Getting Help in Singapore | Lost Items on MRT and Buses, Operator Hotlines and Retrieval

Redhill MRT EW18 distinctive pink platform with a train and passengers, July 2024.

If you lost a phone, wallet, bag, travel card or another belonging on the MRT or a public bus in Singapore, contact the transport operator responsible for that service as soon as possible. If you are still at a train station, speak to the Passenger Service Centre staff and explain the train line, direction, approximate time and missing item. If you were on a bus, note the bus service number, direction and boarding or alighting stop. Do not chase a departing bus or enter a restricted train area.

Lost-and-found and operator contacts:

  • SBS Transit: dedicated Lost & Found assistance 6383 7211, available during bus/train operating hours. Official lost-property service and online lost article report.
  • SMRT: general customer service 1800-336-8900 and customer_relations@smrt.com.sg, as listed in SimplyGo’s verified operator directory.
  • Tower Transit: 1800-248-0950, daily 7.30am–1am; use the online Lost Article Form.
  • Go-Ahead Singapore: 6812 6469, daily 7.30am–10pm, including public holidays; see its official contact page.
  • SimplyGo / lost EZ-Link or concession card: 6883 5048, generally 8am–6pm daily, closed on public holidays. Block eligible registered cards through the SimplyGo app as appropriate.
  • Lost bank card, phone or passport: contact the issuing bank, phone provider or relevant authority separately; a bus company’s lost-and-found report does not protect your financial accounts.

Quick action order: secure any bank or phone accounts at risk, identify the transport service, submit one accurate lost-article report to the correct operator, keep your reference number and follow the operator’s collection instructions if the item is found.

What to Do Immediately After Losing Something on Public Transport

The moment you discover a missing item, try to narrow down where it was last certainly with you. Was it in your pocket before entering the MRT? Did you put it on the seat beside you? Did the bag remain on a bus after you alighted?

The more precise the account, the easier it is for the operator to route the enquiry. A vague report such as “I lost something somewhere near Orchard” is difficult to match; a report identifying bus 143 toward Jurong East, approximately 4.20pm, alighted at a named stop, small dark blue zip pouch is more useful.

Do not put yourself in danger to recover an item. A train leaving the platform, a road crossing in traffic or an unstaffed depot is not an opportunity to chase the missing belongings.

This guide focuses on whom to contact and how to retrieve lost items through the correct operator. For a problem-solving walkthrough of individual cases, see How to Solve Problems in Singapore | Lost Items on MRT or Bus, SMRT and SBS Transit Lost & Found.

Step 1: Identify the Operator, Not Just the Bus Colour

Singapore’s public transport system includes several operators. Contacting the wrong company may lead to delays even if its customer service staff try to redirect you.

For rail, first identify the MRT or LRT line and station. Station staff can usually tell you who operates that line. For buses, the service number, origin and direction help determine the operator.

The SimplyGo contact directory lists current contacts for SBS Transit, SMRT, Tower Transit and Go-Ahead Singapore. If you are unsure who ran the route, use the directory rather than guessing from a logo remembered briefly.

Why the route and direction matter

The same service number may travel in both directions. A bus can also operate through several interchanges and be taken out of service at a particular depot.

A report saying service 12 toward Pasir Ris after boarding near a specified stop gives staff more useful information than a report saying simply “bus 12”.

If you know the vehicle number from a photo or receipt, include it, but do not invent a number because you think a report will be rejected without one.

SBS Transit Lost & Found: How to Report an Item

The SBS Transit Lost & Found page publishes the dedicated assistance number 6383 7211, available throughout bus and train operating hours.

SBS Transit also provides an online lost-article reporting form. The form asks for the relevant bus or rail service, date, time, location, description and owner contact details.

For a bus report, you may be asked for:

  • Date and approximate time lost.
  • Bus service number.
  • Direction of travel.
  • Stop or interchange.
  • Vehicle registration number, where known.
  • Description and distinguishing features of the item.

For rail, describe the line, station, carriage position if remembered, direction and approximate boarding or alighting time.

Do not submit false details to make a form look complete. If you cannot identify the exact carriage, describe what you know.

Can I collect an item without being contacted?

Do not assume you should turn up at a depot or office unannounced. The SBS Transit page may announce how found items are listed and when notified owners should collect them.

Follow the latest operator instructions and bring proof of ownership where requested. Publicly listed collection deadlines and categories may change from month to month.

SMRT Lost and Found: Hotline and Email

SMRT operates relevant MRT and bus services. The SimplyGo official operator directory lists:

  • SMRT Customer Service: 1800-336-8900.
  • Email: customer_relations@smrt.com.sg.

If you are at an SMRT-operated station, approach the Passenger Service Centre promptly. For items left on an SMRT bus, provide the service number, direction, stop and time.

A clear initial message should include the item description, time window and a safe contact number. Ask whether a formal online form or reference number is available.

What if you transferred between two MRT lines?

Identify the last point where the item was definitely with you, then consider which line or station you used afterward. The item may have been left on the train, at a station or at a transfer area.

Explain the route and uncertainty to station staff. Do not send contradictory claims that an item was definitely lost on multiple trains; label those as possibilities.

Tower Transit: Lost Article eForm and Hotline

The Tower Transit Lost and Found page has an online Lost Article Form for items left on its buses.

Its published telephone number is 1800-248-0950, with a hotline period of 7.30am–1am daily.

The Tower Transit FAQ explains that staff may contact the owner for verification when a matching item is located.

When submitting, include:

  1. The bus service and direction.
  2. Journey date and approximate time.
  3. Boarding and alighting stops.
  4. Distinguishing features of the lost item.
  5. The best phone or email for follow-up.
  6. Any proof of ownership you can provide safely if requested.

The form is an enquiry, not a guarantee that the item is already found or that an immediate collection appointment is available.

Go-Ahead Singapore: Customer Service Contact

Go-Ahead Singapore publishes 6812 6469, with customer-service hours 7.30am to 10pm every day, including public holidays.

If an item was left on a Go-Ahead bus, contact the service team with the bus route, direction, estimated location and detailed description.

If you cannot call, use the operator’s official contact or feedback route rather than sending personal information to an unfamiliar social-media account claiming to be transport staff.

When the item is identified, ask where and when it can be collected and what proof is required.

Lost a Wallet on a Bus or MRT

A lost wallet needs two parallel responses: find the physical wallet and protect valuable cards or identity information.

Contact the transport operator with the route and time, but do not postpone blocking or securing a missing bank card while waiting for the lost-property report.

For the bank card, use the issuer’s verified app, website or emergency contact number to check appropriate controls. For a stored-value transport card, use SimplyGo’s legitimate loss process.

If the wallet held a Singapore NRIC and it is genuinely lost, consult ICA’s identity-card loss guidance. The appropriate steps depend on whether the card is missing, found later or suspected to have been stolen.

Should I publish a wallet photograph online?

Avoid posting documents, full card numbers, signatures, NRIC details or another person’s identification publicly. A lost-property report can convey distinctive features privately to the correct organisation.

If you find someone else’s wallet, do not photograph and circulate its full contents in an open chat. Hand it to station staff, the operator or the appropriate Police lost-property channel.

Lost a Phone on the MRT

A missing phone creates urgency because it may contain banking apps, messages, email, personal photographs and authentication services.

Contact the correct operator to report its physical loss. In parallel, use the phone manufacturer’s legitimate lost-device protection options and contact the mobile provider if the SIM may be misused.

If your banking app or Singpass access may be compromised, follow the institutions’ official protection instructions. A transport operator cannot secure those accounts for you.

You may also read Getting Help in Singapore | Singpass Hacked, Suspicious Logins and Identity Theft for that separate security problem.

Can transport staff track a phone?

The operator may check items handed in and follow its own internal procedures, but it does not guarantee real-time tracking or access to personal location data.

If you can see a location through your legitimate device-finding service, do not approach an unknown private address or confront a person. Seek professional or Police guidance if you suspect theft.

Lost an EZ-Link or SimplyGo Travel Card

The SimplyGo official contact page lists the customer service number 6883 5048, with operating hours 8am–6pm daily, closed on public holidays.

If your travel card has been linked to the SimplyGo app and the product supports card blocking, you may be able to block the lost card in the app.

The SimplyGo card-blocking FAQ explains that successful blocking of a registered SimplyGo EZ-Link card is immediate through the app and remaining stored value may be refundable under its rules.

The precise blocking period and refund treatment can differ for older non-SimplyGo EZ-Link cards, concession cards and other products. Do not assume every card has an identical process.

What if you are a student or senior with a concession card?

Use the appropriate SimplyGo lost concession card replacement guide. It has different replacement categories for student, senior, Workfare, disability and other concession cards.

The user may need to block the old card, prove identity, pay a replacement fee and transfer a qualifying concession entitlement according to the product’s rules.

Ask what will happen to any monthly concession pass and stored value rather than simply buying a generic replacement card.

Refunds After Blocking a Travel Card

The SimplyGo EZ-Link FAQ distinguishes older card technology from the newer SimplyGo card arrangements.

The newer SimplyGo EZ-Link framework generally permits an eligible registered card to be blocked through the app and may refund a qualifying balance within six working days. Some older EZ-Link products can take up to 48 hours to block, with different refund timelines and conditions.

Once a particular loss report and block are final, the old card may be unusable even if it is found later. Check the product-specific terms before assuming a found card can simply be reactivated.

The important point is to act promptly and follow the rules for your card type, not assume every transport card is identical.

What If the Lost Item Includes a Passport or Identity Card?

Transport operators may recover a passport or IC and ask for proof before releasing it. However, the owner should also follow the government reporting rules for a genuinely lost identity document.

For a Singapore IC, ICA’s lost card guidance explains reporting, replacement and what to do if the card is subsequently recovered.

For a Singapore passport, use ICA’s lost or damaged passport guidance. A passport reported lost cannot be used for travel even if later found.

Do not treat a successful lost-and-found pickup as automatically reversing a statutory lost-passport report.

What If the Item Was Stolen, Not Simply Forgotten?

A misplaced bag and a suspected theft are different situations. Do not accuse another commuter because an item is missing.

If there is credible evidence of theft, a confrontation, suspicious withdrawals or other potential criminal activity, preserve evidence and ask the appropriate Police or operator contact about reporting.

For an emergency involving violence, call 999. For ordinary lost-property reporting, use the Singapore Police Force’s contact and e-services page, which lists lost-property reporting and Found and Unclaimed Property Office arrangements.

If financial fraud has occurred, contact your bank immediately, then follow formal reporting procedures.

What to Say in a Lost-Property Report

Use a concise description:

“I lost a [item and brand] on [MRT line or bus service] on [date] at about [time]. I travelled from [boarding station/stop] to [alighting station/stop], in the direction of [destination]. The item is [colour, size, case and distinguishing features]. Could you check whether it has been found, give me a case reference and explain how I can identify or collect it?”

This provides the essential evidence without lengthy speculation.

For valuable electronics, you may be asked for a serial number or other proof of ownership. Share that securely only when necessary, and be wary of a stranger claiming they found the item but demanding your login credentials.

What Happens If an Operator Finds My Item?

A found item may be handed in by another commuter, retrieved by staff or processed through an operator’s internal lost-and-found centre.

The operator normally needs to establish ownership before release. It may ask for a description, documents or other evidence. Collection times and locations depend on the operator.

Do not assume staff will send your phone or wallet by courier at no charge, or that the item will be held indefinitely. Ask the official service for the collection process and any deadline.

If you cannot attend personally, ask whether an authorised representative can collect it and which documents are required.

How Long Should I Continue Following Up?

A missing item may not be handed in immediately. However, there is no reliable universal time after which all operators are guaranteed to locate it.

Keep the reference number, submit the necessary report and follow the operator’s instructions on when or how to enquire again. Check that your contact details remain correct.

If the item contains bank cards or accounts, security protection should not wait for an operator’s search result.

Should I keep filing the same form?

Usually, one accurate report with a reliable contact number is more useful than several inconsistent duplicate submissions. Update the case if you remember a material detail or the operator requests clarification.

What If You Find Someone Else’s Property?

Hand the item to Passenger Service Centre staff, the bus captain where appropriate, or another authorised operator employee as soon as it is safe.

For an item found away from public transport, use the Singapore Police Force’s Found and Unclaimed Property information to determine the appropriate reporting route.

Do not keep, use, sell or attempt to access someone else’s phone, card or personal information. Do not publish photographs of ID documents or private messages online.

A person who found an item is not entitled to demand a “recovery fee” simply because the owner is distressed.

A Practical First-Day Checklist

Immediately: secure exposed bank cards, identity access and phone accounts as appropriate. Then identify the journey and contact the correct transport operator.

Within the first few hours: complete the official lost-article form if available, including accurate date, route, direction and description.

Later that day: preserve the case reference and any proof of ownership. If the item held identity documents or travel cards, follow the relevant institution’s separate loss procedure.

Following days: respond to the operator’s notification, verify any proposed collection address and check deadlines. Do not follow an unverified courier message demanding payment.

This is a household planning aid, not a guaranteed recovery or storage timetable.
