Why Does My Child Write Answers in the Wrong Place on a Worksheet? | Bukit Timah Tuition Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know that a correct answer beside the wrong question can hide two different problems? For Bukit Timah parents, first check whether the child solved the intended task but misplaced the response, or followed the wrong question altogether. The repair depends on which happened.

Take one recent worksheet and trace a single response from question number to working to answer space. Ask your child to point to the task they meant to answer. Keep the page as it is so the tutor can see whether the break occurred while reading, moving between pages or copying the final result.

Try a small placement routine on the next suitable practice task: locate the question label, locate its response area, then answer and reconnect the two. Follow the actual worksheet instructions. Do not turn a helpful home cue into an assumed examination rule.

SECTION 1 OF 5

Check whether the error is meaning or placement

If the student explains the right question and their working fits it, inspect where the result was written. If the working answers a different request, return to task interpretation. “Be more careful” does not tell the child which action needs to change.

Ask whether the pattern appears with subparts such as 3(a) and 3(b), separate answer booklets, a new page or a return after skipping a question. That observation can help the tutor choose a realistic practice format.

Do not infer a diagnosis from one messy worksheet. Repeated difficulty across different tasks deserves a conversation with the teacher or tutor about the support needed. Keep the discussion grounded in the actual pages.

SECTION 2 OF 5

Reconnect the question, working and response area

Before beginning a practice item, identify its full label, including the subpart. If working is on a separate sheet, use that label so the route back remains visible. Follow any specific instructions governing rough work or separate responses.

When returning after a skipped question, reread the label and requested quantity. Do not assume that the next empty space belongs to the next question attempted. The existing skip-and-return guide explains how to preserve an unresolved task.

During teaching, the tutor can model this movement aloud once, then ask the child to perform it. Record whether the student succeeds without a placement reminder. An adult pointing to every answer box can make the finished page look more independent than it was.

SECTION 3 OF 5

Practise with two linked subparts

Original teaching illustration: Question 4(a) asks for the total cost of three books priced at $4, $5 and $6. Question 4(b) asks for their mean price. The total is $15; the mean is $5 because $15 ÷ 3 = $5.

If the child writes $5 beside 4(a) and $15 beside 4(b), ask them to match each amount to its meaning before moving either response. Correctly calculated numbers have still been assigned to the wrong requests.

Then try a changed example with two pencils priced at $2 and $4: total $6, mean $3. Use mean only when it has been taught. A younger learner can practise placement with two separate familiar tasks instead of an untaught concept.

SECTION 4 OF 5

Keep correction separate from assessment assumptions

For an ordinary practice page, preserve the misplaced response and add the agreed correction clearly. The tutor should be able to see what happened. Do not insist on a full rewrite merely to remove evidence of the original error.

For school assessments or examination practice, follow the actual instructions about answer spaces, additional pages, question labels and corrections. Ask the teacher if a direction is unclear. There is no universal rule here guaranteeing credit or a fixed mark loss for misplaced answers.

At secondary level, PG1–PG3 identify Posting Groups and G1–G3 identify subject levels. They are not interchangeable labels. Match formal practice to the student’s actual subject, examination year and candidate type, using the official documents linked below.

SECTION 5 OF 5

Reduce prompts and check a fresh page

Use a short practice set with the same sort of page movement that caused the difficulty. Watch where the student loses the connection. If they can place answers correctly only on a familiar layout, vary the format gently after teaching the routine.

Keep a brief record: the original placement error, the cue used, and the later independent attempt. If placement improves but interpretation remains weak, the learning plan still needs reading or subject teaching.

eduKateSG’s reference describes premium 3-pax Mathematics teaching through close observation, explanation and practice. Bring the original worksheet to a consultation so the starting problem is visible. Confirm appropriate support rather than assuming every subject or arrangement is offered.

Bring one useful example to a consultation

Bring recent schoolwork, the child’s first attempt and the help provided. Ask what needs teaching next and how independent use will be checked. Confirm current subject coverage, suitable 3-pax placement and available arrangements directly.

For examination practice, check the actual subject, level, examination year and candidate type; do not assume every subject is offered at every level.
