How Can My Child Check Spelling Without Stopping Every Sentence? | Bukit Timah Parent Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know that a spelling check can be a planned part of writing rather than an interruption after every word? For Bukit Timah families, ask the tutor whether the task is supported drafting, spelling practice or an independent assessment. The permitted help and the right checking routine depend on that purpose.

For a supported draft, agree how the child should mark an uncertain word and return to it. After finishing a manageable sentence or paragraph, check a few selected words using an allowed reference. Keep the first attempt visible so the tutor can see both the idea and the spelling difficulty.

If the child cannot continue because many words are uncertain, bring that example to the tutor. The next step may be targeted word teaching or a smaller writing task. A proofreading routine helps organise a check; it does not replace learning how the troublesome words are spelt.

SECTION 1 OF 5

Agree the task conditions first

A dictionary or spelling list may be appropriate for a supported draft, while an independent check may require the child to work without it. Ask the teacher or tutor what assistance is allowed. Record any help that affects how the work should be interpreted.

If the task is a spelling exercise, accurate production of the target words is the central purpose. If it is generating a first draft, the tutor may choose to separate idea development and selected corrections. Avoid imposing one rule on every activity.

SECTION 2 OF 5

Choose a simple way to mark uncertainty

Agree a small, clear mark beside an uncertain word on practice work, where allowed. The child can make a reasonable attempt, mark it and keep the sentence moving. Return at the planned checking point rather than leaving the uncertainty unresolved.

The mark should help the child find the word again. It should not become an extra system that takes longer than writing. For a younger child, the tutor may prefer a much shorter sentence and immediate teaching of one necessary word.

SECTION 3 OF 5

Check a small set accurately

Begin with the words marked uncertain and any repeated error the tutor has prioritised. Use the permitted reference to compare the whole spelling carefully. Ask the child to identify the part that changed, then write the corrected word in context.

For example, a child who writes “becaus” can notice the missing final e in “because”. Check that the word still serves the intended sentence. Copying a correction once is useful follow-through, but does not prove that the child can retrieve it independently later.

SECTION 4 OF 5

Keep editing separate from rewriting everything

Retain the original draft when it helps the tutor understand the process. Correct selected words clearly rather than requiring an entire page to be recopied for appearance. A final presentation task may have its own instructions; follow those separately.

Digital spelling suggestions are also assistance. If they are permitted, ask the child to explain which word fits the sentence. Tell the tutor when software supplied the correction, especially if the draft is being used as evidence of independent writing.

SECTION 5 OF 5

Ask whether the word appears correctly later

Bring the first spelling, correction and a later fresh sentence using the word when appropriate. Ask whether the difficulty is word knowledge, retrieval during composition or checking. The existing Primary 2 guide explores spelling and sentence construction in greater depth.

The aim is a workable writing rhythm: express the idea, return to selected uncertainties and learn from the corrections. Confirm the relevant subject programme at consultation. Bring one actual paragraph rather than a general report that spelling is “careless”.

Checked 10 October 2026. The home routines are practical suggestions to discuss with the teacher or tutor. Follow the actual task instructions and relevant subject and examination-year documents.

Arrange a parent–student consultation after the starting position is clear. Bring the task, first attempt and the point where help was needed.
