Yes. A student with an eligible American High School Diploma can apply to NUS, NTU and SMU in Singapore, but the diploma alone is not necessarily sufficient. The three universities use different standardised-test requirements, academic-record standards and programme prerequisites. NUS requires an accepted combination of Advanced Placement (AP) and/or SAT/ACT results for this admission category; NTU places particular emphasis on multiple AP examinations and their scores; and SMU evaluates American diploma applicants under its international-qualification route, including an accepted standardised test.
Families searching “American high school diploma NUS admission”, “NTU AP requirements 2027”, “SMU US high school SAT”, “can USA curriculum student study Singapore university” or “NUS AP Calculus BC compulsory” should use NUS’s American Diploma guidance, NTU’s October 2026 American High School Diploma rules and SMU’s international qualification information. A strong Grade 12 report does not by itself replace the AP or other external evidence explicitly required for the relevant route.
Did you know? The phrase “I have a 4.0 GPA” can conceal very different combinations of coursework, school grading and external examination evidence. An admissions office needs to understand what the diploma certifies, whether the school is properly recognised, how the student performs against a common external measure and whether the chosen degree’s prerequisite knowledge is present. The most productive preparation begins early—before the final Grade 12 semester—by checking exactly which AP subjects and test dates match the intended university programmes.

PART 1 OF 4
Start with the exact diploma, school accreditation and applicant category
An American High School Diploma is a distinct qualification from the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level, the International Baccalaureate Diploma or a Cambridge International A-Level certificate. Students holding an American diploma should select the correct international or American high-school category in each university’s application portal. Submitting under a generic or incorrect route can result in the wrong document checklist.
NTU’s published admission requirements distinguish accredited American High School Diplomas from High School Diplomas with AP. Its accreditation examples include Cognia, WASC, Middle States and other recognised school accreditation bodies. It also notes that independently taken AP examinations do not turn an unrelated schooling qualification into an accredited American diploma. Ask the school what certificate will be awarded and which body formally recognises it.
NUS requests the high-school diploma or current results, complete transcript and an explanation of the high school’s grading system alongside required standardised tests. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents who hold foreign qualifications should use the applicable NUS citizen/PR qualification category; the admission process and any Mother Tongue Language requirement may differ from those for international applicants.
SMU has its own international or other qualifications process and names the USA/American High School Diploma among qualifications it considers. A family applying to all three universities should use three separate current checklists instead of assuming that submitting one SAT score or Grade 12 transcript completes all applications.
A practical parent–student check
- Confirm the precise graduating certificate and school accreditation.
- Choose the correct category for the diploma and citizenship.
- Collect Grade 11 and 12 transcripts and grading-system information.
- Build a separate admissions checklist for each university.
Under NUS’s published standardised test table, acceptable routes include at least five AP examinations, or SAT plus at least three AP examinations, or ACT with Writing plus at least three AP examinations. NUS’s table specifies minimum AP scores of 3 for consideration and requires AP Calculus BC for programmes other than Law; additional programme prerequisites still apply. A student cannot assume a strong SAT score eliminates the AP component of this international-qualification route.
NTU’s current American Diploma page says most international applicants require at least five AP Tests with scores of 4 or 5, while Singapore Citizens or PRs may apply with at least three AP Tests under its stated conditions. It specifies AP Calculus BC for Applied Computing in Finance, Economics and Data Science, Engineering and many Science programmes, and AP Physics C for programmes that require Physics. The exact applicant-category and programme requirements control.
SMU’s international qualifications page states that applicants with an American diploma must present at least one accepted standardised test under the published rules, such as SAT, ACT, IELTS Academic, TOEFL, C1 Advanced or PTE Academic, at the required scores. That is a different external-test structure from NUS’s AP combinations and NTU’s AP count. Check the individual SMU degree’s Maths and other subject prerequisites before finalising courses.
Minimum scores are just minimum application conditions. Admissions remain competitive, and applicants for certain professional or specialist programmes may need interviews, portfolios, selection assessments or earlier completion of their final qualifications. Choose tests that support both formal eligibility and meaningful subject preparation, rather than collecting the largest list of acronyms.
A practical parent–student check
- For NUS, verify an accepted AP-only or SAT/ACT-plus-AP combination.
- For NTU, check the relevant citizenship-category AP count and scores.
- For SMU, select an accepted standardised test and meet its thresholds.
- Match AP Calculus, Physics and other subjects to actual degree prerequisites.

PART 3 OF 4
Plan the Grade 12 transcript, AP score release and the application calendar
American high schools may release semester transcripts before the final diploma is issued, while AP results arrive separately from College Board. Universities therefore ask for different documents at different stages. A family should know when Grade 12 Semester 1 results, final transcripts, graduation confirmation and AP score reports will become available.
NTU currently asks final-year American Diploma applicants to apply using at least Grade 12 Semester 1 results and then submit their final transcript within three days of the official release. Its published 2027 schedule sets a 15 July 2027 AP-score deadline. NTU also states that it makes decisions based on actual examination results and does not issue provisional offers based purely on predicted or pending grades for this qualification route.
NUS requires official AP scores to be sent through College Board and uploaded to the applicant portal, and publishes separate dates for the appropriate academic year. Its 2026 application page contained a July 2026 AP submission deadline; do not copy that date into a 2027 plan without checking the next NUS cycle. NUS also requires official SAT or ACT score transmission where those tests are submitted.
Applicants awaiting graduation should pay particular attention to Medicine, Dentistry, Law or other programmes with early selection. The NUS American Diploma page distinguishes course eligibility when actual high-school results are not yet available, and NTU sets earlier qualification-result dates for certain programmes. A late AP report is not necessarily a defect a parent can correct after the deadline.
A practical parent–student check
- Record school-term transcript, graduation and AP result-release dates.
- Follow NTU’s current Grade 12 and AP submission deadlines.
- Send official test reports through the awarding bodies where required.
- Check earlier result and selection deadlines for specialist degrees.

External tests are not just pieces of admissions paperwork. AP Calculus BC can develop the mathematical foundations needed for first-year quantitative courses; AP Physics C can prepare a student for mechanically or electrically oriented Engineering topics; AP Chemistry and Biology may be relevant to other scientific programmes. But a subject’s name does not guarantee sufficient readiness: students need to understand the concepts and solve unfamiliar problems independently.
A student hoping to study Computer Science might want to combine mathematics with programming projects that show debugging, careful reasoning and sustained interest. Someone drawn to Economics may benefit from calculus, statistics and the habit of interrogating data. A Humanities applicant needs strong reading and writing alongside whichever external tests the universities require. Match subjects to genuine planned degrees rather than take them simply because successful applicants on the internet once did.
Review the actual first-year modules of two or three intended degrees. What is assumed on the first day? Can the student explain a derivative, an experimental design or a written argument without memorised phrases? A focused learning bridge during Grade 12 is more valuable than waiting until a difficult first university semester to discover missing prerequisites.
Our Cambridge International A-Level university guide and IB Diploma admissions guide cover the other international pathways. The degree-choice guide helps students select what they want to learn before making an exam-preparation strategy. The diploma gets the application started; a coherent academic foundation helps the student enjoy what comes after admission.
A practical parent–student check
- Choose AP subjects aligned with named university programme prerequisites.
- Review first-year university curricula for missing foundations.
- Use external tests to demonstrate real learning, not only eligibility.
- Keep the student’s career interests, workload and available preparation time in balance.
