Should My Child Use a Calculator for Tuition Homework? | Bukit Timah Parent Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know that calculator use can be appropriate for one tuition task and unhelpful for the next? For Bukit Timah families, begin with the purpose of the homework and its instructions. A task checking arithmetic fluency needs a different approach from a problem where the important work is choosing a relationship and interpreting the result.

Ask the tutor to label the intended condition: calculate without a device, use an approved calculator, or try independently before checking. Do not quietly change that condition at home. If your child cannot complete the task as set, record where they became stuck so the tutor sees the real difficulty.

When a calculator is permitted, ask your child to write the mathematical expression, estimate the result and explain what the displayed number means. A correct display does not show whether the right quantities were entered. Keep the calculation, units and final response connected.

SECTION 1 OF 5

Clarify what the task is checking

A worksheet can test several different skills. The tutor may want to see number facts, written computation, method choice, calculator entry or interpretation. Ask which matters most before deciding that every calculation should be done mentally or every answer checked electronically.

For a younger learner, a calculator might help explore a pattern during a supervised activity while being unsuitable for the independent arithmetic check that follows. Permission for one activity does not automatically carry over to another. Keep the learning conditions visible.

SECTION 2 OF 5

Write the relationship before pressing keys

Suppose three items cost $4.80 each. Writing 3 × $4.80 identifies the relationship before the device produces $14.40. The child should be able to explain why multiplication fits and why the result represents a total price.

For longer expressions, brackets and operation order matter. If a calculator answer surprises the child, compare the written expression with the entry before assuming the formula is wrong. The tutor can check whether the obstacle is mathematical understanding or use of the device.

SECTION 3 OF 5

Use estimation as a separate check

Three items at about $5 each should cost about $15. An answer near $144 deserves another look. Estimation gives the child a reason to question an input error; pressing the same sequence again may simply reproduce it.

A reasonable result is not proof of a correct method. Check the quantities, operation and units as well. Encourage the child to explain both why an answer is plausible and how the calculation follows from the question.

Match examination practice to current rules

For exam-style homework, check the relevant subject document, paper instructions and examination year. SEAB publishes an approved-calculator list, but approval of a model does not mean a calculator is permitted in every paper or task.

Use the current PSLE format directory or the appropriate secondary syllabus rather than relying on an old worksheet heading. SEC begins in 2027. PG1–PG3 are Posting Groups; G1–G3 describe subject levels. Confirm the child’s actual subject and level before choosing practice conditions.

Report the support honestly

If your child used a calculator on a task intended to be completed without one, tell the tutor. Keep the attempt and explain what prompted the change. That information can help identify arithmetic that needs teaching without turning the discussion into blame.

eduKateSG’s reference Mathematics guide describes premium 3-pax teaching with guided and independent practice. Bring one task and the exact calculation difficulty to a consultation. Confirm current subject support and availability after the starting position is clear.
