaps
LBDSingle-path careers, prestige bottlenecks, funding monoculture
PFP riskBacklogs, safety incidents, rising attrition

5. Z2 – Civilisation warning signs

DriftEarly indicators
AHDFertility collapse, operator thinning, apprenticeship loss
LBDElite concentration, mono-sector economies
PFP riskTrust erosion, institutional failure, core organ thinning

6. Why early detection matters

Collapse rarely begins with war, plague, or disaster.

Those are AFT arrows.

The real collapse begins when:

  • AHD has hollowed the lattice
  • LBD has removed shock absorption
  • HR-BW has fallen below load
  • and COEE risk is already high

At that point, the arrow only reveals the fracture that already existed.

7. Control objective

Never let AHD and LBD coexist for long. Never allow replacement latency to exceed memory half-life. Never let HR-BW fall below load.

That is the whole Phase control problem.

The takeaway

Phase collapse is predictable before it happens.
Civilisation OS exists to keep systems inside the PSB — before arrows arrive.
