Double Degree or Double Major: Which Should I Choose? | Singapore University Course Planning

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Choose between a double degree and a double major by comparing the qualification, curriculum, access conditions, study time and purpose of the second discipline. At NUS, a double degree leads to two different degrees, while a double major is one degree with two majors. Confirm the terminology and requirements at each university rather than assuming every programme works the same way.

Did you know? NUS allows some courses in a double degree to count towards both degrees, subject to its rules. That does not make a double degree identical to studying a second major. Read the exact requirements for the proposed pair and ask which courses overlap, which remain distinct and how the study plan fits together.

Start with a simple question: what learning do I want from the second field, and why does this particular route provide it? Then compare the complete course plan, continuation conditions, fees, funding and space for internships or exchange. More qualifications are useful when their learning serves your aims and the commitment is workable.

SECTION 1 OF 5

What is the difference in the qualification?

Back to contents

NUS’s Registrar defines a double major as a single degree programme covering two majors. Its second major is a non-Honours major and is reflected in the transcript on completion. A double degree has requirements leading to two degrees.

Those definitions help you identify the outcome, but they do not settle which route suits you. Ask the university for the exact awards and requirements of the named programme, including cohort-specific conditions.

Put the programme’s official title beside its curriculum. Avoid treating an informal description such as studying two things as enough information to make the application.

Do I want two fields or two complete degree programmes?

Back to contents

Read the compulsory courses in both fields. Identify what excites you beyond their most familiar introductory topics. Which methods, projects and advanced questions do you want to spend time learning?

A student who wants sustained study in another discipline may find a double major worth investigating. Another may have a clear reason to complete two degree curricula. These are illustrative motivations, not recommendations for a particular pairing.

The eduKateSG Careers by Subject resource helps connect subjects with capabilities and real tasks. Use those connections to sharpen the purpose of the second field, then return to the university’s academic requirements.

SECTION 3 OF 5

How much work and time will the programme require?

Back to contents

Ask for a suggested study plan for your cohort. Check prerequisite sequences, course availability and how overlapping requirements are handled. Do not estimate completion time simply by adding or halving two advertised degree lengths.

NUS advises students to verify permissible student-initiated double-degree combinations with their home faculty. Restrictions matter before you invest time in a plan. Other universities and specially designed programmes may use different arrangements.

Put internships, exchange, projects and other priorities beside the course plan. Ask where each could fit and what approvals are needed. A manageable academic route should leave you able to use the learning opportunities you value.

SECTION 4 OF 5

What should I ask about costs and changing direction?

Back to contents

Obtain programme-specific advice about tuition fees, normal candidature, funding and any additional semesters. Check scholarship and tuition-grant terms directly. A familiar degree label does not establish the full cost.

Ask what happens if you later stop the second major or leave the double-degree programme. Which requirements would remain, what credits would count and what qualification could you complete? Seek the actual rules rather than assuming the route is easily reversible.

The university-major change guide helps prepare those questions. Knowing the review process can make an ambitious choice more informed.

A practical comparison before applying

Back to contents

Make five rows: exact award, compulsory learning, admission and continuation conditions, time and cost, and opportunities elsewhere in the week. Complete the rows for each named programme using official information.

If the second field is still unfamiliar, ask whether an available introductory course, elective or minor could help test it. Confirm access; an exploration option does not bypass programme entry conditions.

Take the university open-house checklist to your next enquiry. If your direction is unsettled, use the university-course exploration guide. A strong choice has a clear learning purpose and a credible plan for completing it.
