Should the Bars in a Bar Chart Touch? | Bukit Timah Maths and Science Tuition Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know that bars for separate categories in a bar chart are normally drawn with gaps, while bars in a histogram represent adjacent numerical intervals and typically touch? The spacing communicates what kind of data the graph contains; it is not only decoration.

For Bukit Timah parents checking Maths or Science tuition, ask the child what each horizontal position represents. If the labels are categories such as apple, banana and orange, use separated bars. If the graph groups a continuous measurement into adjoining intervals, check whether the taught task calls for a histogram.

Keep the question, data table and first graph together. Circle one gap or touching edge and ask what it tells the reader. Then give a fresh categorical data set and an interval data set so the child must choose the graph rather than copy its appearance.

SECTION 1 OF 5

Identify categories or numerical intervals

A bar chart compares distinct categories. The space between bars helps show that one category ends before the next begins, even if the categories are arranged in a logical order.

A histogram groups numerical observations into class intervals. Adjoining intervals cover neighbouring portions of a numerical scale, so the bars typically meet.

Read the headings before drawing. Labels such as “red, blue, green” suggest categories; intervals such as “0–10, 10–20, 20–30” require careful attention to boundaries and the graph type requested.

SECTION 2 OF 5

Do not decide from appearance alone

A chart with rectangles is not automatically a bar chart, and touching rectangles are not enough to prove a valid histogram. The underlying data and axis meaning decide the representation.

Check whether the horizontal axis names categories or displays a numerical scale. On a histogram, the horizontal widths have quantitative meaning; on a basic bar chart, the bar width is usually a consistent visual container for each category.

If the task explicitly says “draw a bar chart,” follow the expected bar-chart conventions for that course. Do not replace it with a histogram because the values happen to be numbers.

SECTION 3 OF 5

Build one original contrast pair

Original bar-chart illustration: a class chooses among four books. Each book title is a separate category, so four equal-width bars with consistent gaps can compare the vote counts.

Original histogram illustration: reaction times are grouped into adjoining intervals such as 0.20–0.25 seconds and 0.25–0.30 seconds. The intervals lie next to each other on a continuous scale, so the representation is different.

Use only intervals and frequency conventions that have been taught. Unequal class widths can require frequency density rather than raw frequency height, which is a later issue and should not be introduced casually.

SECTION 4 OF 5

Check scale, width and labels as separate decisions

A correct gap does not fix a misleading vertical scale. Label axes, include units where relevant and use equal numerical intervals unless the task teaches a different convention.

For a basic bar chart, keep bar widths consistent and gaps visually consistent. Plot heights against the scale accurately rather than estimating from the data number alone.

Add a clear title if required and confirm that every category is represented once. These checks prevent the spacing lesson from hiding other graph-reading errors.

SECTION 5 OF 5

Test whether the graph choice transfers

Give one categorical table and one grouped measurement table without naming the graph. Ask the student to choose, draw a small sketch and justify whether the bars should touch.

Keep the first attempt and the fresh choice. Useful progress appears when the explanation refers to categories or adjoining intervals—not when the child says only that one graph “looks like the example.”

For PSLE, lower-secondary or SEC work, follow the wording and graph conventions in the actual subject and examination-year materials. Mathematics, Science and Humanities may use charts for different purposes.

Bring one useful example to a consultation

Bring the child’s original attempt, the exact task and any help already used. Ask which idea or decision needs teaching, how a fresh independent attempt will be checked, and whether a suitable 3-pax placement and subject arrangement are available.

Match support to the actual course

The examples are original teaching illustrations. The routines are practical educational guidance, not measured outcomes, grade promises or universal marking rules. Match every task to what has been taught and to the school’s instructions.
