Do I Need H2 Biology to Study Medicine at NUS or NTU?

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

No, H2 Biology is not strictly required to apply for the Singapore-Cambridge A-Level admission route to Medicine at either NUS or NTU. Both universities require H2 Chemistry together with H2 Biology or H2 Physics, subject to their published qualification-specific standards. For NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, the A-Level guidance specifies a good H2 pass in Chemistry and an H2 pass in either Biology or Physics. NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine similarly lists an H2 pass in Chemistry and either Biology or Physics.

Parents researching “does medicine require H2 Biology Singapore”, “can I take H2 Physics instead of Biology for NUS Medicine”, “NTU Medicine JC subject requirements” or “which JC subject combination is best for medicine” should distinguish meeting minimum subject prerequisites from actually winning admission. These medical degrees are competitive and have additional selection processes. H2 Physics is a valid listed alternative for the second H2 science, but it does not guarantee admission or make the other preparation less important.

Did you know? A student who genuinely enjoys Physics may be better served by studying it deeply than choosing Biology solely because the intended career involves the human body. Equally, a student fascinated by biology may gain excellent preparation from H2 Biology. The right JC subject choice combines formal eligibility, learning strength, the school’s offered combinations and the ability to sustain serious work across all subjects.

PART 1 OF 4

Read what NUS and NTU actually require

Back to contents

Start with the exact degree: NUS Medicine and NTU LKCMedicine both lead to undergraduate medical degrees, but their application processes are managed separately. Reading an international medical-school checklist or an old forum post can introduce wrong assumptions about Singapore requirements.

For Singapore-Cambridge A-Level applicants, the official NUS Medicine page specifies a good H2 pass in Chemistry and an H2 pass in either Biology or Physics. Its page also explains general admission scoring, Project Work requirements for relevant cohorts and the role of non-academic assessments in selection.

NTU LKCMedicine’s current entry-requirements page lists an H2 pass in Chemistry and H2 Biology or Physics. It also details additional application components, including the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT), personal statement, referee reports and potential Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). Test validity windows, deadlines and supporting documents should be checked for the application year.

The academic alternatives are clear; the complete admissions assessment is more complicated. Make two columns labelled NUS and NTU, and copy the specific current requirements from each medical school’s own website. Students can then decide which subjects to take without confusing entry eligibility with selection competitiveness.

A practical parent–student check

  • Keep H2 Chemistry on the checklist for the A-Level route.
  • Confirm the listed H2 Biology or H2 Physics alternative.
  • Read all non-academic and assessment steps for each university.
  • Check application and examination dates for the actual intake.

PART 2 OF 4

Choose H2 Biology or H2 Physics using real readiness

Back to contents

H2 Biology trains students to interpret living systems, connect processes, analyse evidence and explain mechanisms. H2 Physics develops quantitative models, structured problem-solving and explanations of physical relationships. Both can contribute to future scientific thinking, though the content and weekly demands are quite different.

Ask the student which subject they enjoy studying when the mark is not the immediate reward. Do they love tracing a biological mechanism through several layers, or working from physical principles to explain a system? Interest alone is not sufficient, but it matters when the workload becomes substantial.

The student’s Secondary 4 foundations also deserve attention. A learner who finds physics calculations challenging because algebra, graphs or units are weak may need to rebuild those connections before H2 Physics. A learner who remembers biology terms but struggles to explain unfamiliar experimental results may need more work on evidence and causal reasoning before H2 Biology.

Do not overlook school-specific JC subject-offering rules. Some colleges set prerequisites for taking particular H2 subjects, and not every timetable combination is possible. Ask the college what it will offer to the next cohort and whether H2 Biology or Physics can be paired with Chemistry, Mathematics and the student’s contrasting subject.

A practical parent–student check

  • Compare genuine interest in the kind of questions each H2 subject asks.
  • Review strengths in experimental reasoning, mathematics and explanation.
  • Check JC prerequisites and actual timetable options.
  • Choose a combination that permits sustained learning, not only formal eligibility.

PART 3 OF 4

Understand the admissions work beyond subject choice

Back to contents

Medicine involves responsibility, teamwork, communication, scientific judgment and learning with patients as well as performance in examinations. Meeting a subject requirement means the applicant may be eligible to apply; it does not mean they have demonstrated all the qualities the medical school is assessing.

NTU LKCMedicine presently requires applicants to follow its UCAT route and provide personal statements and referee information, with shortlisted students potentially attending MMIs. NUS Medicine’s A-Level page does not require UCAT as a supplementary qualification for that route; it publishes its own selection and application instructions. This difference is another reason not to treat the two application processes as identical.

A student interested in medicine should explore the work carefully, through appropriate approved school opportunities, volunteering, reading and conversations with medical professionals. The purpose is to understand what being a doctor entails, not to manufacture a dramatic admissions story. Record authentic experiences and explain what they taught you.

It is also useful to have a wider academic map. A passion for life sciences, patient care, biomedical engineering or public health can connect to different degrees with different entry prerequisites and careers. Build realistic alternative pathways without treating medicine as the only respectable result.

A practical parent–student check

  • Read each school’s selection and interview instructions.
  • Distinguish NUS and NTU requirements instead of merging them.
  • Reflect on genuine service, teamwork and communication experiences.
  • Explore related science and healthcare degrees as distinct paths.

PART 4 OF 4

Make the JC decision with a complete timetable and a backup plan

Back to contents

Imagine two students. One is steadily strong in Chemistry and Physics, enjoys solving unfamiliar quantitative problems and has little enthusiasm for intensive Biology content. The other excels in Chemistry and Biology but would be taking Physics mainly to satisfy the expectations of friends. Both can consider Medicine under the published H2 subject alternatives; each should build the timetable they can actually learn from.

Write down the intended JC combination and check all requirements with the JC and both medical schools. Then list three things to improve during the next academic term: a scientific reasoning habit, one foundational weakness and one purposeful experience that helps the student understand healthcare work more deeply.

If students change their degree interests later, the chosen science pair can also influence other programmes. Use our H2 Mathematics for engineering and computing guide for mathematical pathways and JC Arts or Science guide for the overall subject-choice decision.

Medicine begins with curiosity about people, evidence and responsibility. Choosing the right H2 science is one part of a much larger journey. The strongest plan is academically sound, honest about the student’s interests and grounded in current official admission rules rather than hearsay.

A practical parent–student check

  • Compare H2 Biology and Physics within the whole JC combination.
  • Verify academic and additional admission requirements for each university.
  • Plan targeted improvement, not only higher predicted grades.
  • Keep other possible degree pathways visible.
