Why Edmund Spenser?
Edmund Spenser lived more than four centuries before modern cognitive science, artificial intelligence or contemporary English-language education.
We should therefore be careful.
We are not claiming that Spenser invented a scientific theory of cognition.
We are not claiming that The Faerie Queene validates modern cognitive research.
And the Edmund Spenser Series is certainly not an attempt to make Primary 1 students read a Renaissance epic.
Spenser matters here for another reason.
In the explanatory letter associated with The Faerie Queene, Spenser describes the broad purpose of the work as the formation of a person through “virtuous and gentle discipline.” His architecture uses characters, quests, places, mistakes, conflicts and consequences to give difficult qualities representational form. Holiness can become a knight.
Error can become something encountered.
Temperance can be tested.
Justice can be placed into situations.
Courtesy can be subjected to difficulty.
An abstraction that is difficult to point at directly becomes something the reader can encounter through representation.
That gives the Edmund Spenser Series its central principle:
Language can make invisible structure inspectable.
A person cannot point directly at an intention.
We cannot put an inference on a table.
We cannot physically hold a contradiction.
Perspective has no colour.
An argument has no weight.
Justice cannot simply be measured with a ruler.
Yet human beings can construct representations of all of them.
Language helps us do that.
And once something has been represented, we may be able to inspect it more carefully.
The English Mind Begins Much Earlier Than Argumentative Writing
Imagine a Primary 1 learner reading:
The dog ran home because it was raining.
It appears trivial.
It isn’t.
The learner has to connect printed marks with sounds, sounds with known words, words with grammatical relationships, those relationships with an event, and the word because with a causal relationship.
A miniature world has been reconstructed from language.
Now change the sentence:
The frightened dog ran home because it heard thunder.
The representation gains another layer.
The learner must infer something about an internal state.
Now change it again:
Although Mei thought the dog was frightened by the thunder, her brother believed that it had run home because it recognised their father’s car.
Now we have:
an event;
two observers;
two representations of the same event;
uncertainty;
alternative explanations;
and an implicit demand for evidence.
The machinery required for sophisticated Secondary English did not suddenly appear in Secondary 3.
Its earlier components were being assembled all along.
That is why this series begins at Primary 1.
P1 to Secondary 4: One Continuous Machine
Singapore’s current English Language curriculum provides an unusually useful anchor for thinking about this progression.
MOE describes Secondary English as building upon Primary English and developing increasingly sophisticated interaction, oracy and productive skills; close and critical processing of increasingly complex texts; and informed personal and critical responses in speaking, writing and representing. The same syllabus identifies listening and viewing, reading and viewing, speaking and representing, writing and representing, grammar and vocabulary across the progression from Primary into Secondary schooling. Primary 1: World → Word
At Primary 1, representation begins.
A word has to become reliably connected to something.
That “something” may be an object, action, quality, relationship, instruction or idea.
Before advanced comprehension, the learner needs sufficiently reliable access to the machinery underneath it:
sound;
decoding;
vocabulary;
syntax;
sentence meaning;
listening;
speaking;
reading;
writing.
When those foundations remain unstable, later reasoning becomes unnecessarily expensive.
The student may possess the intelligence to understand the idea but spend too much cognitive effort simply retrieving the words through which the idea is delivered.

Primary 2: Word → Event
Primary 2 extends the machinery.
Words begin to cooperate.
Individual sentences become sequences.

Then English becomes stranger.

Why did she hesitate?
Why did he lie?
How do you know he was worried if the text never says:
He was worried?
This is inference.
Behaviour becomes evidence for possible internal states.
Now language is not only representing the visible world.
It is beginning to support reasoning about the invisible one.
Event → Intention.
Primary 4: Intention → Perspective
The next major transition is that there may be more than one legitimate representation of the same event.
A disagreement may look completely different from each side.
A character may misunderstand another character.
A narrator may reveal only part of what happened.
Vocabulary choices can change how something is perceived.
This introduces:
Intention → Perspective.
The learner begins to discover a civilisationally important fact:
Shared reality does not guarantee identical representations of reality.
That does not mean every interpretation is equally good.
Evidence still matters.
But perspective becomes something the learner can begin to inspect.
Primary 5: Perspective → Influence
Now another development becomes increasingly visible.
Language does not merely represent.
It can act upon the receiver.
A writer can inform.
Request.
Reassure.
Warn.
Persuade.
Invite.
Challenge.
Frame.
Emphasise.
Omit.
The question changes from:
What does this mean?
to:
Why has someone chosen to say it this way to this particular audience?
That gives us:
Perspective → Influence.
English begins becoming strategic.
Primary 6: Influence → Integration
By Primary 6, something difficult happens.
The components must operate together.
Reading, vocabulary, grammar, inference, synthesis, writing, listening, speaking, editing and judgement can no longer remain isolated classroom abilities.
They must be coordinated under examination conditions.
This distinction is important to eduKateSG.
Knowing something is not identical to retrieving it.
Retrieving something is not identical to using it.
Using something once is not identical to transferring it.
And successful transfer is not identical to maintaining that capability over time.
Primary 6 therefore becomes:
Influence → Integration.
The system has to operate.

Secondary English begins to increase the burden placed upon interpretation.
The student can no longer rely indefinitely on:
“I think this means…”
The next question arrives:
What makes you think so?
Evidence becomes increasingly important.
Textual details need to support inference.
Claims need reasons.
Reasons need connections.
The learner begins distinguishing between:
possible interpretation;
supported interpretation;
and weak interpretation.

Secondary 2: Evidence → Competing Representations
Then the problem gets more difficult.
Sometimes several interpretations possess evidence.
Two writers can describe the same event differently.
Statistics can be framed differently.
An argument may contain a real fact but use it misleadingly.
A persuasive text may leave out something important.
The learner therefore needs more than retrieval.
They need comparison.
Which representation explains the available information better?
What assumptions does each require?
What evidence would change the conclusion?
Secondary 2 moves toward:
Evidence → Competing Representations.
Secondary 3: Representation → Argument
Argument is not simply disagreement.
A strong argument is constructed.
It selects claims.
Organises evidence.
Makes relationships explicit.
Anticipates objections.
Chooses examples.
Controls language.
And attempts to create a sufficiently coherent representation that another mind can inspect and evaluate it.
So one useful formulation is:
An argument is an engineered representation designed to survive examination by another mind.
That is why vocabulary alone cannot produce excellent argumentative writing.
The learner needs architecture.
Secondary 4: Argument → Judgement
By Secondary 4, the learner approaches the destination of this particular P1–S4 sequence.
Not perfect knowledge.
Not universal wisdom.
Not guaranteed correctness.
But increasingly independent judgement.
The student encounters a text, situation, claim or problem and asks:
What is being represented?
What is being asserted?
How is language shaping the representation?
What evidence supports it?
What evidence challenges it?
What has been omitted?
What assumptions are operating?
What alternatives exist?
What conclusion is defensible?
How strongly should that conclusion be stated?
And how should it be communicated to this receiver?
That is:
Argument → Judgement.
English as Representation
The first engine running through the Edmund Spenser Series is representation.
We encounter a world larger than what can physically be present before us.
English allows a student to access representations of:
places never visited;
people never met;
events long finished;
possible futures;
imaginary worlds;
instructions;
scientific explanations;
mathematical problems;
social relationships;
institutions;
rules;
arguments;
beliefs.
This ability is astonishingly ordinary.
A page containing marks can reconstruct something elsewhere inside a receiver.
But representation must be handled carefully.
Representation is not reality.
Representation is not cognition.
Representation is not truth.
Two representations of the same object may preserve different information.
A map useful to a train passenger may be poor for a land surveyor.
A summary can improve accessibility while eliminating detail.
A diagram may reveal a relationship that prose obscures.
A paragraph can preserve nuance that a diagram loses.
So one recurring lesson throughout the series is:
The quality of a representation depends partly on what the receiver needs to do with it.

English as Simulation
The second engine is simulation.
Consider what happens when a student reads:

English as Transmission
The third engine moves in the opposite direction.
Something exists within one person:
an observation;
instruction;
memory;
model;
plan;
question;
emotion;
argument.
Language allows some representation of it to move toward another receiver.

Internal state → representation → language → receiver → reconstruction
But the reconstruction is never automatically identical.
The receiver brings:
prior knowledge;
vocabulary;
expectations;
context;
attention;
culture;
assumptions.
This makes communication partly a receiver problem.
The sentence we intend to send is not necessarily the meaning another person receives.
Good English therefore requires increasingly sophisticated control over:
purpose;
audience;
context;
culture;
medium;
precision.

English as Instruction
There is another reason this matters in 2026.
Language increasingly interfaces not only with humans but with systems.
An examination gives instructions through language.
A mathematics question encodes a problem through language.
A science procedure uses language to specify operations.
A government form uses language.
Software interfaces use language.
Search engines interpret language.
AI systems increasingly receive human intentions through language.
So English can sometimes function as something resembling a directives layer:
language → interpretation → operation
This does not mean English is literally computer code.
It means linguistic precision increasingly affects whether a receiver—human or machine—reconstructs the intended operation correctly.
This makes English capability increasingly transferable beyond the English classroom.
The English Mind and Internal Monologue
There is an intriguing connection here, but we need to keep the boundary precise.
Not everyone reports a continuous internal monologue.
People vary in the frequency, form and vividness of inner speech.
Thought is therefore not reducible to an internal verbal narrator.
Our stronger working proposition is narrower.
English education repeatedly trains questions such as:
What happened?
Why?
What evidence tells you that?
What might happen next?
What is another explanation?
What is the writer trying to achieve?
Is the argument justified?
These begin as questions teachers ask students about texts.
Some may eventually become reusable structures for deliberation.
A person can potentially ask:
Why am I doing this?
What happens if I continue?
What evidence do I have?
Am I making an assumption?
What happens to the other person?
What alternatives exist?
In this sense, English education may contribute representational and linguistic structures usable in later self-guidance.
That remains a research hypothesis.
It should not be turned into the universal claim:
English creates thought.
The useful claim is:
Language can provide some of the reusable structures through which thinking, reflection and communication are organised.
This Changes What We Mean by English Tuition
If this model is even approximately right, English tuition cannot merely be:
more vocabulary lists;
more worksheets;
more compositions;
more comprehension papers;
more correction.
Those tools remain useful.
But they are components.
The educational problem is capability construction.
